LAC Pupil’s Training Batch 115
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“LAC”),
the training session for the LAC Pupils’ Program for Batch 115/2023 was
conducted from 4 to 12 September 2023. The training sessions for the Program
were conducted physically at the Bar Council Auditorium and LAC training room.
The trainers were Morhaneraj a/l Rajakumaran, Selvaraja a/l Chinniah, Parvin
Kaur, Ahmad Nazri, Balan, Sumitra Devi, Narandra, and the representatives from
the respective NGO Partners.

Reference Proceedings
A Reference Proceedings was held for 24 departed members of the Kuala Lumpur
Bar on Tuesday, 5 September 2023 at 9:00am and 11:00am and Wednesday, 6
September 2023 at 9:00am. Presided by YA Dato’ Ahmad Kamal Bin Md. Shahid, the

Pupils Call Briefing
The Pupils Admission to the Bar Briefing in September was held via Zoom from
10:00am to 11:30am. The briefing was led by Weera Premananda and 163 pupils
attended.

Meeting between the Managing Judge, Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia,
Royale Malaysian Police and KLBC Criminal Law Practice Committee
The meeting was held on Thursday, 7 September 2023 at 2:30pm at Bilik Anggerik,
Level 6, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee was
represented by the KLBC Chairman, Alvin Oh Seong Yew, Honourary Secretary,
Nimalan Devaraja, KLBC CLPC Chairperson, Rajsurian, Chairperson of the Bar
Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur, Terrence Lee Rohui, the Executive
Director of the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur, Sumitra Veeriah, and
Executive Officer and Officer of the Kuala Lumpur Bar committee Noratikah
Shaharudin and Joanne Savaria.
The issues discussed during the meeting concerned the conducting of criminal
cases in the Kuala Lumpur Court.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Seminar was conducted
by Sitpah Selvaratnam and was moderated by Thulasy Suppiah. It was held at
Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. We had 15 participants.

Pupils Introduction And Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in September 2023 was held on 11 September 2023
from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Led by Weera Premananda, the session was attended by 93
pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to introduce pupils
to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to
both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of
the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to discuss issues and
problems they encountered during their pupillage period.
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on
“Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to
educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices
lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in
unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity &
inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Tay
Kit Hoo and Brenda Rangithan Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity
Committee.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this webinar was conducted
by Rajsurian Pillai and was moderated by Chan Edwin Tomas Junior. It was held
via Zoom from 2:30pm to 5:00pm. We had 52 participants.

Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this webinar
was presented by Cassandra Nicole Thomazios and moderated by Irene Tan Ean
Chieen. It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 124 participants.

the exit evaluation for Batch 114/2023 was conducted by Kenneth Koh, Joachim
Xavier and Morhaneraj from 9:00am to 5:00pm. It was held at the Bar Council
Auditorium, Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia.

by Muhendaran Suppiah and was moderated by Chan Edwin Tomas Junior. It was held
via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. We had 64 participants.

Basic Conveyancing Practice Workshop
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this workshop
was held from 19 to 21 September 2023 via Zoom. The 2:00pm to 4:00pm session on
19 September was presented by Donny Kwa Soo Chuan and moderated by Chan Edwin
Tomas Junior and the 4:10pm to 6:10pm session was presented by Teo Kui Cheng
and moderated by Sukhdev Kaur.
There were four
sessions on 20 September 2023 – the first and second sessions from 2:00pm to
4:00pm was presented by R. Yogeswari, the third session from 4:10pm to 5:10pm
was presented by Sarah Kambali. The last session from 5:10pm to 6:10pm was
presented by Chong Wai Kuan and all the sessions were moderated by Richard Teh.
The session on 21 September 2021, held from 4:10pm to 6:10pm, was presented by
Susan Joseph and moderated by Irene Tan Ean Chieen. We had 64 participants.

Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK) Training for Lawyers (Part 1&2)
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) ("LAC"),
Parts 1 & 2 of the YBGK training, were held at the Bar Council Auditorium,
Level 2, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia on 19 September 2023. The training focused
on the YBGK administration and the procedures for Arrest, Remand, Bail and
Mitigation. It was conducted by Rajsurian Pillai and Shashi Devan from 9:00am
to 6:00pm. 27 lawyers attended the training.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers Legal Aid Scheme (RALAS) Outreach
Organised by the RALAS Committee, this outreach event was held on 23 September
2023 at Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Sri Raya, Ampang Selangor, from 9:00am to
4:00pm. There were 31 participants for this outreach session from the Rohingya
communities. The speakers included Melissa Chua Su Lynn, Morhaneraj, Teoh
Alvare, Nooradila Binti Abdull Aziz, Joanne Hee Pik Yee.

Miki Goh Cup 2023
The Kuala Lumpur Bar in collaboration with the Penang Bar hosted the inaugural
Miki Goh Cup (“MGC”) on 23 September 2023 in Penang. The MGC was an
All-Women’s Tournament, held in commemoration of the late Wembley Alexandra Goh
(popularly known as Miki Goh) in reflection of all strong and ambitious women
then, now and in the making.
The Kuala Lumpur Bar emerged as the overall winner in this series. The Cup was
presented by Honey Tan to the Kuala Lumpur Bar Chairman Alvin Oh Seong Yew
during the event’s dinner. The dinner was held at Black Kettle, Penang and was
well attended by the participants from both Bars.
