Reference Proceedings in Respect and Memory of Departed Members of the KL Bar
A Reference in respect and memory of 6 departed members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar was held at the Kuala Lumpur High Court (NCC 6) on Friday, 1 March 2013  at 9:00 am. The Reference was presided by Y.A. Dato’ Mary Lim Thiam Suan. The departed members were Ng Fook Loy, Henry Lee Yee Lian, Mohd Alakhir Bin Brahim, Mohd Zahid Bin Abd Hamid, Lim Choon Wee and Augustine Christopher Nathan. PDC Seminar on An Introduction to Islamic Banking in Malaysia: Syariah Concept in Islamic Banking
Mohamed Ridza from Messrs Mohamed Ridza & Co presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 6 March 2013. The seminar was attended by 130 participants. 1st KLYLC Meeting
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”) held its first meeting for the 2013/2014 term at the KL Bar Auditorium. The structure of the KLYLC was reorganised to consist of the following Co-Deputy Chairs heading the following sub-units: Daniel Albert (Public Interest Litigation), Yeoh Tung Seng (Socials/Communications) and New Sin Yew (Professional Development). Alvin Oh was appointed as the Representative to the National Young Lawyers Committee.

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to Hibah
Amir Bahari from Messrs Bahari & Bahari presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 13 March 2013. This seminar was attended by 89 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "Definition of Hibah", "The Pillars of Hibah", "Revocation of Hibah", "Moneytising Hibah for your Legal Practice", "Current Legal Trend" and "Reported Case laws".

1st PWC Meeting
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (PWC) held its first meeting for the term 2013/2014 at the KL Bar Auditorium at 7:00 pm on 14 March 2013.  PWC appointed Richard Wee, Choo Dee Wei and Jason Kong as PWC advisors and Tan Shang Neng and Kuldeep Kumar as PWC Co-Deputy Chairs.

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for March was held on 15 March 2013. The session, attended by 82 pupils, was led by Harleen Kaur (Leena). Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and the members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were, problems faced when changing Masters, having to travel outstation to do e-filing, having to pick up calls as firm has no receptionist and having to take instructions from despatch clerks.

Meeting with the Director of the KL Courts
The Civil Practice Committee met the Director of the KL Courts on 18 March 2013 and amongst the issues discussed were the prohibition of smoking within the KL Court Complex, parking issues at the Court and dress code (in particular that of lady lawyers). PDC Seminar on The Fundamentals of Civil Litigation
Mohd Izral Khairy and Tharminder Singh from Messrs Izral Partnership presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 20 March 2013. This seminar was attended by 111 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "Securing Proper Instructions (Warrant to Act, etc)", "File/Client Management", "Jurisdiction of Courts (Territorial, Monetary)", "Subordinate Court Procedures (Commencing Proceedings, Service, Appearance, Filing of Defence, etc)", "High Court Procedures (Commencing Proceedings, Appearance, Filing of Pleadings, etc)", "Drafting Court Documents", "Opinion writing" and "Overview of Appellate Procedures".

Introductory Workshop to Dragon Boating
The 2nd Introductory Workshop to Dragon Boating for 2013 was held on 24 March 2013 at the Putrajaya Maritime Centre at 9:00 am.  It proved to be an invaluable experience for those who attended the workshop.

PDC Seminar on Understanding Service Level Agreements
Jeremiah R. Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 5:30 pm on 26 March 2013. This seminar was attended by 32 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "Characteristics of a SLA", "Drafting a SLA", "Typical Clauses for a SLA", "Outsourcing Illustrations", "Specifying Quality of Service“, “Measuring Performance” and “Risk Management/Mitigation Policies".

Official Launching Ceremony of the PTGS Application System
Chong Wai Kuan, Co-Chair of the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee (CCPC) and 4 other members of the CCPC namely Nahzatul Ain Binti Mohd Khalid, Musyrifah Binti Abdul Malek, and Rita Sabrina Wong Kee Ling represented the CCPC at the Launching Ceremony which was officiated by the Selangor Chief Minister. The PTGS had officially launched 7 application systems which includes online checking of the status of transactions being done at the PTGS.

Meeting with the KL Subordinate Courts
The Civil Practice Committee had a meeting with the Supervising Judge and officers of the KL Subordinate Courts on 29 March 2013 to address the various issues that the members had raised with the Committee. A further meeting is being scheduled to follow up on the issues.

CCPC Talk on Basic Procedures of Corporate Law
Lee Shih, Oh Teik Keng and Dennis Teoh presented the talk which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 4 April 2013. This talk was attended by 87 participants. The talk covered "Incorporation of a Private Limited Company", "Members Voluntary Winding Up" and "Creditors Winding Up’".

Meeting between the PTGS, Bar Council, KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee (CCPC) and the Selangor Bar Conveyancing Practice Committee (SBCPC)
The meeting mainly discussed issues faced by members of the Bar and was chaired by Dato’ Hj Kamarulzaman Bin Jamil, Director of PTGS. A report on the meeting is being prepared.

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to s.218 Companies Winding Up Petitions
Alex Chang from Messrs Alex Chang & Co. presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 5 April 2013. The seminar was attended by 95 participants. The seminar covered the following topics ie "An Introduction to Companies Winding Up Petitions in the New Commercial Courts", "218 Petition - Unable to Pay its Debts", "Affidavit Verifying Petition", "Appointment of a Provisional Liquidator under s231", "Advertisement of the Petition in the Newspapers", "Registrar's Certificate", "Affidavit In Opposition to Petition", "The Unless Order", "Appointment of Liquidator", "Costs", and "Advocacy in the Companies Winding Up Court".

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for April was held on 10 April 2013. The session, attended by 83 pupils, was led by Ravin Singh. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were, problems at the Shah Alam High Court, the delay in the filing of the petition papers, former Masters refusing to sign “Borang Kerajinan”, rude staff at the RKKK (Petitions for Admission Registry) and the possibility of abolishing the Ethics exam.

Annual Gathering between the KLBC and Selangor Bar Committee (“SBC”)
The Annual Gathering between the KLBC and SBC, which was hosted by the SBC this term, was held on 12 April 2013 at Merchant Pub, Armada Hotel Petaling Jaya. This annual meet was for the new office bearers of the KLBC and SBC to get to know each other and to discuss on how to work closely to cater to the mutual needs of members of both the KL Bar and Selangor Bar.

KLYLC Retreat at Gold Coast, Morib
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”) decided to invite new young faces for the KLYLC Retreat. We had 7 facilitators and 32 new young lawyers participating in the retreat which was held on 13 to 14 April 2013. The 7 facilitators were the KLYLC Chair, Khaizan Sharizad (Sherrie), KLYLC Co-Deputy Chair Yeoh Tung Seng, Yohendra Nadarajan,  Bryan Ho Jiann  Yau, Crystal Sue Nilsson, Kirsty Lim Jun-Zhi and Sheelaa Ragavan. PDC Workshop on Basic Conveyancing Practice
Jeremiah R Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented the workshop which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 9:30 am on 18 April 2013. This workshop was attended by 120 participants. The workshop covered the following areas ie “Sale and Purchase of property, with or without title, for direct purchase from developer or sub-sale", "Real Property Gains Tax", "Loan Procedures where the borrower is an individual", "Retail banking: understanding the entire documentation process", "Relevant Bar Council Rulings for conveyancing matters" and "Solicitors Remuneration Order 2005".

KL Bar Ugadi, Vaisakhi, Puthandu and Vishu Night
The KL Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee together with the Young Lawyers Committee organised an Ugadi, Vaisakhi, Puthandu and Vishu Night on 18.04.2013 at Chutney Mary Restaurant in Bangsar. 43 people attended the event. It was an enjoyable evening. Click here to view the photos.

PDC Seminar on New Boundaries in Tax Law: Capital Allowance for Carpark, RPGT v Income Tax, Compulsory Land Acquisition
S Saravana Kumar from Messrs Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 19 April 2013. This seminar was attended by 56 participants. The seminar covered the following cases “KPHDN v Tropiland”, “KPHDN v Gracom, KPHDN v Metacorp and KPHDN v Pelangi”.

KLYLC Earth Day 2013 Activity Week – Collection of Recyclables, Paper, Bottles & Cans
In conjunction with Earth Day Celebration which falls on 22 April 2013, the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee organised a ‘Collection of Recyclables, Paper, Bottles and Cans’ from 22 to 26 April 2013.

Seminar on Environmental Issues and the Role of the Bar
To kick start the KLYLC Earth Day 2013 Activity Week, NoorHajran Mohd Noor from Messrs NoorHajran Mohd Noor and Roger Chan Weng Keng from Messrs Chan Weng Keng and Associates presented an environmental seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 22 April 2013. This seminar was attended by 38 participants. As encouraged, the participants brought along recyclable items for admission to the seminar.

Seminar on Fundamentals of Bankruptcy Proceedings
Trevor Jason Mark Padasian from Messrs Skrine & Co. presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 24 April 2013. This seminar was attended by 96 participants. The seminar covered the following areas ie  "Bankruptcy principles", "Problematic issues in bankruptcy" and "Relationship to winding-up proceedings".
