KLBC Activities Report for June 2014

5 June 2014 Pupils Introduction Session Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for June was held on 5 June 2014. The session, attended by 62 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session was no leave during pupillage. Saturday Morning Sweat: KL Bar Futsal Competition

Saturday June 28, 2014 morning was made interesting when members of the Bar decided to put on colourful jerseys for the second installation of the Annual KL Bar Futsal Competition. The gig which was held in Samba de Futsal Court, Petaling Jaya saw strong participation and support from the legal fraternity and improvements over the inaugural 2013 edition.  The Annual KL Bar Futsal Competition was pioneered by Peter-Douglas Ling, Chairperson of the KL Bar Sports & Recreation Committee, last year in-line with the objective set by the Committee to promote sportsmanship among members of the Bar by organising various sports activities. Similar to last year, the well-ran competition was organised by a team of dedicated sports enthusiasts—Sri Sarguna Raj, Joshua Tay and Alwin Rajasurya who also took part in the competition. KLBC Activities Report for May 2014

1 to 3 May 2014 45th Malaysia-Singapore Bench & Bar Games and 5th Quadrangular Bar Games The Games, hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Bar on behalf of the Malaysian Bar for the very first time and held in Kuala Lumpur from 1 to 3 May 2014, was a tremendous success. The Malaysian Bar emerged triumphant and recorded its best ever result by winning both the Judges’ Trophy and the Quadrangular Bar Games.  Click here to view the results and for reports on the individual matches and here for the photos. 4 May 2014  Coffee & Law The Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) had its first session of “Coffee & Law” on 4 May 2014 at Dr. Café in Publika hosted by Wan Zafran Pawancheek. The “Coffee & Law” event is similar to a book club where after reading a particular book, a group of people gather and discuss the plot of the book. The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar IV

On 17 May 2014, the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (“KLPWC”) hosted the Luncheon; a meet and greet social event designed to give an opportunity for younger members of the Bar to share experiences and exchange views with and be inspired by senior members of the Bar over the course of a luncheon. The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar IV, was held at the grandiose President’s Room of the Royal Selangor Club at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. The Luncheon draws inspiration from the Inns of Courts' dining sessions. The cosy atmosphere of the Royal Selangor Club perfectly fitted all 37 attendees of the Luncheon. 28 of the attendees comprised of pupils-in-chambers from various law firms. The Luncheon was very kindly graced by nine senior members of the Bar (“the Seniors”) from a very diverse range of practice. Cycling Trip at Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya

On Saturday, 31 May 2014, the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (KLPWC) and the KL Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee (KLSACC) organised a cycling trip at Taman Pertanian (Botanical Garden) Bukit Cahaya located in Shah Alam. The organising committee was headed by Nur Khairunissa and assisted by Randy and Mervyn. The day started with some of the participants gathering at McDonalds, Jalan Maarof, Bangsar between 6:00 am and 7:20 am to car pool to Bukit Cahaya. At 7:20 am, five cars left with a total of 13 participants. We reached Bukit Cahaya at approximately 7:45 am. We met up with the rest of the participants who had arrived earlier. Some participants arrived just before 8:30 am. We had a total of 21 participants who joined us to conquer Bukit Cahaya by cycling.
