Seminar on An Introduction to Industrial Court Procedures
Organised by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Atan Mustaffa Yussof Ahmad at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 54 participants and covered, amongst others, "Industrial Relations Act 1967"; "Industrial Court Rules 1967"; "Industrial Relations Regulations 1967"; "The Industrial Court"; "Industrial Court Proceedings"; "Preparing and Presenting"; "Costs and Awards"; "The nature of awards"; "The limits imposed by sec. 30(6) IRA"; "Effect of an award"; "Avenues to challenge an award of the Industrial Court"; "Judicial review"; "Application under sec. 33A"; "Stay of award"; and "Non-compliance of an award & Penalty".

Pupils
Introduction Session
A
monthly tradition, the August’s Pupils Introduction Session was held on 2
August 2017. The session, attended by 76 pupils, was led by Alvin Oh. The
purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during
their pupillage period. The other executive committee members of the KLBC were
also present to provide input and possible solutions. As in previous sessions,
the pupils were shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar. It
further included a session on harassment and/or sexual harassment that was
introduced in the July’s Pupils Introduction Session and it was conducted by
Betty Yeoh, a founder member of AWAM.

Lawyered but not Financially Battered - A Financial Planning Workshop
Organised by the Young Lawyers Committee, this workshop was presented by Aaron Tang Shen Lee (Mr Stingy’s Blog), Julian Ng (former presenter/ producer @ BFM) and Alex Anton Netto at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The workshop was attended by 68 participants.

A Follow up meeting on the e-tanah
A follow-up meeting was requested by the Bar Council Conveyancing Practice Committee to further discuss issues relating to the e-tanah. CCPC was well represented with the Chairperson, KLBC Representative to BC Khaizan Sharizad Ab Razak and 4 other CCPC members namely Dennis Teoh, Edham Reza Shah, Mohd Arif Asyraf b. Sukiman and Sarguna Kumaari Munusamy.

Organised by the Corporate and Conveyancing Practice
Committee, this workshop was presented by R Yogeswari, Dennis Teoh, Susan
Joseph, Nahzatul Ain, Sarah Kambali, Chong Wai Kuan, Daphne Lew Chan Yee and Ow
Hui Ching at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The workshop was
attended by 58 participants and covered, amongst
others, “Crafting the final SPA”; “Conditions, Precedents and Subsequent”;
“Chaos, Claims and Billing”; “Conflict of Interest”; “Conveyancing Process
A-Z”; “Private Caveats”; “Co-operation from the Support Staff”; “Client
Management”; “Client’s Interest”; “Options to Purchase”; “Completion Delays”;
“Land Acquisition”; and “RPGT (Act 169). It also included an Update on E-Tanah
by Nor Azura binti Abdul Rahman, Head, Assistant Director (Registration) of the
Wilayah Land Office.

Seminar on Medical Law
Organised
by the Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Karthi
Kanthabalan at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The seminar was
attended by 61 participants and covered, amongst others, "Medical
Litigation"; "Limitation Periods, Procedural Issues, Jurisdiction of
the Various Courts, Causes of Action, and Relief"; "Taking
Instructions, Access to Medical Records, Identifying and Preparing Instructions
to Experts, Medical Examinations, Experts' Reports, Experts' Fees, and
Preparation of Cause Papers"; "Using Medical Literature and Aids to
the Giving of Expert Evidence, Presentation of Lay and Expert Evidence, and
Preparing Arguments"; "Excessive claims, seeking publicity and their
consequences such as negligence claims and complaints against lawyers";
"Legal Questions affecting Medical Negligence, including regarding the
Standard of Care, Causation of Damage, Assessment of Damages, and Costs";
and "Other Types of Litigation with a Medical Content, including
Disciplinary Proceedings, Judicial Review, Criminal Cases, and Employment
Disputes".

Blood Donation Campaign
Organised by the Recreation, Social &
Culture Committee with the assistance of the National Blood Bank, a Blood
Donation Drive was held on 14 August 2017 at Level 2 of the Kuala Lumpur Court
Complex at Jalan Duta. Members of the Bar, Court staff and members of the
public nobly came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Drive.
A total of 51 donors
registered. Unfortunately, only 46 were eligible to donate. The five were
rejected because they were either underweight, having high blood pressure or
low blood pressure or had lived in the United Kingdom from 1980 till 1996 or in
Europe between 1980 until the present. A total of 46 units of blood were
collected from the caring donors.

Seminar on Robes, Bibs & Heels – Trapeze or
Trampoline
Organised by the Gender Equality and Diversity
Committee, this seminar was presented by Anit Kaur Randhawa, Constance Low and Daniel
Bong Cheng Hua at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The speakers
spoke on the challenges of balancing legal practice and family life. The
seminar was attended by 11 participants.

Seminar on the Law of Joint Ventures
Organised
by the Professional Development Committee this seminar was presented by Lim
Kien Chai at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The seminar was
attended by 49 participants. The
main objective of the seminar was to share with the participants, in a practical
manner, the variety of different legal arrangements within which entrepreneurs
describe or hold them out as being in a “joint venture”.
Seminar on Unenforceable/Enforcement – Contract for
Professional Fees Organised by the Professional
Development Committee, this seminar was presented by N. Murugayah at the KL Bar
Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 14 participants
and covered, amongst others, "High Court calling up contract for
Professional Fees entered for cancellation under the Legal Profession Act 1976
(LPA)"; "Taxation where ordered by Court against contract entered for
professional fees"; "All contracts, the claim for Professional Fees
via proceedings in Court"; and "Enforcement of Judgment on contract
entered – section 118 of the LPA".

Cover Letters & Job Interviews: Do’s & Don’t’s
Organised
by the Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar was presented by Mohd Izral
Khairy, Richard Wee Thiam Seng and Jamie Wong Siew Min at the KL Bar Auditorium
from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 43 participants. Besides
gaining insights on CVs, Cover Letters and Job Interviews from the speakers,
the participants also got to ask the speakers questions and have their CV
checked by them.

Committee, this seminar was presented by Thenesh Kannaa at the KL Bar
Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 72 participants
and covered, amongst others, "Practical tips in computation of disposal
price and acquisition price"; "Common Issues in determination of
disposal date and acquisition date"; "Transfer between relatives and
inheritance"; "Cases where the acquirer may be assessed";
"RPGT on sale of shares"; "Does RPGT on sale/purchase of a
foreign-incorporated company that owns land/building in Malaysia?"; and
"Situations when the gain from disposal of real property is subject to
income tax rather than RPGT".
