KLBC Activities Report for June 2014

5 June 2014
Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for June was held on 5 June 2014. The session, attended by 62 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session was no leave during pupillage. The pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

6 June 2014 
CPC Mentoring Programme Get-together
The KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee (“CPC”) organised a CPC Mentoring Programme get-together on 6 June 2014 at 6:00 pm at the KL Bar Secretariat. Five mentors and five mentees attended the get-together which was not very encouraging but still a good start. The CPC proposes to organise another get-together soon.

KL Bar Monthly Social Get-together 
About 50 lawyers gathered at Tipsy Restaurant, Petaling Jaya on 6 June 2014 for the June edition of the Social Get-together. This edition, jointly held by the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and Selangor Bar Committee and organised by the KL Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee, was aimed at providing an opportunity for members of both Bars to meet and foster camaraderie.



14 to 15 June 2014 
YLC WORKSHOP: Mooting Skills (for Law Students from INTI International University)
The KL Bar Young Lawyers (“YLC”) Committee organised a Mooting Skills Workshop for the law students from INTI International University on 14 and 15 June 2014 at the KL Bar Auditorium. The Workshop was attended by 35 students. Click here to view the photos.

It’s Time to Take a Hike - Bukit Puchong
A total of 17 people participated in this hiking trip organised by the KL Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee on 15 June 2014. The group met at the foot of the hill at around 8:50 am and the hike commenced at 9:00 am. The hike, led by Alex Netto with Joshua Teoh Beni being the sweeper, took about an hour and a half to complete. The entire group was out by 10:40 am.

FREE PDC- AWL Seminar on Silent Suffering - The Need for Victim Advocacy and Support
The Professional Development Committee jointly organised a Free Seminar with the Association of Women Lawyers on 20 June 2014. The seminar was presented by Melissa Mohd Akhir which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm and was attended by 70 participants. The seminar covered the following areas: "The culture of disbelief and recognising the rights of vulnerable victims", "The role of victim advocates in upholding the 'cause of justice': applying S. 42 of the Legal Profession Act 1976", "Legal tools available to protect vulnerable victims", "Ways forward for  lawyer-activists: improving victim advocacy in Malaysia" and "Covering the relevant sections in the Criminal Procedure Code, Child Act 2001, Evidence Act 1950, Evidence of Child Witnesses Act 2007, Domestic Violence Act 1994, Legal Profession Act, Convention of the Rights of the Child, Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Subordinate Courts Act 1948 and the Witness Protection Act 2009".




21 to 22 June 2014
YLC Sanctuary
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee held its Annual Retreat renamed “Sanctuary” on 21 to 22 June 2014 at El Sanctuary, Melaka. 18 participants attended the Sanctuary. Click here to view the photos.

Pupils Workshop: Criminal Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a Criminal Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 25 June 2014 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Client Interview"; "Mitigation"; "Bail Application"; and "Trial Process". 26 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by Cheow Wee and Lim Chi Chau.

Movie Night - Transformers : Age of Extinction
The KL Bar Social, Arts and Culture Committee organised a private screening of Transformers: Age of Extinction (2D) on 26 June 2014 at GSC Pavilion. This event was open to all members and pupils as well as their families and friends.

28 June 2014
2nd KL Bar Futsal Competition 2014 
Organised by the KL Bar Sports & Recreation Committee, the 2nd KL Bar Futsal Competition open to members of the Bar and pupils only, was successfully held on 28 June 2014 at Samba De Futsal Court, Petaling Jaya. The maximum number of teams, 16 men and four ladies, participated in the competition. In fact, a 17th entry for the men’s catergory had to be turned away. Zoo Negara Volunteer Programme
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee organised a Visit to Zoo Negara on 28 June 2014 to volunteer for a day. 20 participants assisted the animal keepers in providing daily care for the animals, including exhibit cleaning, food preparation and animal behaviour enrichment activities. The objective of this project was to provide a close relationship between human and wildlife by learning to understand their needs and social behaviour.

Pupils Workshop: Conveyancing
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a Conveyancing Workshop specifically for pupils on 30 June 2014 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Overview of the Conveyancing Process"; "Essential Clauses found in a Sale & Purchase Agreement"; "How to fill up the relevant NLC Forms"; and "Practical Pointers for the Conveyancing Lawyer". 29 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by Michael Leow Yon Meng.
