KLBC Activities Report for June 2017

Seminar for Lawyers on Managing Office & Clients’ Accounts
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 49 participants. The seminar covered, amongst others, "Accounting of Legal Firm"; “Effective Supervision of Accounting Staff and Staff dealing with monies"; "System of Internal Control, as Check and Balance"; "Pitfalls to Avoid"; "Revenue and Expenses and its Taxability”; and “Expenses & its “Allow-Ability”.

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the June’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 7 June 2017. The session, attended by 83 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan and Alvin Oh. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other executive committee members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. As in previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

Potluck Buka Puasa with the Homeless at SEED
Jointly organised by the Recreation, Social & Culture Committee and Pertubuhan Pembangunan Kebajikan dan Persekitaran Positif Malaysia (SEED), this potluck breaking of fast event with the homeless, people living and affected with HIV and transgender was held on 13 Jun 2017 at SEED office in Jalan Tiong Nam, Kuala Lumpur.

Seminar on Tort of Malicious Proceedings in Civil Proceedings
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Kalai Sivanadian at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 15 participants.

Seminar on Preparation for a Murder Trial
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar, with the purpose of providing a good understanding of the steps taken to prepare for a murder trial, was presented by T.Vijayandran at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 28 participants.

(Repeat) Seminar on Updates to the Companies Act
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Wong Tat Chung at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 111 participants. The seminar covered the Companies Act 2016: The after effects and the relevant subsidiary legislation.

Seminar on Adopted but Stateless – Our Invisible Children
Organised by the Professional Development Committee in collaboration with the Association of Women Lawyers, this seminar was presented by Goh Siu Lin and Raymond Mah at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 55 participants. The seminar covered, amongst others, "The Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989"; "Adoption (Amendment) Act 2000"; "Section 25A of the Adoption Act 1952"; "Citizenship by Operation of Law?"; "Article 14 & Schedule II of the Federal Constitution"; and "Article 15A of the Federal Constitution".

Buka Puasa with Rohingya and Myanmar Muslim Refugees at Humanitarian Aid Selangor (formerly known as MyWelfare Centre)
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee (“YLC”), this Buka Puasa event with 500 Rohingya and Myanmar Muslim refugees was held on 18 June 2017 at Humanitarian Aid Selangor (formerly known as MyWelfare Centre), 14 Jalan 4, Selayang Baru, (Pasar Borong Selayang Lama) 68100 Batu Caves. YLC managed to raise RM2,710 in sponsorship for the event.

Seminar on Limited Liability Partnership 
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Wong Tat Chung at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 66 participants. The seminar covered, amongst others, "Nature of Limited Liability Partnership"; "Background to Limited Liability Partnerships Act 2012"; "Overview of the Act”; "Taxation"; "Limited Liability Partnership and Companies Act 2016"; and "Impact on the legal profession and requirements for amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976".

Organised by the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee, this seminar was presented by Animah Kosai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 14 participants.

Seminar on Memorandum of Understanding
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 1:45 pm to 4:45 pm. The seminar was attended by 39 participants. The seminar covered, amongst others, "Introduction regarding the use of MOU in the business, commercial and corporate world"; "The legal nature"; "Why MOU is not legally binding?"; "How MOU could be made legally binding?"; "Under what circumstances MOU is not legally binding or is legally binding?"; "Drafting MOU"; "With full practical illustration of drafting a non-legally binding or a legally binding MOU"; "Even if the MOU itself is not legally binding, a critical understanding of a MOU is important to ascertain whether it has the force of law to protect your client’s business interests"; and "Other formalities, notwithstanding its non-legal nature".
