KLBC Activities Report for April 2015

2 April 2015 Pupils Workshop on Civil Litigation The KLBC Pupils Committee organised a Civil Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 2 April 2015. Presented by Colin Andrew Pereira and Sanjeev Kumar Rasiah, and attended by a total of 50 pupils, the Workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, “Opinion writing exercise”; “Drafting of pleadings exercise”; and “Presenting a case in court”. 9 April 2015 Pupils Introduction Session Organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for April was held on 9 April 2015. The session, attended by 82 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. Similarly like previous sessions, Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. KLBC EC Supports Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s Initiative in declaring the 1st and 3rd Sunday Mornings of Every Month as Car Free Mornings

The KLBC Environmental Committee (KLBC EC) has participated in Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) initiative in dedicating the first and third Sunday morning of the month as ‘car free mornings’, on 19 April 2015. The KL Car Free Morning sees participants from the Kuala Lumpur Bar arriving as early as 6:00 am to loan bicycles from OCBC Cycle (Note: OCBC was the sponsor for the car free morning initiative on 19 April 2015). The bicycles were given out on a first come, first served basis. The event was flagged off at 7:00 am to a rousing support. Our 7km journey was accompanied by street entertainers, live bands, friendly and wide smiling City Hall Officers working hard to keep vehicles off the charted route, horse-drawn carriages with couples showcasing Malaysian traditional wedding costumes and hardworking City Hall personnel tailing the horses closely, scooping horses faeces - keeping the streets of KL squeaky clean. KLBC Activities Report for March 2015

4 March 2015 Conveyancing Workshop for Pupils Organised specifically for pupils by the KLBC Pupils Committee, this workshop held on 4 March 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm was presented by Michael Leow Yon Meng. It focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a conveyancing brief covering the following areas: "Overview of the Conveyancing Process", "Essential clauses found in a Sale & Purchase Agreement", "How to fill up the relevant NLC Forms" and "Practical Pointers for the conveyancing lawyer". YLC shares insights into legal practice with Law Students at Taylor’s University

On 21 March 2015, members of the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee (“ KLBC YLC ”) made their way to the Lakeside Campus of Taylor’s University. The objective and purpose? To speak to the first and second year law students on practising law in Malaysia from a practitioner's point of view. There were approximately 40 students who attended this event and we congregated in one of the many lecture halls in Taylor’s University. The morning started with an introduction by Ms. Marini Arumugam and Dr. Assad, the LL.B Programme Director of Taylor’s University. This was followed by a speech from Dinesh Nandrajog, the Deputy Chairperson of the KLBC YLC and a speech from the Chairperson of the KLBC YLC. The participants were then broken up into groups of seven to eight to facilitate informal discussions between them and the members of the KLBC YLC.  Each group was accompanied and led by two to three members of the KLBC YLC. KLBC Activities Report for February 2015

5 February 2015 Pupils Introduction Session Organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the pupils introduction session for February was held on 5 February 2015. The session, attended by 85 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. As tradition goes, the session also gives an opportunity for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. The seminar was attended by 33 participants. 13 January 2015 PDC Seminar on Accounting and Finance for Lawyers (Part 1) Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 13 January 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 81 participants. KL Bar Run 2015

Sunday, 25 January 2015 - When a group of lawyers start gathering, it might be a cause for concern. But not today for the tranquility of a beautiful morning was broken by the phenomenal sight of some 240 lawyers gathering at the Lake Gardens to participate in the inaugural KL Bar Run. Lawyers from many different persuasions, including from far-flung corners of the Peninsular came with the sole of objective of competing in this run.  The KL Bar Run 2015 organised by the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC), a project under the KLBC Sports & Recreation Committee was officially launched on 20 December 2014. Launched to promote a healthy and sporting lifestyle among lawyers, the KL Bar Run takes the form of a relay wherein the baton in the form of a plastic gavel, symbolic of the judge’s gavel, will be relayed amongst 4 runners per team.
