Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 17 February
2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended
by 20 participants.

Pupils
Introduction Session
As a monthly tradition organised by
the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for February was
held on 18 February 2016. The session, attended by 74 pupils, was led by Shashi
Devan and assisted by Dinesh Muthal and Yoges Verasuntharam. The purpose of the
session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the
Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar
Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session
for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage
period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and
possible solutions. Like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video
montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

Proceedings (1)
Two Reference Proceedings were held
this year for 19 departed members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar. The first one was
held on Friday, 19 February 2016 at 9:00 am and presided by Y.A. Datuk Hanipah
Binti Farikullah and was in respect and memory of Dato’ Choong Phooi Ying, Adri
Amrul bin Ariffin, Juriyah @ Juraiyah binti Jamaludin, Satgurunathan
Nagalingam, Dato’ Wan Nik bin Wan Ismail, Balakisnan Appalanaido, Ravi
Muniandy, Alexis Diana a/p Alexander Gerald and Ameenuddin bin Mohamed Ibrahim.

Seminar on Defamation Laws in Malaysia
Organised by the KLBC Young Lawyers
Committee (YLC), this seminar was presented by Alwin Rajasurya on 19 February
2016 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended
by 37 participants. The scope of the seminar was as follows: "What is a
defamatory statement?"; "Libel and Slander";
"Innuendos"; "Publication"; "Damages"; and
"Defences".

Visit
and Handover of Reading Materials to the Sungai Buloh Prison
Organised by the KLBC Criminal
Practice Committee (CPC), the month-long campaign to collect reading materials
was held from 7 September to 7 October 2015 and it brought in over 1,000 books
and magazines for the inmates in the Sungai Buloh Prison. On 19 February 2016, CPC joined forces
with LexisNexis Malaysia Sdn Bhd which held their own Book Drive, to hand over
the reading materials to the Sungai Buloh Prison.

(AWL), this seminar was presented by Meera Samanther on 24 February 2016 at the
KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The seminar was attended by 11
participants.

Annual General Meeting of the Kuala Lumpur Bar
The 24th Annual General Meeting
(“AGM”) of the Kuala Lumpur Bar scheduled for 2:00 pm kicked off with a Forum
on the Evolution of CPD conducted by Richard Wee Thiam Seng and Santhi Latha.
The office-bearers of the KLBC for 2016/17 elected at the AGM were: Chairman -
Ravin Singh; Committee members - Goh Siu Lin, Amir Bahari, Harleen Kaur
(Leena), Foong Cheng Leong, Khaizan Sharizad binti Ab Razak (Sherrie), Alex
Anton Netto, Shashi Devan Thalmalingam, Vinu Kamalananthan, Jacky Loi Yap Loong
and Alwin Rajasurya. Jeremiah R. Gurusamy was elected as the KL Bar’s
Representative to the Bar Council.
