Meeting with Tuan Amrin bin Ramli
The meeting between the Assistant Director of the Management Services Section,
of the Federal Court of Malaysia and The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala
Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) was held on Wednesday, 1 November 2023 at 3:00pm at
the Management Discussion Room, Level 3, Palace of Justice. The LAC KL was
represented by the LAC KL Assistant Honorary Secretary Narandra Kangatharan.
The purpose of the meeting was to distribute
Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (“YBGK”) posters for placement around
the Putrajaya Magistrate and Sessions Court to raise awareness among the public
about the availability of YBGK assistance for individuals in need of legal
representation.

KOPI O NIGHT - Exploring Malaysia's Abolishment of the Death Penalty
The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”), organised a “Kopi
O Night”, at LAC KL Training Room. It was held on 2 November 2023 at 6:30pm
to 9:30pm and was attended by 42 participants. The distinguished speakers were
Neetika Vishwanath and Shreya Rastogi from Project 39A, National Law University
Delhi, Tim Marsh from the Victorian Bar, Melbourne, and Sarah Belal, Founder,
and Executive Director of Justice Project Pakistan (“JPP”). The event
was moderated by Shashi Devan Thalmalingam and the discussion was on "Life
Over Death: Exploring Malaysia's Recent Abolishment of the Death Penalty."
The informal setting allowed active participation, and positive feedback
highlighted the engaging discussions.

8th KL Bar Futsal Competition 2023
The 8th KL Bar Futsal held on November 4, 2023 (Saturday) at World Of Futsal
(Subang Jaya) Sdn Bhd, Lot 61711, Jalan TS 6/4, Taman Perindustrian Subang,
47500 Subang Jaya. A total of 19 teams (16 men’s teams, 3 women’s team)
participated in the event and the results were as follows:

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) Pupil’s Midterm Review Batch 115/2023
The Mid Term Review (“MTR”) for Batch 115/2023 was conducted by the respective Project Heads. Pupils are given the opportunity to raise issues and express their suggestions to improve the programs for the next 7 weeks. The MTR for these programs were conducted physically. The representatives from the respective NGO partners also participated in the MTR to give their feedback.

Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students – SMK Menjalara
The legal awareness campaign organised by The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre
(Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC KL”) is designed for school students with the aim
to educate them about Malaysian laws and how these laws may impact them in the
event of any wrongdoing. The first outreach session took place at Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Menjalara from 11:00am to 3:00pm. There
were various crucial topics covered during this session including bullying,
driving or riding without a license, sexual harassment, vaping and smoking,
snatch theft and bringing alcohol to school. The speakers for this session were
the LAC KL Honorary Secretary, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran and Chan Edwin Tomas
Junior, with assistance from pupils Callum Yeow Ker Ken, Lim Chaw Zen, and
Loong Shi Yi.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this webinar was conducted
by Wan Hilwanie and was moderated by Sukhdev Kaur a/p Daliph Singh. It was held
via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 49 participants.
Meeting With YA Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan
The Meeting between the Managing Judge of Commercial High Courts and Civil Subordinate Courts and Civil Practice & Court Liaison Committee (“CPCLC”) was held on Wednesday, 8 November 2023 at 3:00pm at the Judge’s chambers .The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee was represented by the KLBC Chairman, Alvin Oh Seong Yew, Honourary Secretary and Co-Chairperson of CPCLC, Nimalan Devaraja, Co-Chairperson of CPCLC, Shugan Raman, Co-deputy Chairperson of the CPCLC, Grace Teng Peck Yin and Aarthi S. Jeyarajah.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss issues and present possible solutions to the same concerning the administration of the Commercial High Courts in the Kuala Lumpur Courts. We also received feedback from the Managing Judge on issues faced by the Commercial Court Judges in respect of lawyers.

The Orientation for pupils of Batch 116/2023 was conducted by Kenneth Koh on 10 November 2023 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Bar Council Auditorium. 110 pupils attended the said orientation.

Pupils Introduction And Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in November 2023 was held on 20 November 2023
Physical from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Led by Weera Premananda, the session was
attended by 91 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to
introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur
Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee,
and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to
discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on
“Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to
educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate
prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result
in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity &
inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by
Brenda Rangithan Co-Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity
Committee.
Legal Awareness Campaign for School Students - SMK Raja Abdullah
The second outreach session under this legal awareness campaign took place at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (“SMK”) Raja Abdullah on 20 November 2023 from 2:10pm to 3:05pm. The speaker for this session was Ravin Singh with assistance from pupils Hor Yuh Long and Nur Farrisyah Aqilla Binti Mohammad Ramdhan.

Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) Training for Lawyers (Part 1&2)
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) ("LAC"), Parts 1 & 2 of the YBGK training, were held physically at the Bar Council Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia was held on 21 November 2023. The training focused on the YBGK administration and the procedures for Arrest, Remand, Bail and Mitigation. It was conducted by the LAC KL Honorary Secretary, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran and Shashi Devan Thalmalingam from 9:00am to 6:00pm. 16 lawyers attended the training.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers Legal Aid Scheme (RALAS) Outreach
Organised by the RALAS Committee, this outreach event was held on 25 November 2023 at Rainbow of love school, No 14 Jalan 4 Selayang Baru, 68100 Batu Caves, Selangor from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There were 51 participants for this outreach session from Rohingya communities. The speakers included Melissa Chua Su Lynn, Nooradila Binti Abdull Aziz, Purshotaman Puvanendran, Sharmini Palaniandy and Joanne Hee Pik Yee.
