Pupils Admission To The Bar Briefing

The Pupils Admission to the Bar Briefing in January 2024 was held via Zoom on 2 January 2024, from 10:00am to 11:30am, with 117 pupils attending the briefing, and on 29 January 2024, from 10:00am to 11:20am, with 71 pupils attending the briefing. Both briefings were conducted by Weera Premananda.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Seminar was conducted by Jeremiah R. Gurusamy. It was held at Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 26 participants

LAC Kuala Lumpur Appreciation Dinner 2023

The Appreciation Dinner 2023 organised by The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) was held on 12 January 2024 at Cosmo Hotel, Kuala Lumpur from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. A total of 50 attendees were part of the celebration which included Anand Raj a/l Balasupramaniam (Secretary, Bar Council), Dato’ Abdul Fareed bin Abdul Gafoor (Co-Chairperson, National Legal Aid and YBGK Committee), Roshalizawati binti Muhammad (Co-Chairperson, National Legal Aid and YBGK Committee), the entire Management Panel of LAC Kuala Lumpur, all the staff members of LAC Kuala Lumpur and the volunteer lawyers.

Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session

The Pupils Introduction Session in January 2024 was held on 15 January 2024 from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Weera Premananda, the session was attended by 89 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Tay Kit Hoo Co-Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Seminar was conducted by Pekka Dare and was moderated by Thulasy Suppiah. It was held at Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 33 participants.

Appellate Advocacy: Best Practices And Golden Rules To Be A Persuasive Advocate

Organised by the Civil Practice & Court Liaison Committee, this webinar was presented by Justice Datuk S.Nantha Balan, Robert Lazar, and Dato’ Malik Imtiaz Sarwar and moderated by Charlaine Adrienne Chin. It was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 387 participants.

KL Bar Run 2024

The 8th KL Bar Run was on 21 January 2024 (Sunday), at Kepong Metropolitan Park, Kuala Lumpur. The run was flagged off at 7:20am by the Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Bar, Alvin Oh Seong Yew.

The 8th KL Bar Run was also held in collaboration with Care2Run, a sports mentoring program for youths aged 8-18 years with a special focus on children with higher learning needs who come from different social and economic backgrounds.

A record-breaking total of 301 teams, comprising 1204 runners, participated in the 8th KL Bar Run. Members of the Judiciary also participated in a KL Bar Run. Click here to view the photos.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) Pupil’s Midterm Review Batch 116/2023

The Mid Term Review (“MTR”) for Batch 116/2023 was conducted by the respective Project Heads. Pupils are given the opportunity during the MTR to raise issues and express their suggestions to improve the programs for the next 7 weeks. The MTR for these programs were conducted physically. The representatives from the respective NGO partners also participated in the MTR to give their feedback.

Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students – SMK Kepong Baru, KL

The legal awareness campaign organised by The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) is designed for school students with the aim to educate them about Malaysian laws and how these laws may impact them in the event of any wrongdoing. The outreach session took place at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Kepong Baru from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. There were various crucial topics covered during this session including bullying, driving or riding without a license, sexual harassment, vaping and smoking, snatch theft and bringing alcohol to school. The speaker for this session was Morhaneraj Rajakumaran with assistance from volunteer lawyers Hoong Li Kee and Kalpana a/p Selvakumaran
