Pupils Call Briefing
Organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee, the
briefings for the Pupils' Admission to the Bar for February 2025 were held at
the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium on: -
(i) 3 February 2025, from 11:00am to 12:00pm. The briefing was
conducted by Tay Kit Hoo and was attended by 77 pupils;
(ii) 7 February 2025, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. The briefing was
conducted by Tay Kit Hoo and was attended by 83 pupils;
(iii) 14 February 2025, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. The briefing was
conducted by Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 15 pupils; and
(iv) 21 February 2025, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. The briefing was
conducted by Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 26 pupils.

Value Creation By Transactional Lawyers: Lawyering In The
Disruptive AI And Technology Driven Era
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee,
this seminar was held on 6 February 2025 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the KL Bar
Auditorium. This seminar was presented by Jeff Leong and moderated by Wong Kar
Ling. We had 19 participants.

Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session, jointly organised by the Young
Lawyers & Pupils Committee and the Gender Equality & Diversity
Committee, was held on 7 February 2025 and 14 February 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur
Bar Auditorium. This event was conducted in two sessions to accommodate more
participants:
7 February 2025
(i) 1st session, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The session was conducted
by Tay Kit Hoo and was attended by 105 pupils; and
(ii) 2nd session, from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. The session was conducted
by Tay Kit Hoo, Brenda Rangithan & Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 103
pupils.
14 February 2025
(iii) 1st session, from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The session was
conducted by Tay Kit Hoo & Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 98 pupils; and
(iv) 2nd session, from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. The session was conducted
by Brenda Rangithan & Ooi Jia Liang and was attended by 79 pupils.
The primary purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to
familiarise pupils with the structure and roles of the Malaysian Bar and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar. The session covered key topics such as the elections to the
Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, as well as the highlights of
the Malaysian Barās initiatives. Participants were also provided a platform to
discuss challenges and issues encountered during their pupillage, fostering an
environment of shared learning and support.
A special segment titled āDiversity & Inclusion: Unconscious
Biasā, was another highlight of the event. This segment aimed to educate and
create awareness about the impact of unconscious biases and innate prejudices
on decision-making. The session emphasised how these biases could lead to
unintentional discrimination and hinder the development of effective diversity
and inclusion practices in the workplace.
The Pupils Introduction Session remains a cornerstone event,
equipping future legal professionals with crucial insights, fostering
meaningful discussions, and promoting the values of inclusivity and diversity
within the legal fraternity.

Boot Camp (Part 1): Litigation
Organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee, this
webinar was moderated by Ooi Jia Liang.
The event featured four sessions, with expert speakers covering
essential litigation skills for young lawyers and pupils:
(i) Session 1: Interviewing Clients, Getting-Up & Identification
of Issues from 9:00am to 10:30am was conducted by Anishaa Sundramoorthy
(ii) Session 2: Research Skills from 11:30am to 12:30pm was
conducted by Anson Liow
(iii) Session 3: How to Draft Pleadings and Interlocutory Applications from 2:00pm to 3:30pm was conducted by Aarthi Jeyarajah
(iv) Session 4: Basic CM & Oral Submission Skills from 4:00pm
to 5:30pm was conducted by Kee Hui Yee
It was held via Zoom from 9:00am to 5:30pm. We had 106
participants.

One Heart, One Purpose: Bringing Joy to Children
The One Heart, One Purpose: Bringing Joy to Children initiative,
organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee, successfully brought
smiles, laughter, and meaningful support to the underprivileged children at
Shelter Home for Children, Jalan Tinggi 6/12, Seksyen 6, Petaling Jaya.
Held from 9:30am to 11:00am, the event was filled with warmth and
generosity. Thanks to the incredible support from donors, we raised a total of
RM948 in contributions, ensuring that these children receive the care and
joy they deserve.
The overwhelming response from volunteers was truly heartwarming.
Their enthusiasm and dedication made the event extra special, creating a
fun-filled atmosphere through engaging activities. The children enjoyed a
coloring contest and indoor games, bringing festive cheer and excitement to
their day.

Organised by the Young Lawyers & Pupils Committee, this
webinar was conducted by Shashi Devan and moderated by Arthur Ng.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (āLAC KLā) Pupils
Orientation for Compulsory Legal Aid Duty Batch 121/2025
The orientation for pupils of Batch 121/2025 was held on 17
February 2025, from 9:00am to 5:30pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. The session
was facilitated by Morhaneraj Rajakumaran and Mohd Radzlan bin Jalaludin. A
total of 196 pupils attended the orientation.

Meeting With the Management of Taska Qistina (Child Care Centre)
Kuala Lumpur Court
The meeting was held on 18 February 2025 at 10:00am at Bilik
Anggerik, Level 6, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.
The KLBC was represented by Chairman Alvin Oh Seong Yew, Honorary
Secretary and CPCLC Co-Chairperson Nimalan Devaraja and Deputy Chairperson of
the CPCLC, Aarthi S. Jeyarajah.
The main agenda of the meeting was to further discuss our proposal
for a temporary playroom for children while their parents attend court
proceedings at the KMKL. The proposal to accommodate children of lawyers or
members of the public at Taska Qistina has been agreed by the Court.

Indonesian Citizens Legal Aid Scheme (I-CLAS) Training for
Volunteer Lawyers
Organised as part of the Indonesian Citizens Legal Aid Scheme
(I-CLAS) initiative, this training was held on 18 February 2025, from 10:00am
to 4:30pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. The session was facilitated by Collin
Arvind Andrew, Manimagalai a/p Gowindasamy, Nadra Fatima binti Mannan, and Teoh
Alvare. A total of 57 lawyers from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, along with 5
staff members, participated in the training.

LAC Kuala Lumpur Appreciation Dinner 2025
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (āLAC KLā), the
Appreciation Dinner 2025 was held on 20 February 2025, from 6:30pm
onwards at the Bar Council Auditorium. A total of 50 attendees were part of the
celebration, including Collin Arvind Andrew (Deputy Chairperson, National Legal
Aid and YBGK Committee), Alvin Oh Seong Yew (KL Bar Chairman), Nimalan Devaraja
(KL Bar Honorary Secretary,), Rajen Devaraj (CEO of the Malaysian Bar), the
entire Management Panel of LAC Kuala Lumpur, volunteer lawyers and all staff
members of LAC Kuala Lumpur.

Corporate Conference 2025
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee (āCCPCā), this conference
was held on 20 February 2025 at the AIAC Auditorium. Fatma Aliya Binti Ahmed
Ramzi was the emcee for the conference. The welcome speech was delivered by the
Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, Alvin Oh Seong Yew.
There were five sessions at the conference:-
(i) Session 1 entitled āEnvironmental, Social and Governance
(ESG)ā from 9:35am to 10:50am. This session was presented by Muhammad Zuhair
bin Hamedi and Oliver Kumaran and moderated by Abhilaash Subramaniam.
(ii) Session 2 entitled āCapital Gains Taxā from 11:00am to
12:15pm. This session was sponsored by Wong & Partners and was presented by
Mohamad Harzani Bin Tahir and Desmond Liew Zhi Hong and moderated by Jeff Sum
Wai Loon.
(iii) Session 3 entitled āBeneficial Ownership Reporting
Guidelinesā from 12:15pm to 1:00pm. This session was presented by Khairani M
Yusof and Samantha Tai Yit Chan and moderated by Chan Xian Ai.
(iv) Session 4 entitled āWhite Collar Fraudā from 2:00pm to
3:15pm. This session was sponsored by Haeme and was presented by Wong Kar Ling,
Jeremiah Rais bin Badrul Hisham and Oo Yang Ping and moderated by Rachel Tey
Mei Yee.
(v)Session 5 entitled āCrypto Digital Assets/ Bitcoinā from 3:15pm
to 4:30pm. This session was sponsored by Gan, Lee & Tan and was presented
by Gan Ming Chiek, Scarlett Chai and Derrick Leong and moderated by Muhammad
Nurhadi bin Zainol.
The conference concluded with a closing speech from the
Co-Chairperson of the CCPC, Vivekananda Sukumaran. We had 83 in-person
participants and 34 online participants.

KL Bar Appreciation Dinner
An Appreciation Dinner was held on 21 February 2025 at Precious Old China, Central Market, for all members and non-members of the Bar who had selflessly sacrificed their time for the Kuala Lumpur Bar over the past term. These volunteers have contributed by giving lectures, conducting or moderating seminars/workshops, representing the KLBC at hearings of Admissions to the Bar, sitting in sub-committees and rendering any other form of assistance to the Kuala Lumpur Bar.

Courtesy Visit to the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court
Organised as part of the engagement initiatives with the Syariah
Court, this meeting was held on Friday, 21 February 2025, from 9:45am to
11:30am at the Kuala Lumpur Syariah Court. The meeting was attended by
Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, Chairperson of the Kuala Lumpur Legal Aid Center and
Zulsyahmi Husaini bin Kamarulzaman, Project Head for Syariah Committee. From
the courtās side, YAA Tuan Haji Mohd Asri Bin Haji Tahir, Chief Syarie Judge of
MSWP attended together with Ybrs. Tuan Ahmad Basyir bin Yaakob, Chief Registrar
of MSWP and Tuan Mohd Amir bin Haji Ariffin @ Mohd Rifin ā Registrar, Mahkamah
Syariah Wilayah Persekutuan were present. Also in attendance from the Legal Aid
Centre (āLACā)
secretariat were Sumitra Veeriah, Jeevanathan Angappan, and Nadiah Abdul Rahim.
The discussion focused on the potential pupilsā programme, the establishment of
a booth at the Syariah Court, and strengthening the Syariah programme.

GEDC Conference 2025: Innovation Through Inclusion
On 22 February 2025, the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee
(GEDC) Conference 2025: Innovation Through Inclusion brought together legal
professionals, activists, and students at the KL Bar Auditorium for a
thought-provoking and impactful discussion on diversity, equity, and inclusion
in the legal profession.
From 8:30am to 2:00pm, attendees engaged in panel discussions,
interactive dialogues, and networking sessions, all aimed at driving meaningful
change within the industry.
Highlights from the conference:
Panel 1: It Starts with Us ā Towards an Even More Diverse, Equal,
and Progressive Bar
Moderated by Arinah Najwa, with speakers Abang Iwawan, Marisa
Regina, and Daniella Zulkifili.

The conference concluded with a networking lunch, where
participants continued the conversation and built meaningful connections.

total of 162 pupils attended the orientation.

33rd Annual General Meeting Of The Kuala Lumpur Bar
This yearās Annual General Meeting was held at the Banquet Hall, Level 2, Royal Lake Club, Taman Tasek Perdana, Jalan Cenderamulia. 1480 members attended the said AGM. The Office-Bearers of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee for 2025/2026 elected at the AGM were: Chairman ā Nimalan Devaraja; Committee members ā Rajsurian Pillai, Jeremiah Rais Bin Badrul Hisham, Brenda Rangithan, Ooi Jia Liang, Aarthi a/p S. Jeyarajah, Shugan Raman, Tay Kit Hoo, Sarah Yee Chyi Cheng, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran and Michelle Siah Yi Yen. Alvin Oh Seong Yew was elected as the KL Barās Representative to the Bar Council. It was also confirmed at the AGM that the subscription for the year 2025 was to remain at RM125.00 per member.
