KLBC Activities Report for January 2016

Pupils Introduction Session
As a monthly tradition organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for January was held on 6 January 2016. The session, attended by 95 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. Like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

KL Bar Run 2016
Organised by the KLBC Sports Committee, this second KL Bar Run, held on 10 January 2016 at the Lake Gardens, was another huge success. 67 teams comprising members of the Bar, pupils-in-chambers and law graduates participated in this event. Starting with a warm up exercise at 6:45 am, the Run was flagged off at 7:00 am by the KLBC Chairman. After a heated battle and some serious running, Team Speedy Gonzale won the Champions Trophy. The first runners-up and second runners-up were Team The Force Awakens and Team The Front Runners respectively. The Fanciest Dressed Award was won by Team The Force Awakens who came in self-made Star Wars costume; second placing was Team The Chefs and third placing, Team Learned Foot. PDC Seminar on Accounting and Finance for Lawyers 
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 12 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 27 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "Roles Of Accounting In The Legal Profession"; "Law And Accounting"; "Financial Accounting"; "Management Accounting"; "The Differences Between Turnover, Gross Profit, Net Profit, Retained Earnings, Profit & Cash And Concept Of Liquidity"; "Working Capital"; "Financial Management"; "Accounting, Auditing And Fraud"; and "Investigation And Forensic".

PDC Seminar on The Personal Data Protection Act
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 13 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 20 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "Introduction To The Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010"; "PDPA Compliance"; "Dealing With The 7 Data Principles"; "PDPA Implementation" and "Ensuring Successful Compliance With The PDPA".

15th Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Bar Games
The 15th Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Bar Games for the Lall Singh Muker Challenge Trophy was held on 16 January 2016 with the Kuala Lumpur Bar playing hosts. Kuala Lumpur Bar beat the Selangor Bar 4-3 winning at netball, volleyball, badminton and men’s futsal to become the overall champion. Selangor Bar won golf, football and ladies futsal. ITC Legal Tech Forum: Bringing Lawyers and Technology Together
Organised by the KLBC Information Technology Committee (ITC), this forum was presented by Fahri Azzat, Richard Wee Thiam Seng, Jason Kay, Mohd Izzat Ghazali (Gizzat), Gaythri Raman and Foong Cheng Leong on 19 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The forum was attended by 24 participants. The forum provided the participants with the knowledge on essential legal-tech issues and introduced tools and ways which can be used by lawyers for efficiency, improving client service, as well as just keeping up with the times. Several legal tech startups were also invited to give a short introduction of their services and how their services can assist lawyers in their practice.

Meeting with PMT and KL Courts Officers on Assigned Counsel
The KLBC Criminal Practice Committee (CPC) had a meeting with the Registrar of the High Court of Malaya on 20 January 2016. KLBC was represented by the Chairman, Ravin Singh and Honorary Secretary, Goh Siu Lin and the CPC Chairperson, Lim Chi Chau. CCPC member, Viknesvaran Kanapathypillai was also in attendance. The meeting was also attended by the officers of the Kuala Lumpur Criminal High Court. The main issue discussed was the process of assigning counsel for capital punishment cases.

YLC Seminar on Civil Procedure
Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee (YLC), this seminar was presented by Lai Chee Hoe on 20 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 31 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "How Do We Blend Messaging Applications In Pleadings" and "Summary Judgment Exercise (dealing with whatsapp messages as part of the supporting documentary evidence)".

PDC Seminar on the Fundamentals of Bankruptcy Proceedings
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Trevor Jason Mark Padasian on 27 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 79 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "Introduction”; “Bankruptcy Principles"; "Problematic Issues In Bankruptcy"; and "Relationship To winding-Up Proceedings".

PDC One-Day Seminar on Family Law – How to Handle Divorce Proceedings
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 28 January 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 86 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "Soft Skills In Handling Clients Caught In The Divorce Tussle"; "The Dynamics Of Divorce And Child Custody Issues"; "How To Advise Your Client Facing Divorce - Before, During And After"; "The Process Of Divorce And Its Varied Ancillary Issues"; and "How To Brief Clients On The FAQs".

The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar VI
Organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the 6th edition of the Luncheon was held on 30 January 2016 at the President’s Room of the Royal Selangor Club at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. The event was attended by 10 senior lawyers namely, Datuk Jagjit Singh, Muhendaran Suppiah, Mathew Thomas Philip, Ravi Nekoo, Goh Siu Lin, Amrit Pal Singh, Amer Hamzah Arshad, Salim Bashir Bhaskaran, Harleen Kaur and Foong Cheng Leong who gladly shared with the 26 pupils and young lawyers present, their experience, knowledge and wisdom that they have gained in their years of practice.
