KL Bar Pool Open Competition - 10-Ball Singles
The 4th KL Bar Pool Open competition was held at
5ive Star Pool & Bar, SS15 Subang Jaya on Saturday, 6 January 2018. The
format of play was 10-Ball in a mixed category, i.e. ladies and men play in the
same draw. The players were ranked on their apparent abilities with the better
ones giving the weaker ones a handicap of a certain number of frames in order
to even out the competition.
10 Ball is not played as much as 8 Ball or 9 Ball.
It requires a combination of strategies of the latter two formats. Some of the
participants were playing 10 Ball for the first time, but to their credit, they
got an understanding of the game really quick. None more so than when they only
had to pot one ball to win the game, i.e. the 10 Ball itself, when their
opponent had potted all 9 balls in sequence only to fail to pot the 10 ball!
The players were separated into two groups. After
the round robin group stage, the top eight players qualified for the knock out
rounds starting with the quarter-finals.
The competition was played in a genial spirit, with
the players enjoying meeting new lawyer friends who shared a common interest in
pool. That said, there were some very close and competitive matches that went
to the wire. The one lady who entered, Leanne Kok, won against one of the men
and came close to winning against another. Ankit Sanghvi defeated a couple of
more fancied opponents en route to the final which he won 7-5 to become the
overall winner.
