Pupils Introduction And Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in February 2024 was held on 5 February 2024
from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Weera
Premananda, the session was attended by 89 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils
Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
includes a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered
during their pupillage period.
Also included in the Pupils Introduction Session is a session on “Diversity
& Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and
create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to
poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional
discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices
in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Brenda Rangithan the
Co-Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee.

How To Read A DNA Report: A Practical Exercise For Criminal Trials
Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this seminar was conducted by
Shamsul Sulaiman at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:00pm to 5:15pm.
Participants were given a DNA report from an actual trial to analyse and asked
to prepare for cross-examination of the expert. The seminar was attended by 27
participants.
Lemon Law
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was conducted by Wan Nur Addibah Binti Adnan and Lahveenya a/p Panchalingam and moderated by Edel a/p Siva Sanker.
The webinar covered the following areas:-
(i)"Introduction:
What is Lemon Law?, Who does Lemon Law concern or affect? and Where are we
(Malaysia) at and why is it relevant today?";
(ii)"Why is it important to implement/review the current status of Lemon
Law in Malaysia?";
(iii) "How do we compare with other Jurisdictions? Singapore, United
States of America and Australia."; and
(iv)"What should be done next".
It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 38 participants.
Awareness Session on Sexual Harassment in the Workspace and Bar Council’s Peer Support Network
Organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, this webinar was conducted by Saraswathi Ravindran (Principal Industrial Relations Consultant at Malaysian Employers Federation) and Harleen Kaur (Chair of the Malaysian Bar's Peer Support Network Committee) and moderated by Tay Kit Hoo. It was held via Zoom from 10:00am to 12:00pm. We had 27 participants. This webinar raised awareness about sexual harassment in the workplace and the peer support network for those who are currently experiencing the same.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC KL”) Pupils Orientation for Compulsory Legal Aid Duty Batch 117/2024
The orientation for pupils of Batch 117/2024 was facilitated by Morhaneraj a/l Rajakumaran & Kenneth Koh on 19 February 2024 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. A total of 296 pupils attended the orientation.
The Basics Of Judicial Review For Pupils And Young Lawyers
Organised by the Pupils Committee, this webinar was conducted by Kee Hui Yee and moderated by Aina Zulaikha Bt Ahmad Zaki. The webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 46 participants.
KL Bar Appreciation Dinner
An Appreciation Dinner was held on 23 February 2024 at Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse at Central Market Annexe, for all members and non-members of the Bar who have selflessly sacrificed their time for the Kuala Lumpur Bar over the past term. These volunteers have contributed by giving lectures, conducting or moderating seminars/workshops, representing the KLBC at hearings of Admissions to the Bar, sitting in sub-committees and rendering any other form of assistance to the Kuala Lumpur Bar.
Screening and Q&A - MARYAM
Co-organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, and Malaysian Centre For Constitutionalism And Human Rights, this event was conducted by Badrul Hisham, Rozana Isa and Khaizan Sharizad, and was moderated by Tay Kit Hoo. It was held at the KL Bar Auditorium from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. We had 40 participants.
The
objectives of the screening was to create awareness about the critical social
issues addressed in the film that plague Malaysian women and society, for
example, the struggles women face in navigating the Syariah bureaucracy system.
expose participants to the diverse perspectives and experiences portrayed in
the film to foster understanding of challenging perspectives, to encourage
participants to examine their own beliefs and biases critically, and to create
a space where members of the legal fraternity and CSOs can come together to
discuss sensitive topics in a respectful and inclusive manner.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this webinar was conducted by Wong Tat Chung and was moderated by Alicia Ng Chui Ling. It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 77 participants.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Seminar was conducted
by Renganathan Kannan.
The Seminar covered the following areas:-
(i) Overview of Capital Gains Taxes,
e-invoicing & Special Voluntary Disclosure Program 2.0.;
(ii) Discussion on Risk Analysis & Impact for Taxpayers who participates in
other Voluntary Disclosure Programs; and
(iiii) Documentation for future tax compliance/audits.
The Seminar was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
We had 50 participants.

Organised by the Pupils Committee, this webinar was conducted by Tishondra Puspanathan and moderated by Aina Zulaikha Bt Ahmad Zaki. The webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 45 participants.

32nd Annual General Meeting Of The Kuala Lumpur Bar
This year’s Annual General Meeting was held at the Banquet Hall, Level 2, Royal
Lake Club, Taman Tasek Perdana, Jalan Cenderamulia. 676 members attended the
said AGM. The Office-Bearers of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee for 2023/24
elected at the AGM were: Chairman – Alvin Oh Seong Yew; Committee members –
Nimalan Devaraja, S. Saravana Kumar, Brenda Rangithan, Thulasy Suppiah,
Rajsurian Pillai, Tay Kit Hoo, Shugan Raman, Sathya Sinnappan, Ooi Jia Liang
and Morhaneraj Rajakumar. Vivekananda Sukumaran was elected as the KL Bar’s
Representative to the Bar Council. It was also confirmed at the AGM that the
subscription for the year 2024 was to remain at RM125.00 per member.
