KLBC Activities Report For November 2022

1 to 7 November 2022
BCLACKL Pupil’s Midterm Review Batch 111/2022
Organised by the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) (“BCLACKL”), the Mid Term Review (MTR) for Batch 111/2022 was conducted by the respective project heads. Pupils are given the opportunity to raise issues and express suggestions to improve the programs for the next 7 weeks. The MTR for these programs were conducted physically and via Zoom. The representatives from the respective NGO partners also participated in the MTR to give their feedback.

Women In Leadership: The Unseen Barriers & Rising Above Them
Organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, this Seminar was held at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Sapphire Room from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The speakers were Anne Rajasaikaran, Freda Liu and Suriani Kempe. The event was moderated by Thulasy Suppiah and emceed by Vilasini Vijandran. We had a total of 60 participants, 10 more than the initial maximum allotted for the session.

YLC Wellness: Hiking @ Bukit Gasing
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee we had 51 participants joining the Hike.

4th Kuala Lumpur Bar V Malacca Bar Games 2022 
The 4th series between Kuala Lumpur Bar and Malacca Bar for R. Ponnudurai Challenge Trophy was held at Kuala Lumpur on 5 November 2022 with KL Bar playing host this year. The costs will be borne equally by both State Bar Committees.

Four sports were played namely Badminton, Men’s Futsal, Ladies Futsal, and Darts.
 
The Kuala Lumpur Bar emerged as the overall winner in this series-winning.

KL Bar & Lincoln's Inn Alumni Association of Malaysia | Moot Court Competition 2022
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee the competition was held at Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. 15 teams signed up for the competition and they were from Universiti Teknologi Mara (2 Teams), Universiti Utara Malaysia (2 Teams), Multimedia University,  National University Of Malaysia, Advance Tertiary College, University Of Malaya (2 Teams), Taylors University (2 Teams), Brickfields Asia College ( 2 Teams), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin and Segi College Sarawak.

Pupils Introduction And Diversity & Inclusion Session
The Pupils Introduction Session in November was held online via Zoom from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. Led by Weera Premananda, the session was attended by 75 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session was to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period.
 
Also included in the said Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion: Unconscious Bias”. The aim of this segment is to educate and create awareness about how our unconscious bias(es) and innate prejudices lead to poor judgment, poor decision-making and in turn result in unintentional discrimination leading to overall poor "diversity & inclusivity" practices in our workplaces. The session was conducted by Thulasy Suppiah, Chairperson of the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee.

Further Discussions With The eCourt Division And Omesti Regarding Issues Of Filing PDF Documents With Annotations
The meeting was organised by the eCourt Division. It was held at 2:30pm via Zoom Meeting. Issues regarding PDF documents prepared using the Nitro software that contained annotations were discussed.
 
The eCourt Division was presented by Tuan Zulkifli Bin Abllah, Puan Norhanum Binti Hassan, Nur Aqilah Auni Najlaa Binti Aiyub. Also present at the meeting were three representatives from the Omesti.
 
The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee was represented by the Civil Practice & Court Liaison Committee Co-Chairpersons Nimalan Devaraja and Lim Yin Faye and members Nizam Bashir and Kee Hui Yee.

Organised by the Gender Equality & Diversity Committee, this webinar was held via Zoom from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.  The speakers were Suriani Kempe and Adlyn Adam Teoh.  The event was moderated by Vilasini Vijandran. We had 118 participants.

KL Bar Blood Donation Campaign
On 23 November 2022, the Social Arts & Culture Committee with the assistance of the National Blood Bank organised a Blood Donation Drive at Level 1, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. Members of the Bar as well as Court staff and members of the public came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive. 66 donors registered, 53 donated and 13 were unsuccessful.
