2–19 September 2025

LAC Pupils’ Programme Training – Batch 123/2025

Organised by the Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the LAC Pupils’ Programme training for Batch 123/2025 was conducted from 2 to 19 September 2025. The sessions were held physically at the Bar Council Auditorium, and the LAC KL Training Room. Trainers for this batch included Morhaneraj A/L Rajakumaran, Narandra A/L Kangatharan, Terrence Lee Rohui, Sumitra Devi A/P Krishnan, Collin Arvind Andrew, Teoh Alvare, Onnelea Dion Sandosam, Chan Yen Hu, along with representatives from the respective NGO partners.

Mediator Training: Turning Tension Into Teatime
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, the seminar featured Ho Kok Yew as the speaker. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, the session welcomed 13 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

Art Revealed: Private Gallery Viewing On 6 September 2025
The Art Revealed: Private Gallery Viewing took place on Saturday, 6 September 2025 at Rissim Contemporary, Bangsar. It was attended by approximately 20 participants from diverse backgrounds, including members of the Bar and the general public.



9,22 & 26 September 2025
Pupils Admission To The Bar Briefing
Organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee, the briefings for the Pupils Admission to the Bar for September 2025 was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on: -

  • 9 September 2025, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, with 75 pupils attending the briefing. The briefing was conducted by Michelle Siah Yi Yen;
  • 22 September 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, with 23 pupils attending the briefing. The briefing was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo. and
  • 26 September 2025, from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm, with 41 pupils attending the briefing. The briefing was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo.

The Basics Of Judicial Review
Organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee, this webinar was conducted by Kee Hui Yee and was moderated by Dineshwaran Yokheswarem. The webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. There were 37 participants at the webinar.



11 September 2025
Practical Approach To Conduct A Full Criminal Trial
Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this seminar was presented by K.A. Ramu and moderated by Jason Kong.

It was held from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the KL Bar meeting room. 14 participants attended the webinar.

The Basics of Tax Treatment of Inter-Company Transactions
Organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee, this webinar was conducted by Abhilaash Subramaniam. The webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  37 participants attended the webinar.

Arts & Culture: The Legal Conversation Series - Session 2: History, Heritage & Ownership
The dialogue for the “Arts and Culture: The Legal Conversation Series – Session 2: History, Heritage & Ownership” took place on 18 September 2025 at the KL Bar Auditorium, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

The session facilitated meaningful discussions on legal issues surrounding arts, heritage, and ownership, contributing to ongoing dialogue within the legal and cultural communities. It was attended by approximately 51 participants from diverse backgrounds, including members of the Bar and the general public.

The speakers were Dato V Nadarajah, Dr. Kamal Solhaimi, and Dr. Helen Ting.

ESG Essentials: Understanding the Changing Business & Legal Landscape
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, the webinar featured N.G. Vinod and Edey Suresh as the speakers. The webinar was held via Zoom from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and the session welcomed 33 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

I Think I am Fine, But Am I? Mental Health Forum
The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee Gender Equality & Diversity Committee (KLBC GEDC), in collaboration with HELP University, successfully organised “I Think I’m Fine, But Am I? A Forum on Mental Health & Everything In Between” on Saturday, 20 September 2025, via Zoom.

The session was designed to provide a safe and supportive platform for participants to connect and seek guidance anonymously from mental health experts on topics such as anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, and finding purpose amid life’s challenges.

The forum featured two distinguished speakers, Dr. Victor Goh (PhD, Applied Psychology), Applied Psychologist, and Bashir Bashardoost, Registered Counsellor, who shared their expertise on recognising early signs of mental distress and practical strategies for emotional resilience. The session was moderated by Sofiya Imran, Legal Associate at Raja, Darryl & Loh, who guided the discussion with sensitivity and professionalism.

The interactive format created a confidential and stigma-free space for lawyers and individuals in high-pressure roles to engage meaningfully with mental health professionals and reflect on their well-being.

With 11 participants attending online, the forum successfully fostered open and compassionate dialogue, reaffirming KLBC GEDC’s commitment to promoting mental health awareness and supporting emotional well-being within the legal community.

MyBar Carnival 2025
Organised by the Bar Council, the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) participated in the MyBar Carnival 2025, held on 21 September 2025, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the KLIA Express Arrival Hall, KL Sentral. The following volunteer lawyers took part and managed public enquiries throughout the day Morhaneraj A/L Rajakumaran, Chan Yen Hui, Nooradila Binti Abdull Aziz, Parvinder Kaur A/P Harbindar Singh, Narandra A/L Kangatharan, and Melissa Chua Su Lynn. The event recorded a positive turnout, with strong interest from the public and meaningful engagement throughout the day.




22 September 2025
Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
Jointly organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session in May was held on 22 September 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Tay Kit Hoo, the session was attended by 84 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the elections to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It also included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Brenda Rangithan.

NYLPC Leadership Series: Kuala Lumpur Edition
The National Young Lawyers and Pupils Committee (NYLPC), in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLBC YLC), successfully organised the NYLPC Leadership Series: Kuala Lumpur Edition on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Centred on the theme “Leadership in Times of Crisis,” the session featured two of Malaysia’s most respected legal luminaries Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan, Founding Partner of Sreenevasan and former President of the Malaysian Bar (2007–2009), and Christopher Leong, Partner at Chooi & Company and former President of the Malaysian Bar (2013–2015). Both speakers shared their invaluable experiences and insights on leading with courage, integrity, and empathy during challenging periods in the legal landscape.

Moderated by Mavin Thillainathan, Co-Chairperson of the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee, the session offered young lawyers, pupils, and law students’ practical guidance on building resilience, upholding ethical leadership, and sustaining professional excellence in times of uncertainty.

With 60 participants in attendance, the event concluded with an engaging Q&A and networking session, reinforcing NYLPC’s and KLBC YLC’s shared commitment to cultivating strong, principled leadership among Malaysia’s emerging legal professionals.


24 September 2025
LAC Pupils’ Programme Batch 122/2025 – Exit Evaluation
Organised by the Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the Exit Evaluation for Batch 122/2025 was conducted on 24 September 2025, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The session was held physically at the Bar Council Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia, and facilitated by Terrence Lee Rohui and Morheneraj Rajakumaran. A total of 121 pupils attended the session.



23 & 24 September 2025
Conveyancing Practice Workshop
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this workshop was held from 23 and 24 September 2025 via Zoom.

There were five sessions on 23 September 2025 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. These sessions were presented by Chong Wai Kuan, Dennis Teoh, Sarah Kambali and Susan Joseph.

There were a further four sessions on 24 September 2025, held from 10:00am to 5:10pm. These sessions were presented by Sarguna Kumaari, Donny Kwa Soo Chuan and Susan Joseph.

The workshop was attended by 79 participants and covered the following areas:-

  • “Crafting The Final SPA”;
  • “Conditions, Precedents And Subsequent”;
  • “Billing”;
  • “Private Caveats & Conflict Of Interest”;

Basics of Employment Law
Organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee, this webinar was conducted by Louis Liaw Vern Xien and was moderated by Nur Fathin Farina Binti Mokhtar. The webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and we saw 44 participants attending the same.

LAC Pupils’ Programme Batch 122/2025 – Exit Evaluation
Organised by the Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the Exit Evaluation for Batch 122/2025 was conducted on 26 September 2025, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The session was held physically at the Bar Council Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia, and facilitated by Terrence Lee Rohui.​ A total of 151 pupils attended the session.

LPPKN - Health First: Screening Today For A Stronger Tomorrow
The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee Gender Equality & Diversity Committee (KLBC GEDC), in collaboration with the Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN), successfully organised “Health First: Screening Today for a Stronger Tomorrow” on Saturday, 27 September 2025.

This initiative aimed to foster health awareness, particularly on the importance of early cancer detection and preventive healthcare. The programme offered free screenings for eligible women, including mammogram test registration (ages 40–70) and HPV DNA tests for cervical cancer screening (ages 30–65). Additionally, both men and women could access a comprehensive health screening package for only RM10, which included Body Mass Index (BMI) checks, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol tests.

The event welcomed 12 registered participants, with further walk-ins, reflecting a positive community response. Participants had the opportunity to engage with health professionals and take proactive steps toward improving their overall well-being.

This health initiative successfully underscored KLBC GEDC’s commitment to promoting preventive care and health awareness among members of the legal fraternity and the public.

KL Bar x iPAM dialogue - Comrades-In-Arms: Interplay Between Insolvency
Practitioners and Lawyers
The KL Bar, in collaboration with the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Malaysia (iPAM), successfully hosted a joint dialogue titled “Comrades-In-Arms: Interplay Between Insolvency Practitioners and Lawyers to Protect and Maximize Value for Creditors” on 29 September 2025 at Ssavoury Restaurant & Event Space from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

The event was well-received, fostering stronger relationships and understanding between insolvency practitioners and lawyers, with a shared focus on maximizing value for creditors. It was attended by approximately 101 participants from diverse backgrounds, including members of the Bar and the general public.

The speakers were Victor Saw Seng Kee, Andrew Chiew Ean Vooi, and Bella Chu Chai Yee.

Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) Training for Lawyers (Parts 1 & 2)
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), Parts 1 & 2 of the YBGK training were held on 29 September 2025, from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, at the Bar Council Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. The training focused on YBGK administration and procedures relating to Arrest, Remand, Bail, and Mitigation. The session was conducted by Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, Chan Yen Hui, and SShashi Devan A/L Thalmalingama and Chong Yin Xin, Samantha. A total of 70 lawyers attended the full-day training.

Immigration, ATIPSOM & SOSMA
Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this seminar was presented by Harpal Singh.

The seminar covered the following three main topics:

Immigration Law In Malaysia

  • Handling Immigration Offences & Challenging The Prosecution’s Evidence In Court
  • Issues Faced By Immigrants After Sentencing
  • Dependent Visas For Foreign Spouses & Their Children
  • Immigration Law & How It Relates To The Anti-Trafficking in Persons And Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM)

Atipsom (Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007)

  • Types of Offences in ATIP and SOM
  • What are the key elements in ATIPSOM offences
  • How to attack depositions
  • How the Immigration Act 1959/63 relates to ATIPSOM
  • Court Jurisdiction in Bail Application

SOSMA (Security Offences Special Measures Act 2012)

  • Under Part IIIA of the ATIPSOM, namely offences involving Smuggling of Migrants are classified as security offences under the First Schedule of the SOSMA. Hence allowing application of SOSMA to SOM offences.
  • Challenges posed by certain provision in SOSMA during trial - such as s.4(5) involving remand up to 28 days without being brought to the Magistrate, s.13(2) restrictive bail, s.14-16 admissibility of a protected witness evidence, s.18A that allowed the admissibility of an accused’s statement, s.20 allowing all documents seized to be admissible, s.30 allowing an accused to remained in detention while pending appeal by the prosecutor.
  • How to address these challenges.

It was held from 11:00am to 6:15pm at Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. We had 38 participants.
