KLBC Activities Report For April 2025

7 April 2025
Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
Jointly organised by the Pupils Welfare Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session in April was held on 7 April 2025 at the KL Bar Auditorium. Led by Ooi Jia Liang, the session was attended by 76 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the elections to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period. 

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was led by Brenda Rangithan.


14 & 25 April 2025
Pupils Admission To The Bar Briefing
The Pupils Admission to the Bar Briefings were held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on 14 April 2025 and 25 April 2025. The first session, led by Michelle Siah Yi Yen, took place from 3:00pm to 4:00pm and was attended by 13 pupils. The second session, led by Tay Kit Hoo, was held from 3:30pm to 4:30pm and was attended by 22 pupils.

Drafting Commercial Contracts 
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, the seminar featured Jeremiah R. Gurusamy as the speaker. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:15pm to 4:15pm, the session welcomed 44 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

KL Bar Hari Raya Open House 
Organised by the Social, Arts & Culture Committee, the Hari Raya Open House was held on 16 April 2025 at the KL Bar Auditorium. This event provided a wonderful opportunity for KL Bar members and pupils to gather and celebrate the festive occasion of Hari Raya. A total of 127 individuals attended, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

Unlocking The World Of Islamic Finance & Understanding The Basics: A Modern Approach For Future Legal Experts 
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Edham Reza Shah Bin Dato' Abdul Rahman and moderated by Nur Fathin Farina Binti Mokhtar.

The webinar covered the following areas:

It was held from 3:30pm to 5:30pm via Zoom. The webinar was attended by 92 participants.

18 April 2025
Meeting with the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA)
A meeting was held on 18 April 2025 at 3:00pm at the Chief Secretary’s Meeting Room, Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA). The meeting was to discuss a proposal by the Legal Aid Centre KL to establish legal aid service counters at Industrial Courts nationwide. The initiative aims to provide legal representation and assistance to underprivileged claimants.

The meeting was chaired by YBhg. Datuk Azman bin Yusof, Chief Secretary of KESUMA. Representatives from the Malaysian Bar attended the meeting, including members from the Bar Council National Legal Aid & YBGK Committee and the Industrial and Employment Law Committee. The Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC KL”) were represented by Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, Sumitra Veeriah, and Jeevanathan Angappan.

Recent Developments On Industrial Relations & Employment Law (Federal Court & Court Of Appeal Decisions)
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, the seminar featured Muhendaran Suppiah as the speaker. Held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, the session welcomed 33 participants for an engaging and insightful discussion.

Licensing And Commercialisation Of Intellectual Property Rights 
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Sri Sarguna Raj and Steven Cheok and moderated by Sukhdev Kaur. It was held from 2:30pm to 4:00pm via Zoom. 

The webinar delved into the strategic processes of licensing and commercialisation of Intellectual Property (“IP”) rights. The speakers explored the fundamentals of IP, the benefits and challenges of licensing, franchising, various commercialisation strategies, technology transfer and real-world case studies. The speakers also shared with participants potential methods to maximise the value of intellectual assets, navigate legal frameworks, and leverage IP for competitive advantage.

The webinar was attended by 84 participants.

Murder Trial 
Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this webinar was presented by Datuk N. Sivananthan and moderated by Jason Kong.

The webinar covered the following areas: -

(Ii) “Computation Of The Time Of Murder”;
(Iii) “Conflicting Opinion Evidence”;
(Iv) “Judicial Treatment Of Interested Witnesses”;

It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. The webinar was attended by 100 participants.
