KLBC Activities Report for June 2015

Pupils Introduction Session
As a monthly tradition organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for June was held on 4 June 2015. The session, attended by 76 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. Similar like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

KL Bar Bowling Tournament
Organised by the KLBC Sports Committee, the KL Bar Bowling Tournament was held at Sunway Megalanes, Sunway Pyramid on 6 June 2015. A total of 19 teams participated in the event and the winners were: Best Team Overall - TRG Bar A (1st placing); Icepick Willie (2nd placing); Rilek Je (3rd placing). Best Male Player - Mohammad Afiq Ammar (Rilek Je). Best Female Player - Ghasidah binti Jusoh (TRG Bar A). Best Firm Team - Rilek Je - Khairul A & Co (1st placing); Spare Rib - Chooi & Co (2nd placing); Alley Gator - Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill (3rd placing).

Social Get-Together
Organised by the KLBC Social, Arts & Recreation Committee, the first social get-together for the term 2015/16 was held on 12 June 2015 at Rils, Bangsar. Done in a casual setting, 30 members of the Bar turned up for this event.


13-14 June 2015
YLC Sanctuary
Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee, 16 young lawyers attended the Sanctuary at the Asian Waterpark Village, Puchong.

Volunteering at the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen
Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee, 25 lawyers volunteered to help serve some 450 people in the streets of Jalan TAR and Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. The programme ran from 9:00 pm to midnight. Click here to read the full report.

Pupils Workshop: Criminal Litigation
The KLBC Pupils Committee organised a Criminal Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 29 June 2015 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Client Interview"; "Mitigation"; "Bail Application"; and "Trial Process". 31 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by Lim Chi Chau and Farhan Read.

PDC-AWL Series: Seminar on An Introduction to Children’s Rights in Malaysia
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC) in collaboration with the Association of Women Lawyers (AWL), this seminar was presented by Sharmila Sekaran on 30 June 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 51 participants. The seminar covered the following topics, "Understanding Children’s Rights”; “Issues affecting Children”; and “Development and Protection of Children”.
