KLBC Activities Report for August 2016

CCPC Seminar on Wills, Probate, LA and SEDA

Organised by the KLBC Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee (CCPC), this seminar was presented by Susan Joseph, Nahzatul Ain binti Mohd Khalid, Too Ji Voon and Daphne Lew Chah Yee on 2 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 60 participants.

YLC Seminar on The Laws of Bankruptcy

Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee (YLC), this seminar was presented by Conrad Francis Lopez on 3 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 21 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Jurisdiction"; "Acts of Bankruptcy"; "Bankruptcy Notice"; "Interim Applications"; "Bankruptcy Petitions"; "Role of the Director General of Insolvency"; "Distribution of Assets"; and "Discharge".

Pupils Introduction Session

As a monthly tradition organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for August was held on 4 August 2016. The session, attended by 63 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. Like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

YLC Charity Gala

Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers Committee (YLC), the 12th consecutive "Charity Night” renamed “Charity Gala” was held on 5 August 2016 at Glasshouse @ Seputeh from 7:00 pm onwards, and featured performances by young lawyers competing to raise the most funds for charity. The money raised this year was in aid of National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM). NASOM is a non-profit, nationwide non-governmental welfare organisation which was formed in 1987 by a group of concerned parents and professionals. Currently, NASOM has established 19 centres around the whole country which provide a variety of programmes and it strives to provide a range of support services to assist people living with autism, especially children and their immediate family members.

Interstate Bar Games
The Interstate Bar Games this year was hosted by the Malacca Bar Committee in Malacca and played on 6 August 2016. Kuala Lumpur Bar emerged as overall champions and the performance of our teams in the respective sports was as below:

1. Basketball - Champion
2. Netball - Champion and 1st Runner-up
3. Ladies Futsal - Champion
4. Golf - 1st Runner-up
5. Men’s Soccer - 4th and 6th
6. Badminton - Champion
7. Volleyball - Champion

Blood Donation Campaign
A Blood Donation Campaign, organised by the Social, Arts & Recreation Committee with the assistance of the National Blood Bank, was held on 10 August 2016 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Level 2 of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex at Jalan Duta. Members of the Bar, Court staff and members of the public nobly came forward to participate in this Blood Donation Campaign. 84 people registered but only 64 were eligible to donate with 20 being rejected for various reasons. PDC-AWL Activists Series on Gender and Sexuality for Lawyers
Jointly organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC) and the Association of Women Lawyers (AWL), this seminar was presented by Thilaga, a community organiser and researcher from Justice for Sisters, on 11 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 29 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Introduction"; "Sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation"; "Legal barriers"; and "Line of discrimination" with a Q&A session.

PDC Seminar on The Fundamentals of Conveyancing
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Jeremiah R. Gurusamy on 17 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 23 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Parties to A Sale and Purchase Transaction"; "Property With and Without Individual Title"; "Direct Developer and Subsale Transactions"; "Overview of the Conveyancing Process"; and "Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them".

PC Criminal Litigation Workshop
The KLBC Pupils Committee organised a Criminal Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 22 August 2016 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the following areas, "Obtaining Client’s Statement"; "Bail Application"; "Mitigation"; and "Trial Process". 14 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by Lim Chi Chau and Samantha Chong Yin Xin.

PDC Seminar on GST for Real Property Transactions

Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Thenesh Kannaa on 23 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 106 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Overview of the GST"; "GST on property transactions – exemptions, registration and the ‘business test’ for individuals and companies"; "Incorporating GST clauses on sale and purchase agreements (S&P)"; "Practical tips on GST-related clauses in rental agreements"; and "Transitional provisions for real properties (S&P before 1 April 2015)".

PDC Seminar on The Registration and Dissolution of Muslim Marriages in Malaysia

Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Sa’adiah Din on 26 August 2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 21 participants. The seminar covered the following topics: "Registration Process"; "Wali Hakim Application"; "Registration of Marriage (solemnised overseas)"; "Application for leave to contract a subsequent marriage (Polygamy)"; and "Dissolution of Marriage, Amicable Divorce (Sec. 47), Ta’liq, Khulo’ and Fasakh".
