Competition 2023
Co-organised by the Young Lawyers Committee and the Lincoln’s Inn Alumni
Association of Malaysia, the Moot Court Competition 2023
("Competition") was held at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex on 2
and 3 December 2023. There were a total of 39 hearings (33 hearings in the
preliminary rounds, 4 semi-finals hearings and 2 final hearings) carried out
involving a total of 32 teams (21 teams from Category A and 11 teams from
Category B).

Refugees and Asylum Seekers Legal Aid Scheme (RALAS) Outreach
Organised by the RALAS Committee, this outreach event was held on 2 December
2023 at the Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC KL”) Training Room,
Level 3 Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There were 25
participants for this outreach session from the Yemen, Syria and Sudan
communities. The speakers included Kailash a/l Kalaiarasu, Sharmini a/p
Palaniandy, Melissa Chua Su Lynn, Joanne Hee Pik Yee and Nooradila binti Abdull
Aziz.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers Legal Aid Scheme (RALAS) Outreach
Organised by the RALAS Committee, this outreach event was held on 3 December
2023 at the Afghanistan Community Centre Ampang, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There
were 22 participants for this outreach session from Afghanistan community. The
speakers included Melissa Chua Su Lynn, Nooradila Binti Abdull Aziz, Sharmini
a/p Palaniandy, and Lionel Navin Loel.

Appellate Advocacy: Perspectives From the Bench
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Seminar was conducted
on 5 December 2023 by retired Judge Datuk Vernon Ong and was moderated by S.
Saravana Kumar. It was held at Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to
4:30pm. We had 46 participants.
KL Bar Blood Donation Campaign
Organised by Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, with the assistance of the National Blood Bank, the campaign was held at Level 1, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur on 6 December 2023. Members of the Bar as well as Court staff and members of the public came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Campaign. 66 donors registered, 46 donated and 22 were unsuccessful.

Divorce And Parental Alienation
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was conducted on 8 December 2023 by Kasthuri Krishnan and was moderated by Chan Edwin Tomas Junior. It was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 57 participants.
An Introduction to SLAPP (“Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation”) - A restriction to Freedom of Expression?
Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar was presented on 11 December 2023 by Jessica Ram Binwani and M. Sarguna Kumaari. It was held via Zoom meeting from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. We had 13 participants.
LAC Pupil’s Training Batch 116/2023
Organised by the Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), the LAC Pupils’ Programs training for Batch 116/2023 was conducted from 11 to 15 December 2023. The training sessions for these programs were conducted physically at the Bar Council Auditorium and LAC KL training room. The trainers were Morhaneraj a/l Rajakumaran, Narandra a/l Kangatharan, Selvaraja a/l Chinniah, Teoh Alvare, Abd Shukor Tokachil , Selva Balan Sinnan, Sumitra Devi, Zulsyahmi Husaini bin Kamarulzaman and the representatives from the respective NGO Partners.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was conducted on 12 December 2023 by Muhendaran Suppiah. It was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 15 participants.
Expert Evidence In Arbitration
Co-organised by the Professional Development Committee and the Asian International Arbitration Centre (“AIAC”), this Seminar was conducted on 12 December 2023 by Saravana Kumar, Adrian Dobbie-Holman, Kelvin Ng and Dr. S. Nadarajah. It was held at the AIAC from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 90 participants.

Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students – SMK Tinggi Setapak, Kuala Lumpur
The legal awareness campaign organised by The Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) is designed for school students with the aim to educate them about Malaysian laws and how these laws may impact them in the event of any wrongdoing. The outreach session under this legal awareness campaign took place on 13 December 2023 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Tinggi Setapak, Kuala Lumpur from 11:30am to 1:00pm. There were various crucial topics covered during this session including bullying, driving or riding without a license, sexual harassment, vaping and smoking, and bringing alcohol to school. The speaker for this session was Morhaneraj a/l Rajakumaran who was assisted by pupils in chambers Reuben Choong Bi Qian and Kuat Wen Fang.

The outreach session under this legal awareness campaign took place at Sekolah

2023 from 8:45am to 10:15am. There were various crucial topics covered during
this session including bullying, driving or riding without a license, sexual
harassment, vaping and smoking, and bringing alcohol to school. The speaker for
this session was Shashi Devan a/l Thalmalingam who was assisted by pupils in
chambers Lee An Chi and Navina Ramani.

Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in December 2023 was held on 18 December 2023
from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium. Led by Weera
Premananda, the session was attended by 90 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils
Introduction Session was to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered
during their pupillage period.
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on
“Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to
educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate
prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result
in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity &
inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by
Brenda Rangithan and Tay Kit Hoo Co-Chairpersons of the Gender Equality &
Diversity Committee.

Meeting with Inland Revenue Board Of Malaysia (“LHDNM”)
The meeting was held on Wednesday, 20 December 2023 at 9:30am at LHDNM Headquarters. The Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee was represented by its Chairperson, Alden Yeoh Shuen Chun, Co-Deputy Chairperson, Richard Teh and committee members, Olivia Ow Hui Ching and Kong Yin Yin.
Among the issues discussed were problems faced by practitioners specifically, delays in the adjudication process, difficulties of entering and saving data on the online portal and other related issues.
Role & Duties Of Private Liquidators In A Winding Up
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this webinar was conducted on 21 December 2023 by Mavinthra Jothy a/l Thillainathan and was moderated by Sundaradevan Ramachandaran. It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 121 participants.
