KLBC Activities Report For July 2023

National Legal Aid and Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (NLA & YBGK) Committee State Visit
The Bar Council NLA & YBGK Committee visited Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur (“LAC”) for a sharing session to gather feedback on the issues the volunteer lawyers face on the ground and to discuss other matters concerning these lawyers. This session was held on 5 July 2023 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm and attended by Karen Cheah Yee Lynn (President, Malaysian Bar), Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab (Vice President, Malaysian Bar), Murshidah Mustafa (Treasurer, Malaysian Bar), Rajen Devaraj (CEO, Bar Council), Sunil Lopez (Deputy CEO, Bar Council), Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor (Co-Chairperson, NLA & YBGK Committee), LAC representatives (Terrence Lee Rohui, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, Narandra Kangatharan, Sumitra Veeriah, Jeevanathan Angappan, Low Foong Yee) and 15 volunteer lawyers.

YLC Wellness: Barre Class
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, this Legal Barre: Balancing The Scales Of Fitness & Fun was held as a hybrid on 6 July 2023 at Rebarre Studio, Bangsar and via Zoom. It was held from 6:45pm to 8:00pm and was attended by 10 participants.

ATC Legal Careers Fair 2023
Organised by ATC Law School, LAC opened a booth to promote the services provided by LAC to public. It was held at ATC (KL) from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. LAC representatives were Parvin Kaur, Jeevanathan and 3 volunteer pupils.

Pupils Admission To The Bar Briefing
The Pupils Admission to the Bar Briefing in July was held at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 10:00am to 11:30am. The briefing was led by Weera Premananda and 68 pupils attended.

Pupils Introduction and Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in July was held on 17 July 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Bar Auditorium from 2:30pm to 5:45pm. Led by Weera Premananda, the session was attended by 86 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee, and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for students to discuss issues and problems they encountered during their pupillage period.

Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious biases and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment and poor decision-making, which in turn result in unintentional discrimination and overall poor "diversity & inclusion" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Brenda Rangithan Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee.

Organised by the Criminal Law Practice Committee, this webinar was held on 27 July 2023 and was presented by Collin Arvind Andrew and moderated by Aiswarya Devi Chanthirakumar. It was held via Zoom from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We had 101 participants.

The Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (“ADPAN”)

Anti Death Penalty Asia Network (ADPAN) is an organisation that advocates for the abolishment of the death penalty in Malaysia. A meeting was held between LAC KL and ADPAN to discuss the possibility of conducting a training session for lawyers based in Kuala Lumpur on the recent abolishment of the mandatory death penalty for some serious crimes that do not cause death, such as kidnapping and the discharging and trafficking of firearms. The meeting was held on 27 July 2023 at the LAC KL conference room from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. It was attended by Dobby Chew and Sky Siaw from ADPAN along with Terrence Lee Rohui, Morhaneraj Rajakumaran, Narandra Kangatharan and Sumitra Veeriah on behalf of LAC KL.

Refugees And Asylum Seekers Legal Aid Scheme (RALAS) Outreach With Community

Organised by the RALAS Committee, an outreach event was held on 29 July 2023 at Senthang Christian Fellowship, Malaysia, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The speakers included Terrence Lee, Morhaneraj, Nur Khalish Anis Afina, Nooradila Binti Abdul Aziz, and Audrey Hoh, Sharmini Palaniandy. We had 41 participants from the community.

7TH KUALA LUMPUR BAR POOL OPEN 2023 – 8-BALL DOUBLES

Organised by the Sports Committee, this tournament was held at Cuesports by Donnis Sports, 10, Jalan PJS 11/20, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Petaling Jaya, Selangor. 13 teams, 2 being mixed doubles participated in the tournament. The competition was very friendly and was played in good spirits. The results were as follows:
