Seminar On Presenting Your Client’s Case - From The Inception Of The Breach To Litigation In Court
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Janet Chai Pei Ying at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 31 participants and covered, amongst others, “Analysing obligations in a contractual dispute including scope of endeavours clauses”; “Repudiatory breach vs. material breach”; “ Damages – measure of loss and limiting liability clauses”; “To terminate or not”; and “Other remedies such as specific performance and rectification”.

Seminar On Tackling Compulsory Land Acquisition And HDA Late Delivery Cases
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Ho Ai Ting at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 66 participants and covered, amongst others, “Compulsory Land Acquisition: An Evolving Lanscape”; and “Faber Union: A Look Ahead”.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee and sponsored by Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill, this seminar was presented by S. Saravana Kumar and Ooi Bee Hong at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 55 participants.

Charity Night
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, the Charity Night, themed “Whimsical Wonderland” was held on 4 October 2019 at Glasshouse, Seputeh. This year marked the 15 Anniversary and the Charity Night was organised in aid of the Independent Living & Training Centre Malaysia (“ILTC Malaysia”). ILTC Malaysia is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation formed by the disabled, for the disabled. ILTC Malaysia provides services for the disabled all over Malaysia by teaching, guiding and assisting disabled members to lead an independent and integrated life with self-confidence. ILTC Malaysia takes in individuals suffering from spinal cord injury and are wheelchair bound, and then assists them with training for, and securing, new jobs. ILTC Malaysia also sends these individuals for physiotherapy sessions.


We had a total of 15 performances raising funds at the Charity Night, namely by Adreena, Angel & The Evcs, Gabriel Fairuz Louis, Iman & Friends, Izral Partnership's Who Let The Mats Out, Jessie & The Juicy Jellybeans, JJ, Justin Faun, Larissa & Joseph, MG, Quiin Hng, Space Between Us, The White Queen Raynequella, The Young Ariffs and TriAngelz.


Our sponsors were Brickfields Asia College, UEM Sunrise Berhad, Scribe Synergy Sdn Bhd, Messrs Jamie Wong, Mah Weng Kwai & Associates, Tech Law Sdn Bhd, Joshua Rishi Andran, Brendan Navin Siva, MJ Wong and David Peter. At the close of accounts, we collected RM61,686.80 for ILTC Malaysia.


All donations and net proceeds from the Charity Night 2019 will support ILTC Malaysia to fund disabled members’ physiotherapy services, and to acquire and run a specially adapted van for the transportation of disabled members for training programmes.

Diversity In Arbitration
Organised by the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee this seminar was presented by Sudharsanan Thillainathan, Sharon Chong, Irene Mira and Shamila Neelakandan at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 20 participants.

Dialogue With The Office Bearers Of The Malaysian Bar
The Office Bearers of the Malaysian Bar paid a courtesy visit to the Kuala Lumpur Bar on 10 October 2019 and met up with members for a dialogue session during the visit. Though the turnout of members was small, there were constructive discussions on issues affecting members of the Bar. The Office Bearers also shared some of their plans on how they hoped to improve the welfare of members.

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the October’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 16 October 2019. The session, led by Alvin Oh, was attended by 96 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions.

Also included in the Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion” which aim was to educate and create awareness among the pupils on, inter alia, issues related to gender sensitisation, sexual harassment and unconscious bias. The session was conducted by Numan Afifi of Pelangi Campaign and Goh Siu Lin.

Seminar In Bahasa Malaysia - Pengenalan Kepada Prosedur Mahkamah Perusahaan
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 17 participants.

Seminar On Software Contracts: Know-How And Considerations
Organised by the Information Technology Committee, this seminar was presented by Dr. Jasmine Begum from Microsoft Corporations and Intan Haryati from Christopher & Lee Ong at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 77 participants. Dr. Jasmine Begum shared her experience in dealing with legal affairs as Microsoft’s Director of Legal, Corporate & Government Affairs and about the effects of rapid technology developments on the procurement process which further has a direct effect on legal considerations and the drafting of software contracts. Intan Haryati, on the other hand, highlighted the key terms which are essential to be incorporated in a software development contract. She also took the participants through the various approaches to a software development process.

Seminar On The Law Of Joint Ventures
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 27 participants. The main objective of the seminar was to share with the participants, in a practical manner, the variety of different legal arrangements within which entrepreneurs describe or hold them out as being in a “joint venture”.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee this workshop was presented by Honey Tan Lay Ean and Matt Wong Chong Ee at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The workshop was attended by 16 participants.

Seminar On Tourism & Hospitality Laws; Regulations, Responsibilities And Rights
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Marlysa Razak at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 11 participants and covered, amongst others, "Introduction to Tourism & Hospitality Law”; “Regulations, International Conventions and Local Laws”; “Common Legal Issues in Tourism and Travel”; “Responsibilities and Legal obligations of Travel Agents and Tour Operators”; “Limit of Liability of Travel Agents and Tour Operators”; and “Rights of Travellers in Air Travel”.

Seminar On Judicial Review: A Step By Step Guide With New Sin Yew
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by New Sin Yew at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 34 participants and covered, amongst others, "Nature of Judicial Review – Understanding what the court is doing, basic structure, supervisory jurisdiction, targets, sources of power, remedies”; “Parameters of Judicial Review – Irrationality, Procedural Impropriety, Illegality and Proportionality”; “Pleading Judicial Review – Recommended structure, procedures, forms”; and “Recent Developments – Discretion of the AG/PP. Syariah vs Civil Courts, Damages”.

Seminar On The Basics Of Cross Examination In Civil And Commercial Trials
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Brendan Navin Siva and Lavinia Kumaraendran at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 102 participants and covered, amongst others, "The objective and purpose of cross-examination"; "The nature of cross-examination in civil and commercial matters"; and "Practical tips for young lawyers".

Seminar On Writing Masterclass: Techniques And Hacks To Maximise Readership
Organised by the Publications Committee, this seminar was presented by Fahri Azzat and Tan Jin Chi at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 50 participants.


16 and 17 November 2019
Pertandingan Penghuhajan Mahkamah Peringkat Kebangsaan 2019 Organised By Malaysian Bar, Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka And IIUM
This annual competition, jointly organised by the Malaysian Bar Council, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and IIUM, was held on 16 and 17 November 2019. The Kuala Lumpur Bar was represented by Syazana Jehan, Dennis Lim and Kee Hui Yee. They obtained 1187 points after the two preliminary rounds and ranked number five out of the 12 teams. Unfortunately, only four teams proceeded to the semi-finals.

Courtesy Visit To Jabatan Ketua Pengarah Tanah & Galian (JKPTG)
The Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, represented by its Chairperson Vivek and committee members, Nahzatul Ain, Lee Peck Ha, Yogeswari Nyandy and Chong Wai Kuan, paid the courtesy visit to the JKPTG at Putrajaya. The purpose of the visit was to develop a good working relationship with JKPTG and  to discuss the upcoming Conveyancing Conference scheduled for 16 April 2020.

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the November’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 27 Novembers 2019. The session, led by Rajsurian Pillai, was attended by 70 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions.

Also included in the Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion” which aim was to educate and create awareness among the pupils on, inter alia, issues related to gender sensitisation, sexual harassment and unconscious bias. The session was conducted by Nik Shazarina of Sisters in Islam and Goh Siu Lin.

National Litigation Conference
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this Conference was held on 30 November 2019 at the Auditorium, Connexion Conference & Events Centre at Nexus Bangsar South. We had 227 participants and 70 complimentary seats for Judges, Panellists, Moderators, Speakers and Sponsors. We had five Sessions with the following moderators, panellists and speakers.


Session 1 - Discerning Recent Judicial Trends In Insolvency & Commercial Fraud Disputes

The second Pupils Night Out event was held at Concubine KL @ Kwai Chai Hong Kuala Lumpur, from 7:30 pm onwards on 13 December 2019. It was a success with a turnout of about 100 lawyers and pupils.

Meeting With AGC Kuala Lumpur
The meeting between the Criminal Law Practice Committee (“CLPC”) represented by its Chairperson, Jacky Loi and Puan Julia Ibrahim, State Prosecution Director, was held at Level 7, Unit Pendakwaan, Jabatan Peguam Negara at 2:30 pm. The purpose of the meeting was to foster a good relationship and smoothen the practice and process for DPPs of AGC Kuala Lumpur and members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar.
