Seminar on Understanding Clients’ Corporate Annual Reports & Its Financial Statements
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 85 participants and covered, amongst others, "Introductory on its importance"; "Accounting jargons made understandable for lawyers"; "What are the components of Annual Report?"; "What are these: ledger accounts, journal entries, double-entries, T-accounts?"; "Why this term “Trial Balance”?"; "Why this term “Balance Sheet”?"; "What are the salient features of a Balance Sheet?"; "What are and the types of Assets?"; "What are and the types of Liabilities?"; and " Are Balance Sheet’s liabilities an indication of “not good” financial position and/or poor financial management”.

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the May’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 8 May 2019. The session, led by Alvin Oh, was attended by 84 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”), and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions.

Seminar on Insolvency Act 1967 | Revamping The Bankruptcy Act 1967
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Trevor Jason Mark Padasian at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 54 participants and covered, amongst others, "Bankruptcy (Amendment) Bill 2016 – Insolvency Act 1967"; "Government’s Objectives"; "Subordinate Legislation – Insolvency Rules 2017 and Insolvency (Voluntary Arrangement) 2017"; "Minimum Threshold Increase (RM30,000 to RM50,000)"; "Single Order Bankruptcy"; "Voluntary Arrangement"; "Substituted Service"; "Social Guarantors and Other Guarantors"; "Prohibited Objections to Discharge of Bankrupt"; "Automatic Discharge of Bankrupt"; and "Effective Dates of the Amendments".

Workshop on Mental Health And Wellness At The Workplace
This workshop, held at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, was a collaboration between the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee and Lean in Malaysia and supported by the Australian High Commission. The event was attended by 54 participants. The Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Goledzinowski, attended the event and also delivered the keynote address. The panel session comprising three different personalities namely Azran Osman Rani, CEO & Co-Founder of Naluri; Eulis Rachmatiah Iskandar, Head of Ethics from Celcom Axiata Berhad; and Andre Gan, Managing Partner of Wong & Partners shared their experiences and their tips on handling stress at the workplace. Corporate Workshop For Pupils
Organised by the Pupils Committee, this workshop was conducted by Sheba Gumis at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Attended by 97 participants, the workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Overview: Negotiation, Due Diligence and Drafting Process"; "Commercial Considerations"; "Practical Pointers including Common Mistakes when Drafting"; "Salient Clauses including Consideration, Conditions Precedent, Completion, etc"; "Covenants and Warranties by both Vendors and Purchasers"; "Boiler Plate Clauses"; and "Remedies for Breach of Contract".

Seminar on Division Of Matrimonial Assets
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Vicky Alahakone at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Among the issues discussed were Section 76 of the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 and how the Malaysian Courts have interpreted this section before they arrive at a decision/order. The speaker also discussed whether there was an urgent need to amend Section 76 so that the Malaysian Laws will be  in line with the current laws and trends in other developed nations with regard to the division of matrimonial assets. The seminar was attended by 46 participants.


1-2 June 2019
YLC Retreat
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, the Young Lawyers Retreat was a team-building and mission-setting activity where new members would gather to ideate and decide on the plan for the committee for the year. The retreat was held at MU Hotel, Ipoh on 1 and 2 June 2019.  It was attended by 45 participants. Read the full report in RELEVAN, Issue No. 1 | August 2019.

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the June’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 12 June 2019. The session, led by Rajsurian Pillai, was attended by 108 pupils. The purpose of the Pupils Introduction Session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”), and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions.

Also included in the Pupils Introduction Session was a session on “Diversity & Inclusion” which aim was to educate and create awareness among the pupils on, amongst others, issues related to gender sensitisation, sexual harassment and unconscious bias. The session was conducted by Goh Siu Lin.

Legal Research Workshop
Organised by the Pupils Committee, this workshop was conducted by Dr. Pathmavathy Satyamoorthy, Malaysian Bar’s Librarian, Ahmad Hamidi bin Abdul Rahim, Research Specialist with LexisNexis, Nizam Bashir and Surendra Ananth, advocates and solicitors,at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. The workshop was attended by 92 participants and covered, amongst others, “Research methods and resources”; “Research from a practitioner’s perspective and presentation on search results”; and “How to more effectively use tools at hand”.

Seminar on An Introduction To Sports Law
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Richard Wee at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 24 participants and covered, amongst others, “An Overview of Sports Law”; “General Framework of Sports Law”; “Sports Contracts”; “Doping”; and “Branding and Intellectual Property in Sports”.

Seminar on Islamic Banking
Organised by the Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, this seminar was presented by Syed Adam Alhabshi at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 29 participants and covered, amongst others, “The Philosophical Foundations of Islamic Finance”; “Basic Prohibitions in Islam related to Islamic Banking”; and “Ethics in Islamic Financial Services”.

Criminal Litigation Workshop For Pupils
Organised by the Pupils Committee, this workshop was conducted by Lim Chi Chau and Jacky Loi Yap Loong at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Attended by 56 participants, this workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Obtaining Client's Statement”; “Bail Application”; “Mitigation”; and “Trial Process".

Meeting With The Managing Judge Of The Kuala Lumpur Courts And Criminal Division Of The Kuala Lumpur High Court
This meeting between the Managing Judge of the Kuala Lumpur Courts, the Criminal Division of the Kuala Lumpur High Court, KLBC Criminal Law Practice Committee, Legal Aid Foundation (“YBGK”) and KL Legal Aid Centre was held at 3:30 pm at Bilik Melati, Level 6, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. The main discussion was on issues pertaining to YBGK. The KLBC Criminal Law Practice Committee was represented by its Chairperson, Jacky Loi whileYBGK was represented by Ravi Nekoo and KL Legal Aid Centre was represented by Collin Arvind Andrew.

Seminar On Profits From Disposal Of Real Property: Chargeable Gains Or Business Income?
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 28 participants. The primary objective of this seminar was to assist lawyers to guide their clients in determining whether a disposal of property is governed under the Real Property Gains Tax  Act 1976 or Income Tax Act 1967.

Organised by the Sports Committee, the competition was held at Samba De Futsal, Petaling Jaya. A total of 22 teams (19 Men’s and 3 Women’s) participated in the event and the results were as follows:

Sambutan Amal Aidilfitri
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, this Hari Raya get-together was held at Pusat Jagaan Rumah Kesayangan in Petaling Jaya at 10:00 am. RM1,400.00 was collected from Members of the Bar which was allocated towards meals, duit Raya and Raya gifts for the children, as well as groceries for the home.

Charity Night 2018 - Cheque Presentation To CLAPAM
Proceeds from the 14th Charity Night organised by the Young Lawyers Committee on 12 October 2018 amounting to RM40,084.85 was presented to the representatives of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Malaysia (CLAPAM) at 3:00 pm at Wisma Central, Jalan Ampang.

Seminar on To Generalise Or To Specialise?
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar was presented Fahri Azzat, Syarihah Razman, Amir Zharif Abdullah and Rajsurian Pillai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:45 pm to 5:45 pm. The seminar, attended by 79 participants, was moderated by Louis Liaw. Amongst the issues discussed at the seminar were, “The pros and cons of specialising”; “The methods of personal branding”; “The factors and implications of setting up a law firm”; and “Can a non-litigator switch to litigation practice and vice-versa?”.

Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee, this workshop was presented by Lee Peck Ha, R. Seminar on Financial Planning And Insurance
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar was presented by Jeno Chong, Group Agency Manager of Great Eastern Life and Ooi Sie Yuan, a UOB KayHian Dealer at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 50 participants. The objectives of the seminar were to raise awareness among young lawyers on the importance of wealth protection through proper insurance planning and for them to learn about the practical ideas and solutions on wealth accumulation through proper investment tools.

Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Gananathan Pathmanathan and James Khong Yoon Hong at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar, attended by 103 participants, aimed to highlight the effective advocacy skills required in making ex-parte applications for interim injunctions.

Meeting With Judges And The Director Of The Kuala Lumpur Courts
This meeting between KLBC Civil Practice & Court Liaison Committee (“CPCLC”), the Managing Judge and the Administration of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex was held at 3:00 pm at Bilik Anggerik, Level 6, Kuala Lumpur Court Complex. The CPCLC was represented by its Co-Chairpersons - Harleen Kaur (Leena) and Nizam Bashir and members - Wong Chong Ee and Syafinaz Vani. The issues that were discussed were about toilets, cafeteria, car park and etc. Most issues raised came from the feedback counter on 11 April 2019.

Seminar on Why More Women Should Invest
Organised by the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee, this seminar was presented by Wong Wai Ken, Country Manager of StashAway – Malaysia, at the Meeting Room of the KL Bar Secretariat from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The speaker not only spoke about why more women should invest but also shared investing basics such as, “Assets classes and what suits you”; “Why timelines are important when investing”; “Is timing the market the right thing to do?”; and “Diversification and how to create a balanced portfolio”. The seminar was attended by 12 participants.
