KLBC Activities Report For May 2025


5, 13 & 23 May 2025
Pupils Admission To The Bar Briefing
Organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee, the briefings for the Pupils Admission to the Bar for May 2025 were held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on: -
 
(i)            5 May 2025, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, with 24 pupils attending the briefing. 
          The briefing was conducted by Michelle Siah Yi Yen;
 
(ii)          13 May 2025, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, with 23 pupils attending the briefing. 
          The briefing was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo; and
 
(iii)          23 May 2025, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, with 10 pupils attending the briefing. 
          The briefing was conducted by Michelle Siah Yi Yen.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC KL”) Pupils Orientation for
Compulsory Legal Aid Duty Batch 122/2025
The orientation for pupils of Batch 122/2025 was held on Monday, 5 May 2025 from 9:00am to 5:30pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. The session was facilitated by Morhaneraj Rajakumar and Collin Arvind Andrew. A total of 127 pupils attended the orientation.

Key Terms And Importance Of A Shareholders Agreements
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Sharifah Shafika Bt. Syed Abbas Alsagoff and moderated by Jason Kong.
 
The webinar covered the following areas:
 
(i)    “The necessity for a Shareholders Agreement particularly in a joint venture arrangement”;

(ii)            (ii)  “What are the salient terms to be incorporated into a Shareholders Agreement”; and

(iii)     (iii)  “The incorporation and importance of reserved matters in a Shareholders Agreement”.

It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 141 participants.

How To Succeed In Federal Court Leave Applications
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar featured GK Ganesan as the speaker and was moderated by Lheela a/p Jeganathan. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, the session welcomed 49 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC KL”) Pupils Orientation for
Compulsory Legal Aid Duty Batch 122/2025
The orientation for pupils of Batch 122/2025 was held on Monday, 9 May 2025, from 9:00am to 5:30pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. The session was facilitated by Morhaneraj Rajakumar, Ravinder Singh Dhalliwal and Mohd Radzlan Bin Jalaludin. A total of 146 pupils attended the orientation.

Pickleball Social
The Pickleball Social was held on 10 May 2025 at Hyprground Pickleball - S19, attracting a total of 32 enthusiastic participants. The event provided a lively and engaging environment for pickleball enthusiasts to connect, compete and enjoy the game. After an exciting day of play, attendees transitioned to a relaxed social gathering at Kanna Curry House in Petaling Jaya, where they had the opportunity to unwind, share experiences and foster new friendships in a casual setting.

KLBC Meeting with Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC)
The KLBC Professional Development Committee had a meeting with members of SIDC to discuss collaborations on organising finance-related seminars tailored for lawyers, with a focus on improving understanding of financial statements and financial concepts relevant to legal practice. The Meeting was held on 14 May 2025 (Wednesday) at 10:00am at Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC), No. 3, Persiaran Bukit Kiara, Bukit Kiara, 50490 Kuala Lumpur.
 
The meeting was attended by Tengku Zarina Tengku Chik (Chief Executive Officer, SIDC), Farah Zita Bt Arshad (Senior Manager, Programme Development, SIDC), Sarimah Ramthandin (Director/Head, Innovation, Advisory & Industry Engagement, SIDC) Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ghazali (Manager, Client Coverage and Sales, SIDC), the Honourable Justice Dato’ Azizul Azmi bin Adnan, Brendan Navin Siva, Nimalan Devaraja (Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee), Jeremiah Rais (Co-chairperson of the Professional Development Committee), Melissa Linda Dass (Executive Director), Muhammad Zulfadzli (Officer) and Darshani Pillai (Officer).

Understanding The Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Report
Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this seminar was presented by Amidon Anan and moderated by Purshotaman a/l Puvanendran.
 
The seminar covered the following areas:
 
(i)            “A concise statement of facts”;
(ii)          “Methodology employed”;
(iii)         “Methods of analysis”; and
(iv)         “Opinions / supporting data”.

The seminar was held from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. We had 27 participants.

KLBC Gender Equality & Diversity Committee (GEDC), Malaysia Centre For Constitutionalism And Human Rights (MCCHR), Pertubuhan Wanita Orang Asal Malaysia (PWOAM), And Rimbawatch (RW) Workshop
Organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the event was held on 18 May 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 8:30am to 5:00pm. This event was presented by Tay Kit Hoo, Kee Hui Yee & Firdaus Husni and moderated by Brenda Rangithan and Aarthi Jeyarajah. We had 31 participants. This workshop aimed to educate and equip Orang Asli women leaders with basic knowledge on their legal rights, remedies and options when facing various obstacles and hardships in their daily lives.

Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
Jointly organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session in May was held on 19 May 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Tay Kit Hoo, the session was attended by 78 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the elections to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.
 
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was led by Aarthi Jeyarajah.

Blood Donation Drive
Organised by the Social Committee, the annual blood donation campaign was held on 21 May 2025 at Lobby Level 1, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex with the assistance of the National Blood Bank. Members of the Bar as well as Court staff and members of the public came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive. 71 donors registered.

Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Valerie Chong and moderated by Wong Kar Ling.
 
The webinar covered the following areas: -
 
(i) “Duties of the JMB/MC”;
(ii) “AGM/EGM”;
(iii) “Account”;
(iv) “By-laws”; and
(v) “Case studies”.
 
It was held via Zoom from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. We had 99 participants.

Reference Proceedings
A Reference Proceedings was held for 20 departed members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar on Friday, 23 May 2025 at 9:00am and 10:00am. Presided by Y.A Dato’ Ameerjet Singh a/l Serjit Singh and Y.A Dato' Anand Ponnudurai. The Reference Proceedings was in honour and memory of Shankar Gunaratnam, Grace Choong Chui Chui, V. Jeevaretnam (Jeevaretnam a/l Valautham), Jason Reginald Gomez, Tan Jee Tjun, Charles Nicholson, Ranjini a/p George Hunt Tharumaratnam, Lee See Loon, Terence Phillips, Chong Juen Quan, Dato’ Harpal Singh Grewal, Razali bin Puyamin, Dato’ Hanif Bin Hashim, Francis Ng Sai Wai, Khairuzzaman b Muhammad, Joseph a/l Iruthayam, Hong Nan Tong, Manjeet Singh Dhillon, Mohd Kharip Shah Bin Yusof and Vitwat Sae Ng.
