Introduction To Will Writing, Grant Of Probate And Letters Of Administration
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this webinar was conducted by Marian Lee.

The webinar covered the following areas: -
(i) “Overview of a will and the law of succession in Malaysia”;
(ii) “Application to court for grant of probate”;
(iii) “Application to court for grant of letters of administration, dispensation of sureties and vesting order”;
(iv) “Application to land office pursuant to Small Estates (Distribution) Act 1955 & Small Estates (Distribution) (Amendment) Act 2022”;
(v) “Related matters: transmission of immovable properties, real property gains tax and stamp duties”; and
(vi) “Q&A session”.

It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 179 participants.

Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) Training for Lawyers (Part 1& 2)

Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) ("LAC KL"), Parts 1 & 2 of the YBGK training, were held at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia on 3 July 2024. The training focused on the administration of the YBGK, and the procedures for Arrest, Remand, Bail and Mitigation. It was conducted by the LAC KL Chairperson, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, and Jacky Loi Yap Loong from 9:00am to 6:00pm. 42 lawyers attended the training.

Introduction To Commercial Drafting

Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Kenneth Wong Poh Lim and moderated by Nur Fathin Farina Binti Mokhtar.

The webinar covered the following areas: -

(i) " Basic dos and don’ts in drafting agreements"; and
(ii) “Practical tips / suggestions in drafting agreements for beginners”.

It was held from 2:30pm to 4:30pm via Zoom. We had 150 participants.

LACKL x ATC Law Student Briefing Session

The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) hosted a briefing session for ATC students regarding their internship program. The briefing was aimed to provide the students with essential information and guidance for their upcoming internship.The session took place at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia at 10:00am. A total of 32 students attended the briefing. The session was conducted by Morhaneraj Rajakumaran

Pupils Call Briefing

Organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee, the briefings for the Pupils Admission to the Bar for July 2024 was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on: -

(i) 9 July 2024, from 11:00am to 12:00pm. The briefing was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo and was attended by 68 pupils; and

(ii) 15 July 2024, from 9:30am to 10:40am. The briefing was conducted by Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 19 pupils.

(iii) 26 July 2024, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. The briefing was conducted by Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 38 pupils.

Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students – SMK Wangsa Maju, KL

Organised by The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the legal awareness campaign is designed for school students with the aim to educate them about Malaysian laws and how these laws may impact them in the event of any wrongdoing. The outreach session took place at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Wangsa Maju from 8:30am to 10:00am. There were various crucial topics covered during this session including bullying, driving or riding without a license, sexual harassment, and smoking at school. The speaker for this session was Mohd Radzlan Bin Jalaludin with assistance from volunteer pupils in chambers Loh Jia Jin, Radha Mohanraj, Venkat Ram V.K Dasaratharaj and Nuradriana Omar.

Amendments To The Evidence Of Child Witness Act 2007: Effects On Child’s Testimony

Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this Seminar was conducted by Salim Bashir. It was held at Kuala Lumpur Bar Conference Room from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 10 participants.

Pupils Introduction And Diversity & Inclusion Session

Jointly organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session in July was held on 15 July 2024 at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. Led by Ooi Jia Liang, the session was attended by 191 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the elections to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo.

Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students – SMK Taman Maluri, KL

Organised by The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the legal awareness campaign took place at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Taman Maluri from 8:30am to 10:00am. There were various crucial topics covered during this session including bullying, driving or riding without a license, sexual harassment, and smoking at school. The speaker for this session was Ravinder Singh Dhalliwal with assistance from volunteer pupils in chambers Eunice Soo Jing Sin, Akmal Khuzairi Bin Masri and Letchumanan A/L Anbalagan.

Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this Seminar was conducted by Suren Rajah.

The seminar covered the following areas: -

(i) " Brief overview of the Competition Act 2010";
(ii) “Proposed amendments including the merger control”; and
(iii) “Recent case laws”.

It was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 22 participants.

25 Students from Skrine visited the Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) on 18 July 2024. The visit took place from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. Terrence Lee Rohui briefed the students about LAC KL.

It was held at Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 67 participants.

The Bar Chronicles Series #1 “Big Law Firms vs Small Law Firms: Navigating Unique Challenges”

Organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the event was held on 19 July 2024 at Red Rooster, Plaza Damansara from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. This event was presented by Alvin Tang, Kee Hui Yee & Hooi Chung Wai and moderated by Marveyn Lingam We had 78 participants.

Pool Competition

The 8th Kuala Lumpur Bar Pool Team Tournament saw a record turnout of 12 teams which comprise of 41 participants, 8 of whom were ladies.

This year’s tournament also introduced several new formats which include playing both 8-ball and 9-ball pool, as well as the scotch triples format i.e., 3 members of a team shall be required to play concurrently within the same frame.

Overall, the tournament was very friendly and played in good spirits. The results were as follows:

It was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 4:30pm. We had 301 participants.

Blood Donation

Organised by the Social Committee, the annual blood donation campaign was held on 24 July 2024 at Lobby Level 1, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex with the assistance of the National Blood Bank. Members of the Bar as well as Court staff and members of the public came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive. 66 donors registered, 50 donated and 16 were rejected.

UNHCR x Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre Legal Awareness Video Project

The Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre (“LAC KL”) successfully completed the UNHCR x Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Centre Legal Awareness Video project. To celebrate the completion and to appreciate the contributors, a soft-launch/appreciation event was held on 26 July 2024 at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. The event took place from 3:00pm to 4:00pm.

The training focused on Criminal Trial Advocacy. It was conducted on 27 & 28 July 2024 by Collin Andrew from 9:00am to 5:00pm. 14 lawyers attended the training.
