PDC Seminar on An Introduction to Construction Law
Choon Hon Leng from Messrs Raja, Darryl & Loh presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 7 May 2013. The seminar was attended by 73 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "The Players", "The Structure", "The Jargons and the Law", "Preparing a Construction Contract", "Resolving Construction Disputes" and "The Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012".

Pupils Workshop on Civil Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a civil litigation workshop specifically for pupils on 8 May 2013 by Colin Andrew Pereira and Sanjeev Kumar Rasiah focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a civil brief covering the following areas, "Opinion Writing Exercise", "Drafting of Pleadings Exercise", and "Presenting a Case in Court". 53 participants attended the workshop.

Annual Blood Donation Campaign
With the assistance of the National Blood Bank and the KL Courts, a Blood Donation Drive was held on 13 May 2013 at Level 2 of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at Jalan Duta. Members of the Bar, Court staff and members of the public nobly came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive. A total of 64 donors registered. Unfortunately, only 47 were eligible to donate. The 17 were rejected because they were either underweight, having high blood pressure or low blood pressure or had lived in the United Kingdom from 1980 till 1996 or in Europe between 1980 until the present.  A total of 47 units of blood were collected from the caring donors.

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for May was held on 13 May 2013. The session, attended by 64 pupils, was led by Ravin Singh. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and the members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were, no leave during pupillage, firms not having a set structure for pupils during their period of pupillage and rude staff at the RKKK registry.

PDC Workshop on An Introduction to the Law of Passing Off
Arunachalam Kasi from Messrs Arun Kasi & Co presented the workshop which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 16 May 2013. The workshop was attended by 49 participants. The workshop was aimed at delivering to the participants a basic understanding of the law of passing-off. The speaker presented this topic in a structured way with reference to the relevant case law. He briefly introduced what is passing-off, its origin, its objectives, its relationship to law of trademarks, its co-existence with the Trade Marks Act 1976, its expansion beyond the classical form. He also introduced the three legal requisites of classical passing-off claim, namely the relevant goodwill of the claimant, misrepresentation made by the respondent and resultant damage to the claimant. He then elaborated on each of the three requisites with reference to and discussion of case law.

PDC/YLC-MMLA Seminar on Crimes at Sea
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee in collaboration with the Professional Development Committee and Malaysian Maritime Law Association jointly organised the seminar by First Admiral Maritime Dato’ Zulkifili Bin Abu Bakar and Ms Sitpah Selvaratnam. The Seminar was held at the KL Bar Auditorium from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm and was attended by 61 participants. The first part of the presentation covered the Agency’s roles in tackling various maritime crimes which included piracy/sea robbery, drug trafficking, smuggling of contraband and foodstuff, trafficking of persons and human smuggling, illegal migration, transporting WMD, terrorism and environmental crimes - wildlife trafficking, marine pollution, illegal fishing and sand smuggling. Special emphasis was given on combating piracy and sea robbery. The second part of the presentation covered civil consequences of piracy and highlighted the effects of piracy on the time charter of a vessel subjected to piracy including the availability of defences of off-hire and the approach to constructive total loss in relation to cargo claims under marine insurance.

The KL Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee (SACC) organised a get-together to watch the UEFA Champions League Final: Borussia Dortmound vs Bayern Munich, on Saturday 25 May 2013 from 11:30 pm onwards at Cocoon @ The Scott Garden.

PDC Seminar on The Personal Data Protection Act 
Foong Cheng Leong from Messrs Foong Cheng Leong & Co presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 28 May 2013. The seminar was attended by 95 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "Introduction to Personal Data Protection Act 2010", "Highlights of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010", "7 Principals", "Personal Data Protection Commissioner", "Registration of Data Users", "Transfer of Data Overseas", "Rights of Data Subjects", "Offences and Liability", "Transitional Period", "How would the Act affect Companies?", "Action Plan / Checklist", "Question & Answers" and "Case Study".

2nd PDC Workshop on Basic Conveyancing Practice
Jeremiah R Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented this 2nd full-day workshop which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm on 4 June 2013. This workshop was attended by 123 participants. The workshop covered the following areas, “Sale and Purchase of property, with or without title, for direct purchase from developer or sub-sale", "Real Property Gains Tax", "Loan Procedures where the borrower is an individual", "Retail banking: understanding the entire documentation process", "Relevant Bar Council Rulings for conveyancing matters" and "Solicitors Remuneration Order 2005".

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for June was held on 5 June 2013. The session, attended by 79 pupils, was led by Vince Chong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were, payment of claims for going to Court were only given at the end of the month and it was insufficient in comparison to the market rate for claims, rude Master and long hours of work.

PDC Seminar on An Analysis of Double Tax Agreement
Thenesh Kannaa, a chartered accountant who specialises in tax advisory services, presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 4:00 pm on 6 June 2013. This seminar was attended by 31 participants. The seminar was conducted based on a sample of 2 Double Tax Agreements concluded by Malaysia.

CPC Meeting with Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah, Kuala Lumpur 
Meeting was held at the KL IPD at 3:30pm. The KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee (CPC) was represented by Amrit Pal Singh, Rajinder Singh, Shamsul Sulaiman, Saha Deva Arunasalam and Yasutha Reny. Main issue discussed at the meeting was with regard to the procedure for meeting and interviewing clients at the Remand Centres (Jinjang and Dang Wangi).

CPC/PDC Seminar on Interpretation of Forensic Crime Scene Report
The KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly presented the seminar by Amidon Anan, former Head of PDRM’s Forensics Laboratory (CSI), on 8 June 2013 at 9:00 am at the KL Bar Auditorium. This seminar was attended by 41 participants.

KL Bar Futsal Competition
This inaugural Futsal Competition, open to members of the Malaysian Bar and pupils-in-chambers only, was held on 8 June 2013 at Allrounder Indoor Soccer Centre, Petaling Jaya. 18 teams participated in the competition; 16 for the men’s category and 2 for the women’s category. PDC Workshop on Financial Planning
Chooi Kum Ying, a Certified Financial Planner, presented the workshop which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm. This free workshop was attended by 53 participants and covered the following areas, "Financial Planning”, “Making it Work”, “Insurance”, “Investment Projection” and “Investment Evaluation”.

Pupils Workshop on Conveyancing
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a conveyancing workshop specifically for pupils on 12 June 2013. Presented by Michael Leow Yon Meng, the workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a conveyancing brief covering the following areas, "Overview of the Conveyancing Process", "Essential clauses found in a Sale & Purchase Agreement", "How to fill up the relevant NLC Forms" and "Practical Pointers for the conveyancing lawyer". 36 pupils attended the workshop.

PDC/CCPC Seminar on Distribution of Muslim Estates
The KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly presented the seminar by Amir Bahari on 14 June 2013 at 3:00 pm at the KL Bar Auditorium. This seminar was attended by 53 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "An Overview of the Legal System", "General Flow Chart", "Contracting and Drawing Up the Terms of Engagement", "Pulsing The Estate Planning Tools Applied", "Syariah Phase: Handling The Syariah Court Requirements", "Civil Court Phase: Handling The Civil Court’s Requirements" and "7.5 Contingencies in Handling the Unexpected Detrimental Situations".

PDC Seminar on Judicial Review 101
Shanmuga Kanesalingam from Messrs Kanesalingam & Co. presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 20 June 2013. This seminar was attended by 50 participants. The seminar covered the following areas,  The basics: "What relief can you get?", "When, where and how do you file the application", "Preparing the accompanying statement", "Procedure at leave stage" and "Steps to be taken after getting leave"; and the Common problems: "Alternative remedies and Ouster Clauses", "Is there a decision at all", "Delays and Extension of Time" and "Stay".

The KLYLC and MCCHR organised a Strategic Litigation Camp from 21 to 23 June 2013 at the Firefly Park Resort, Kuala Selangor. 29 members participated in the Camp.

PWC-YLC Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar II
Spearheaded by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (PWC), the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee and PWC organised a meet and greet informal lunch event dubbed “The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar II” at The Smokehouse Restaurant, Jalan Telawi 3, Bangsar on Saturday, 22 June 2013 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Luncheon provided an excellent platform and avenue for budding lawyers and pupils-in-chambers to dine with senior members of the Bar. The Luncheon saw a total number of 42 members of the Bar attending the event as participants being young lawyers and pupils-in-chambers, senior members and PWC members. Indeed, the younger members of the Bar were humbled by the gracious gestures from the senior members of the Bar who took time off to attend the Luncheon. Click here to read the report. PDC Seminar on Status of Bankrupts/Companies under Liquidation at the Industrial Court
Janice Leo from Messrs Shook Lin & Bok presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 27 June 2013. This seminar was attended by 18 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "Who can lodge an unfair dismissal complaint pursuant to s. 20 of the Industrial Relations Act 1967?", "Who is a bankrupt?", "When is a company wound-up under the Companies Act 1965", "Can a bankrupt or a company in liquidation proceed with an unfair dismissal claim at the Industrial Court?" and "What are the alternative remedies, if any?".

YLC Charity Night 2013
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Charity Night 2013 was held on 28 June 2013 at The Stage @ Avenue K, and featured performances by young lawyers competing to raise the most funds for charity. There were 9 performers lined up to entertain the crowd, The Tangerines, Baro Lux, Riry, The SYB, The Democratic Donuts, W.I.S (Worst Idea Surely), Esther, Viva La France and Danial & Haqq. The money raised this year was in Aid of The Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped (SAMH). The Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped was established in 1964 as a non-profit voluntary organisation. Its headquarters, Wisma Harapan is located in Kuala Lumpur. It was initiated by a group of concerned parents and voluntary workers under the sponsorship of the then Rotary Club of Klang and Port Swettenham. From a humble beginning of 4 children and one teacher, the Association now has 11 special schools and centres catering to more than 520 children with varying mental disabilities.
