KLBC Activities Report for May 2014

1 to 3 May 2014
45th Malaysia-Singapore Bench & Bar Games and 5th Quadrangular Bar Games
The Games, hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Bar on behalf of the Malaysian Bar for the very first time and held in Kuala Lumpur from 1 to 3 May 2014, was a tremendous success. The Malaysian Bar emerged triumphant and recorded its best ever result by winning both the Judges’ Trophy and the Quadrangular Bar Games.  Click here to view the results and for reports on the individual matches and here for the photos.


4 May 2014 
Coffee & Law
The Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) had its first session of “Coffee & Law” on 4 May 2014 at Dr. Café in Publika hosted by Wan Zafran Pawancheek. The “Coffee & Law” event is similar to a book club where after reading a particular book, a group of people gather and discuss the plot of the book. Instead of a book, a case will be discussed and the case and direction of the discussion is determined by the Host.

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for May was held on 8 May 2014. The session, attended by 76 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were the unfriendly staff at the RKKK (Petition) Registry, no guidance in filling up the Admission papers and difficulty getting time off to attend Seminars and Workshops. The video montage on the History of the Malaysian Bar was reintroduced at this session and it was well received by the pupils.



9 May 2014
Meeting with the Wilayah Land Office “Muhibbah Meeting”
The meeting was well attended by representatives from KL Bar CCPC, SBC Conveyancing & SRE Committee and BC Conveyancing Practice Committee. Issues discussed included the newly launched simple guidelines for the public on how to fill up their land office documents, matters regarding strata titles, power of attorney, launching of the e-consent and reasons of rejected documents. Notes of the meeting had been sent out via e-blast on 28 May 2014.

9 May 2014
Annual Get-together between the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and Selangor Bar Committee (SBC)
The Annual Gathering between the KLBC and SBC, which was hosted by the KLBC this term, was held on 9 May 2014 at Aria Restaurant, Plaza Damansara. This annual meet was for the new office bearers of the KLBC and SBC to get to know each other and to discuss on how to work closely to cater to the mutual needs of members of both the KL Bar and Selangor Bar.

PDC Seminar on Personal Data Protection Act 2010
Jeremiah R. Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented this seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 2:30 pm on 15 May 2014. The seminar was attended by 44 participants. The seminar covered "Introduction to the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010", "PDPA Compliance", "Dealing with the 7 Data Principles" and "PDPA Implementation".

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to Bonds
Kelvin Loh Hsien Han from Messrs Rahmat Lim & Partners presented this seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 2:30 pm on 16 May 2014. The seminar was attended by 58 participants. The seminar covered "Key differences with loans", "Different types of bonds and their structures", "Typical issuance process", "Information memorandum", "Applicable laws" and "Typical legal documentation".

YMG Gathering
The Young Members Group of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Malaysia Branch ("YMG") organised a social get together with the Young Lawyers Committee (YLC) on 16 May 2014 at Mezzanine in Publika. The event was attended by 12 members of the YLC and 15 members of the YMG.

The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar IV
The 4th edition of the Luncheon was successfully organised by KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee. Titled, “The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar IV”, it was held on 17 May 2014 at the President’s Room of the Royal Selangor Club – Dataran and attended by nine senior lawyers and 28 pupils. Blood Donation Campaign 
A Blood Donation Campaign, jointly organised by the KL Bar Social, Art & Culture Committee and the KL Court with the assistance of the National Blood Bank, was held on 19 May 2014 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Level 2 of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at Jalan Duta. Members of the Bar, Court staff and members of the public nobly came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive. Click here to read the report and here to view the photos.

Pupils Workshop on Civil Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a Civil Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 21 May 2014 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief, covering the following areas, "Opinion writing exercise", "Drafting of pleadings exercise" and "Presenting a case in court". 51 pupils attended the workshop which was conducted by Colin Andrew Pereira and Sanjeev Kumar Rasiah.

YLC Seminar on Writ of Seizure & Sale
Alex Anton Netto from Messrs CK Hau & Co presented this seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm. The seminar, organised by the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”), was attended by 43 participants. The seminar covered the following areas, "What is Writ of Seizure & Sale (WSS)?", "Under what circumstances would one make a WSS application?" and "The Application of Order 47 Rules of Court 2012 and the relevant cases".

Cycling Trip at Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya
Another successful event organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, this cycling trip attracted 20 pupils and lawyers and a few non-lawyers as well. This is a record number for an outdoor activity especially on an early Saturday morning. Everyone had such a wonderful time that they were looking forward to more outdoor activities and have suggested jogging, hiking/jungle trekking and team building games/activities.
