Seminar on Drafting Commercial Contracts
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Jeremiah R. Gurusamy at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 114 participants and covered, amongst others, "Dealing with Compliance & Regulatory issues"; "Scoping the Transaction"; "Drafting Techniques"; "Understanding Key Provisions"; "Boiler Plate Clauses"; and "Common Mistakes & Pitfalls”.

Pupils Introduction Session

A monthly tradition, the October’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 4 October 2017. The session, attended by 72 pupils, was led by Alvin Oh. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The executive committee members of the KLBC were present to provide input and possible solutions to those issues and problems raised by the pupils. For the Diversity Awareness Session, the invited guest speaker, Ms Anne Abraham of LeadWomen, spoke on “Unconscious Bias”. As in previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

Tripartite Bar Games

The Tripartite Bar Games between the Malaysian Bar, Advocates’ Association of Sarawak and Sabah Law Society this year was hosted by the Malaysian Bar and held in Kuala Lumpur on 6 and 7 October 2017.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar was given the privilege of hosting the Games in conjunction with our 25th Anniversary Celebrations this year and selected University Malaya as the venue for most of the sports played.

This year’s Games involved the following competitive sports — golf, ladies’ futsal, cross country, badminton, basketball, football and bowling. The three Bars also took part in three non-competitive sports — pool, darts and boat race.

The Malaysian Bar was declared the overall champion and retained the Tripartite Bar Games Overall Champion Trophy winning at all the competitive sports except football which it drew with the Sabah Law Society.

Seminar on Role of Lawyers as Effective Gatekeepers in Preserving the Integrity of the Financial System: Prevention of Money Laundering & Terrorism Financing

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Afiz Fazriz Aziz and Tee Suat Hong from Bank Negara Malaysia at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 33 participants and covered, amongst others, "AML/CFT Requirements: International Standards and Malaysia’s AML/CFT Regime"; "ML/TF Vulnerabilities of Lawyers"; "Recent AML/CFT Development"; "AML/CFT Requirements on Lawyers;" and "Sharing on AML/CFT On-site Examination Observations".

Seminar on An Introduction to Construction Law

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Choon Hon Leng at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 68 participants and covered, amongst others, "The Players"; "The Structure"; "The Jargons and the Law"; "Preparing a Construction Contract"; "Resolving Construction Disputes"; and "The Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012".

Seminar on An Introduction to Intellectual Property

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Cindy Goh Joo Seong at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 55 participants and covered, amongst others, "Basic Principles of Trade Mark, Copyright, Patent and Industrial Design Law"; "International Treaties"; "Registration of Trade Mark, Copyright, Patent and Industrial Design"; "Infringement Proceedings"; "Common Remedies Available"; "Common Defences"; and "Rectification or Invalidation Proceedings".

Tales from the Bar: A Civil Practice and Court Liaison Social

Organised by the Civil Practice and Court Liaison Committee, the event was held on 20 October 2017 at the Bee, Publika. The event was a success with a turnout of about 250 participants. The guest speakers for the night, sharing their tales from the Bar, were PS Ranjan, Anand Ponnudurai, Atan Mustaffa, Fahri Azzat, Syahredzan Johan, HR Dipendra, Sangeet Kaur, Robyn Choi, Goh Siu Lin, Richard Wee, Dato’ David Gurupatham and Nik Elin. Games were also organised involving Aaron Mathews, Azmi Sharom, Choo Dee Wei, Shashi Devan, Alex Netto and Vivek. We also had 2 stand-up comedians from the Bar, Kelvesh and Sulaiman, performing during the intervals.

Workshop on Banking Documentations for Housing Loans (Including Banking Litigation)

Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee, the workshop was a success with 71 participants. The workshop also received excellent reviews from the participants. Topics and speakers were as follows:
  • SPA and Conventional Loans by Ong June Siang
  • Islamic and Government Loans by Nahzatul Ain
  • Risk Management by Chong Wai Kuan
  • Banking Litigation by R Yogeswari

Seminar on Current Immigration Issues and the Law

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by CR Selva at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 21 participants and covered, amongst others, "Passport - Citizen’s right or Privilege?"; "Re-hiring - The Dilemma"; "E-card, is it a pass?"; "Spouse Visa-Challenges"; "Labour Supply - Legal vs Illegal"; and "Student Pass-EMGS".

26th Sports Carnival - KL Bar vs RSC

The 26th Annual “Sports Carnival” between the Kuala Lumpur Bar (“KL Bar”) and Royal Selangor Club (“RSC”) for the YA Tan Sri Dato’ Harun Hashim Challenge Trophy was hosted by RSC. All games were played on 28 October 2017 except darts which was played on 25 October 2017. RSC beat KL Bar 4-3 winning at darts, cricket, soccer and hockey to become the Overall Champion. KL Bar won badminton, pool/snooker and “boat race”. The End-of-Games and Prize-Giving Dinner was well attended.

KL Bar Inclusive Community Outreach Programme

The first KL Bar Inclusive Community Outreach Programme, organised by the Recreation, Social & Culture Committee and supported by the KLBar Legal Aid Centre, Suriana Welfare Society, Wibawa Women, Majlis Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Malaysia and Drop & Wash, was held on 29 October 2017 at Taman Tasik Dato Keramat, Kuala Lumpur.

The event was a success with a turnout of about 200 members of the public. Free Legal Aid was provided at the event aimed at helping underprivileged youths in the area. Apart from the Free Legal Aid Clinic, there were also other activities held such as English Workshop, Counselling & Guidance, Child Abuse (Sexual abuse / bullying) Awareness, Connecting unemployed youths with training and employment opportunities with SMEs (An adoption registration for “Program Mentor-Mentee Bersama SME”), Self-Defence Workshop and Fun Archery.
