Introduction
For the past 13 years, Charity Night has been organised as an annual event by the Kuala Lumpur Young Lawyers Committee (‘KLYLC’) to raise funds for worthy social causes.
Previous beneficiaries include the National Autism Society of Malaysia, the National Kidney Foundation, Project Light A Home, Mercy Malaysia, and the Selangor and the Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped.
This year’s Charity Night 2017 was held on 10 November 2017 at MAKESPACE @ QUILL CITY MALL and the beneficiary this year is the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Malaysia (CLAPAM).
CLAPAM is a non-profit, non-government organisation and a support group consisting of volunteers from parents with children born with cleft lip and/or palate, adults with cleft lip and/or palate and healthcare professionals who manage such individuals. Although cleft lip and palate are common, public’s awareness about it remains low. CLAPAM serves as a one stop centre to assist children born with cleft lip and/or palate and raise public awareness about it. It is a privilege and an honour for KLYLC to be able to assist CLAPAM in its noble cause.
The Night
Unlike previous years of Charity Night which were held either at clubs or at well-lit and grand places, this year’s venue was situated in an underground space with a bare interior. The atmosphere was dim and smoky, the floor was rugged. The choice of venue was made on purpose, to fit the theme of ‘underground rock and roll’.
Attendees were informed of the punk / rock dress code and many kept to it. Lawyers substituted their daily penguin suit to chains, chequered apparels, boots, and eye liners. The vibe was excellent.
Attendees started trickling into the venue from 7:30 p.m. and were greeted by a photo booth at the entrance. Most posed with the various props available and had their photos taken. Those who did so received an instant printout of their photos as souvenir.
As a considerable crowd gathered, the masters of ceremony of the night – Kelvesh Deshenraj and Chew Jiar Li kick-started the party.
As tradition dictates, Goh Siu Lin, the KLBC Chairperson gave the opening speech. Her speech was followed by a ‘call to action’ speech by CLAPAM’s President Mr. Zainal Ahmad.
After the opening, the party began.
Performers took the stage one by one, performing their best in hope to woo the attendees to donate. Donations were collected through donation boxes carried around the venue by box ambassadors. Each performance was assigned a donation box and two box ambassadors. At the end of the night, the top 3 performances that amass the most donations would be announced and be given a trophy.
There were a total of 10 performances - Umar, Mani, Iman, Angel Lee, Collin and Dev (also known as Back to the Streets), Andrea, Izzat, CLOPLAY (Band from Christopher & Lee Ong), Larissa & Joseph Cheah, Nicola & John, and finally the band of Neo, Jessie, Jeremy Ong, and Sam.
During the intermission, the KLYLC Chairperson, New Sin Yew, took the stage and addressed the crowd on KLYLC’s proud tradition of organising the Charity Night annually. In his words, ‘once every year we gather to do two things lawyers do best, do good and have fun!’.
The attendees were treated with a variety of performances, from Bollywood dance, singing with guitar, duets, street dancing, live band and more. At one point, the crowd surrounded the performers of CLOPLAY as they belted out the timeless crowd favourite Cantonese song of Hoi Fut Tin Hong and started head-banging and singing along.
Unsurprisingly, CLOPLAY emerged as the best performance for this year as they collected the most donation in excess of RM10,000.00 on the night itself.
Regardless of who is the winner, every cent counts as it brings a child one step closer to healing from cleft lip and palate condition, regaining speech ability, and self-esteem.
Once the 10 performances were over, the crowd was treated to the guest performance by two former KLYLC Chairperson, Alex Netto and Choo Dee Wei, feat Chen Yu Szen.
Perhaps as a testament to the success of that night, many remained at the venue after the end of the event at about 11:00 p.m., drinking and chatting away.
The Committee would like to record its heartfelt gratitude to all of our sponsors. Most importantly, this event would not have been possible without the undying work by those behind the scenes - Melissa Linda Dass, Shugan Raman, Louis Liaw, Beatrice Chin, Daniel Annamalai, Davey Wan, Sylvester Low, Ashwinna Perkas, Alvin Oh, Rachel Tan, Faye Lim, Chew Jiar li, Kelvesh Deshenraj, Khaizan Sharizad, Chua Hui Chee, Lee Pui Yee, William Ch’ng, Wong Kar Ling, and Chen Yu Szen,
Overall, Charity Night 2017 raised RM 44,508.67 and received the following feedback:
"Best in recent years..."
"Abundance of food and drinks, hardly we didn't run out of food and alcohol..."
"Unorthodox leading to an extraordinary night..."
"Did you all pay for the performances?"
Thank you once again and we hope to see you at Charity Night 2018!!
