Visit To Pertubuhan Kebajikan Lao Yin Kah
Co-organised
by the Young Lawyers Committee and the University of Hull Alumni Association
Malaysia, this Chinese New Year get-together was held at Pertubuhan Kebajikan
Lao Yin Kah in Kepong at 10:00 am. RM5,310.75 was collected from Members of the
Bar which was allocated towards donation, ang pao and gifts for the residents,
as well as groceries for the home.

Proceedings In Family Matters
Organised by
the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Matt Wong
Chong Ee at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The speaker gave an
overview of committal proceedings and highlighted common pitfalls to avoid.The seminar
was attended by 60 participants.

Meeting With
The Director Of The Kuala Lumpur Courts
This meeting
between the Civil Practice & Court Liaison Committee (CPCLC) and the
Director of the Kuala Lumpur Courts and the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the
Kuala Lumpur Court was held at 3:00 pm at Bilik Anggerik, Level 6, Kuala Lumpur
Court Complex. CPCLC and the
Courts exchanged feedback regarding the administration of the courts and
officers and the practice of law. CPCLC was represented at the meeting by its
Co-Chairpersons, Harleen Kaur (Leena) and Nizam Bashir and two members, Matt
Wong Chong Ee and Syafinaz Vani.

Seminar On Basic
Aviation Law
Organised by
the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee, this seminar was presented
by Sarguna Kumaari at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar
was attended by 32 participants and covered, amongst other areas, “Public and
Private International Air Law”; “Organisations in Aviation”; “Malaysian
Perspective”; and “”Consumer Protection Laws”.

6th KL Bar
Run 2020
The 6th KL Bar Run was successfully held on Sunday,
16 February 2020 at the Lake Gardens. A record breaking of 222 teams with 888
runners participated in the said Run.
KL Bar Run collaborated with Care2Run which sent
eight teams to participate in the Run. Care2Run is a sports mentoring programme
for youths aged 8-18 years with special focus on children with higher learning
needs who come from different social economic backgrounds
The Run was flagged off at 7:00 am by the Chairman
of the Kuala Lumpur Bar, Harleen Kaur (Leena).

Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing
Practice Committee, this workshop was conducted by N. Sabrina Atikah, Krishnamoorthy,
Lee May Mey, Teo Kui Cheng, Lee Ai Wi, Ng Zhi Ying, Sarguna Kumaari, Christine
Toh, Denise Phang and Allen Khor with Lee Peck Ha as coordinator cum trainer.
The workshop was held at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and
attended by 58 participants.

Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the February’s Pupils
Introduction Session was held on 21 February 2020. The session, led by
Rajsurian Pillai, was attended by 117 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils
Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during
their pupillage period. The other members of the KLBC were also present to
provide input and possible solutions.

Dinner
An Appreciation Dinner was held at Precious Old China @ Central Market on
21 February 2020 for all members and non-members who have selflessly sacrificed
their time for the Kuala Lumpur Bar. These members and non-members have
contributed by giving lectures, conducting or moderating seminars/workshops,
representing the KLBC at hearings of Admissions to the Bar, sitting in
Sub-Committees, sponsoring our events and rendering any other form of
assistance to the KLBC.

Seminar On Writing
To Win: Effective And Persuasive Written Advocacy
Organised by
the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Brendan
Navin Siva at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The speaker spoke
on how to approach written work, the general principles of effective written
advocacy and the visual and substantive presentation of evidence and arguments.The
seminar was attended by 102 participants.

General Meeting
The
28th
Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) of the Kuala Lumpur Bar was held at the
Auditorium at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang. The office-bearers of the KLBC for 2020/21 elected at the AGM were: Chairman – Harleen Kaur
(Leena); Committee members – Anand Raj, Norliza Rasool Khan, Saravana Kumar,
Collin Arvind Andrew, Alvin Oh Seong Yew, Jacky Loi Yap Loong, Vivekananda
Sukumaran, Vivian Kuan Hui Xian, Rajsurian Pillai
and Surendra Ananth. Shashi Devan Thalmalingam was elected as the KL Bar’s
Representative on the Bar Council. It was also confirmed at the AGM that the
subscription for the year 2020
was to remain at RM125 per member.
A number of issues were also raised by the House
which the new Committee would look into.

Organised by
the Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar which main target was law students, was
presented by Farez Jinnah and Khaizan Sharizah (Sherrie) at the KL Bar
Auditorium from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 26
participants and covered, amongst others, “The relationship between a pupil and
a master – An employment or an apprenticeship?”; “The role of the Master and
its legal firm”; Brief guidance on the filing of pupillage papers”; “An allowance
of remuneration and expenses – expectation vs reality”; “An approach and
advisory to Bar Council Ruling 10.09 and workplace issues”; and “Qualified
Persons vs Authorised Persons – Agency and Ethics”.
