KOPI O NIGHT – Fatwa, Law & Liberalism: Where Do We Draw the Line?
The Bar Council Legal Aid
Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) organised a “Kopi O Night” at the LAC
KL Training Room. It was held on 1 August 2025, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and was
attended by 35 participants. The discussion was on “Fatwa, Law & Liberalism: Where Do We Draw the Line?” The
distinguished speaker was Rozana
Isa, Executive
Director of Sisters in Islam (SIS), and the event was moderated by Nur Izni
Syazwani Binti Ahmad. The informal setting encouraged open dialogue and active
participation. Participants provided positive feedback, highlighting the
engaging and thought-provoking exchange of ideas.
Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) – Pupils in Chambers Orientation Batch 123/2025
The orientation for pupils of Batch 123/2025 was held on 4, 6, and 8 August 2025 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. The sessions were facilitated by Morhaneraj a/l Rajakumaran and Joachim Xavier. A total of 256 pupils in chambers attended the orientation.
Legal Aspects Of Hire Purchase
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Dato’ Abd Shukor and moderated by Aina Zulaikha Ahmad Zaki.
The webinar covered the following areas:
(i) “Meaning Of Hire Purchase And The Applicable Law”;
(ii) “Conventional Vs Islamic Hire Purchase”;
(iii) “Formal Requirements”;
(iv) “Terms And Conditions”;
(v) “Recovery Of Possessions”;
(vi) “Claims By Third Parties”; and

It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 42 participants.

Overall, the Kuala Lumpur Bar showcased remarkable talent and versatility, leading to our impressive overall victory in the competition.
The closing dinner was held at HGH Convention Centre on 9 August 2025.
The event, attended by representatives from all states, took place from 7:30pm
to 11:00 pm. The evening was filled with camaraderie and celebration of
achievements across all participating states. A memorable night reinforcing
teamwork and sportsmanship across the nation.
Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
Jointly organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session in May was held on 11 August 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Michelle Siah Yi Yen, the session was attended by 84 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the elections to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It also included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Aarthi Jeyarajah.

Chengal Centre for Mental Health “It’s Okay To Ask For Help”
The Chengal Centre, in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee Gender Equality and Diversity Committee (“GEDC”), successfully hosted its “It’s OK to Ask for Help” session on 14 August 2025, from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. Initially planned as a hybrid programme, the session was converted into a fully online format . A total of 15 participants joined virtually.
The session was moderated by GEDC Co-Chairperson, Aarthi Jeyarajah, and featured insightful sharing by Dr. Johari and Barry Ooi, Founder of the Chengal Centre.
This
interactive programme created a safe space to discuss mental health, focusing
on recognising anxiety in both workplace and daily life contexts. Participants
were introduced to practical approaches in identifying symptoms of anxiety and
depression, while also exploring healthy ways to respond to and manage these
challenges. The discussions encouraged openness, reflection, and dialogue, with
participants gaining greater awareness and confidence to reach out for support.
The session reinforced a powerful message that it is always OK to ask for
help.
Pupils Call Briefing
The Pupils Admission to the Bar Briefing was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on 15 August 2025, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. The session, led by Tay Kit Hoo, was attended by 46 pupils.
ATC Legal Careers Fair 2025
Organised by ATC Law School, the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) participated in the ATC Legal Careers Fair 2025 by setting up a booth to promote the services provided by LAC to the public. The event was held at ATC (Kuala Lumpur) on 16 August 2025, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. LAC representatives were Jeevanathan Angappan and Shenise Charles Daya, and they were assisted by pupils in chambers David Tea Shang Quan, Kristen Jeanne Danker, and Amanda Lim Hwei Ling.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, the seminar featured Richard Wee as the speaker. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, we welcomed 10 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

Brendan Siva, Lai Wai Fong and Tan Shang Neng as the speakers. Held at the
Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, we welcomed 88 participants
for an engaging and insightful discussion.
