Meeting with the Registrar of the High Court of Malaya (PMT)
The Civil Court Liaison Committee (CCLC) met up with the Registrar of the High Court of Malaya (PMT) and 3 other Court Officers on 4 December 2012. The meeting was called by the PMT to discuss matters pertaining to the filing of documents. The CCLC however took the opportunity to raise other issues amongst which were: Lack of proper space for file searches to be conducted; Need to have a proper procedure/manual for file searches; No-smoking policy to be strictly enforced at the KL Court Complex; Problems relating to the e-filing system; and Rejection of Documents without grounds/explanations. The Court too raised a number of other issues such as Payment of deposit for execution; Improvement on the rules/law of execution; and Public Auction. The PMT also indicated that the Court is currently conducting a survey on how to improve the Malaysian Courts' ranking at the World Bank and would want to get feedback from members of the Bar for the said case study. The CCLC was further informed by the PMT of 2 proposals by the Judiciary for the future; Automated Signing of Documents and Jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court and would be seeking feedback from the Bar as well.

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for November was held on 05 December 2012. The session, attended by 80 pupils, was led by Ravin Singh and Jason Kong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were the CLP exams, trust issues between Master and Pupil, QMS system in the Shah Alam High Court and Low Allowance.

PDC Seminar on Judicial Review 101
Shanmuga Kanesalingam from Messrs Kanesalingam & Co presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm on 07 December 2012. The seminar was attended by 61 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, The basics; "What relief can you get?", "When, where and how do you file the application", "Preparing the accompanying Statement", "Procedure at Leave stage" and "Steps to be taken after getting leave" and the Common problems; "Alternative remedies and Ouster Clauses", "Is there a decision at all", "Delays and Extension of Time" and "Stay".

KL Bar Year End Party
A year-end party was hosted at The Pool in Nihonkan, Jalan Ampang on 8 December 2012. Guest were treated to a delectable buffet spread as well as a variety of canapés, coupled with free flow of selected drinks, with the cool ambience of the venue’s signature pool. Guests were also entertained with live performances by members of the Bar and a DJ throughout the event.

Dragon Boat Competition - Pesta Penang
The KL-BARbarians competed on 08 to 09 December 2012 at the Pesta Penang Dragon Boat Race 2012. It has only been a year since the KL-BARbarians were teamed up but they have improved by leaps and bounds. The last 6 months have seen a mix of experienced members as well as newcomers coming together to race in Penang . Click here to read the full report.

PDC Seminar on The Fundamentals of Bankruptcy Proceedings

2nd Introductory Session to the Legal Profession for Law Undergraduates
The Young Lawyers Committee organised a 2nd Introductory Session to the Legal Profession for Law Undergraduates to provide law undergraduates an insight into the legal profession. The session was held at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium at the Bar Council from 9.30am to 2.30pm on 15 December 2012. The following topics were presented, “History, Role and Relevance of the Malaysian Bar” by Christopher Leong, “S.42 LPA – The Answer to Life, Universe and Everything” by Edmond Bon Tai Soon, “BVC, CLP or Local University” by Khaizan Sharizad and Wilson Chia and “Myths and Realities of Practice” by Brendan Navin Siva. 103 participants from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Advance Tertiary College (ATC) attended the session.

PWC Pupils Workshop on Civil Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a civil litigation workshop specifically for pupils on 20 December 2012 by Colin Andrew Pereira and Sanjeev Kumar Rasiah focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a civil brief covering the following areas, "Opinion Writing Exercise", "Drafting of Pleadings Exercise", and "Presenting a case in Court". 53 participants attended the workshop.

Dragon Boat Competition - Malacca
The KL-BARbarians competed on 29 to 30 December 2012 at the Dragon Boat Competition in Malacca. The Mens and Mixed team came in 3rd in their respective categories and the Womens team came in 2nd.
