KLBC Activities Report for November 2017

Pupils Introduction Session
A monthly tradition, the November’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 1 November 2017. The session, attended by 96 pupils, was led by Alvin Oh. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period. The other executive committee members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. As in previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

The Pupils Introduction Session included a session on harassment and/or sexual harassment led by Betty Yeoh from AWAM. The purpose of the session is to educate pupils on such issues and also to provide them details on how to report harassment if they are faced with such behaviour.

Forum on the Introduction to the World of Cryptocurrency, Blockchain and Bitcoin 
The above forum, organised by the Small Firms and Practitioners’ Affairs Committee, was held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the KL Bar Auditorium. The panellists were Kohei Morinaga from the Finatext Group, Suraya Zainudin from ACCESS Blockchain Association Committee and Jenna Beh Huey Ching from Fintech Division in MDEC. The forum was very well received with 81 participants.

Criminal Litigation Workshop for Pupils
The Pupils Committee organised a Criminal Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 9 November 2017 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Obtaining Client’s Statement"; "Bail Application"; "Mitigation"; and "Trial Process". 34 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by Lim Chi Chau and Jacky Loi Yap Loong.

Charity Night
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, the 13th consecutive Charity Night was held on 10 November 2017 at Makespace @ Quill City Mall from 7:00 pm onwards, and featured performances by young lawyers competing to raise the most funds for charity. Monies raised this year will be in aid of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Malaysia (CLAPAM). CLAPAM is a non-profit, non-government organisation and a support group consisting of volunteers from parents with children born with cleft lip and/or palate, adults with cleft lip and/or palate and healthcare professionals who manage such individuals. First established in 1992 and officially registered with the Registrar of Societies (R.O.S.) in 1993, CLAPAM provides various support services including counselling, information on feeding and care of cleft babies, and hospital/house visits. CLAPAM also functions as a link between its members and medical professionals. Click here to view the photos.

Seminar on Judicial Review 101
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Shanmuga Kanesalingam at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 42 participants and covered, amongst others, "What relief can you get?"; "When, where and how do you file the application"; "Preparing the accompanying statement"; "Procedure at Leave stage"; "Steps to be taken after getting leave"; "Common problems"; "Alternative remedies and Ouster Clauses"; "Is there a decision at all"; "Delays and Extension of Time"; and "Stay".

Seminar on Money Laundering and the Law
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Dato’ Jagjit Singh a/l Bant Singh at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 19 participants.

Pre-Trial Preparation for Criminal Briefs
Organised by the Criminal Practice Committee, this seminar, which attracted 24 participants, was presented by Collin Arvind Andrew at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. The seminar received excellent reviews from the participants.

Seminar on Enforcement of Foreign Judgment
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Claudia Cheah Pek Yee at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 18 participants and covered, amongst others, "Enforcement under the Reciprocal Enforcement of Judgments Act, 1958 (“REJA”)"; "Requirements & Procedure"; "Grounds to Challenge/Set Aside"; "Enforcement under Common Law"; "Requirements & Procedure"; and "Recent Developments".

Seminar on Mergers & Acquisitions: Managing Commonly Encountered Issues
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 63 participants and covered, amongst others, "What is M & A?"; "Variants in M & A"; "Excluding Takeover & Merger involving PLC"; "Evaluating the strategies, both legal & biz"; "Price Determination"; "Valuation of the Target"; "Methods of Valuation"; "Preliminary i.e. Prior to Formal Contract"; "Legal issues in a typical M & A"; "Common agreements to address legal issues"; and "Factors to consider in structuring a M & A".
