KLBC Activities Report For September 2020

1 and 28 September 2020
Briefing On Admission To The Bar

Two briefings on Admission to the Bar were held for pupils who were to be admitted to the Bar in the month of September and October 2020. The briefings, conducted by Puan Hendon Mohamed, were held online via Zoom. The session on 1 September was attended by 150 pupils and the session on 28 September, 139 pupils.

Pupils Introduction Session

The Pupils Introduction Session in September was held online via Zoom. Led by Rajsurian Pillai, the session was attended by 63 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period.

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion” which aim was to educate and create awareness among the pupils on, inter alia, issues related to gender sensitisation, sexual harassment and unconscious bias. The session was conducted by Nisha Ayub of SEED Malaysia and Norliza Khan.

Wills, Probate, LA And SEDA

Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was held on 8 & 9 September 2020 via Zoom Webinar. The session on 8 September 2020 was presented by Selva Balan Sinnan and moderated by Kee Hui Yee and the sessions on 9 September 2020 were presented by R.Yogeswari and Nahzatul Ain and moderated by Sathish Ramachandran. We had 68 participants.

Q&A Session On Admiralty Law & Practice

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this interactive webinar was conducted by Jeremy Joseph. It was held via Zoom Meeting from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. We had 16 participants.

Meeting With The Director Of The Kuala Lumpur Courts

The meeting was held on Thursday, 10 September 2020 at 3:00 pm at Bilik Anggerik, Level 6, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. KLBC was represented by the Co-Chairperson of the Civil Practice and Court Liaison Committee Nizam Bashir, Co-Chairperson of the Criminal Law Practice Committee Collin Arvind Andrew and Honorary Secretary of the KLBC Vivekananda Sukumaran.

Among the matters discussed were concerning administrative issues, status of the land where the two car-parks are located, etiquette of the lawyers, touting and complaints against judges.

Organised by the Civil Practice and Court Liaison Committee, this training was presented by Representatives from the Courts, Puan Norhanum binti Hassan and Siti Faraziana binti Zainuddin and moderated by the Chairman of KLBC, Harleen Kaur (Leena). It was held via Zoom Webinar from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. We had 227 participants.

The seminar covered, amongst others, "Managing Accounts of Legal Firm"; "What it takes to manage these accounts?"; "Managing Partnership Accounts”; “Principle of Accrual"; "Managing Office Accounts"; and "Managing Clients’ Accounts".
