KLBC Activities Report for September 2015

Pupils Introduction Session
As a monthly tradition organised by the KLBC Pupils Committee, the Pupils Introduction Session for September was held on 3 September 2015. The session, attended by 79 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan. The purpose of the session is to introduce pupils to the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and other members of the KLBC were also present to provide input and possible solutions. Like previous sessions, the pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.


7 September to 7 October 2015
Reading Materials for Sungai Buloh Prison
The KLBC Criminal Practice Committee (CPC) launched a month-long campaign from 7 September to 7 October 2015 to collect reading materials in the form of books and magazines for the benefit of the inmates at the Sungai Buloh Prison.

Pupils Workshop on Conveyancing
Organised specifically for pupils by the KLBC Pupils Committee, this workshop held on 9 September 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm was presented by Michael Leow Yon Meng. It focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a conveyancing brief covering the following areas, "Overview of the Conveyancing Process"; "Essential clauses found in a Sale & Purchase Agreement"; "How to fill up the relevant NLC Forms"; and "Practical Pointers for the conveyancing lawyer". 46 pupils attended the workshop.

PDC Seminar - An Introduction to Sukuk
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Kelvin Loh Hsien Han on 18 September 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 41 participants. The seminar covered the following topics, "Key differences between conventional bonds and sukuk"; "Types of sukuk structures"; "Issuance process and applicable laws"; "Typical legal documentation"; and "Recent developments".

24th Sports Carnival – KL Bar vs RCS
The 24th Annual Sports Carnival between the KL Bar and Royal Selangor Club (RSC) for the YA Tan Sri Dato’ Harun Hashim Challenge Trophy was held on 19 September 2015.  The Series ended in a 4-4 tie with the KL Bar winning at cricket, pool, darts and "boat race" and the RSC winning at badminton, tennis, soccer and hockey. The End-of-Games and Prize-Giving Dinner was well attended.

PDC Seminar for Lawyers on Managing Office & Client's Accounts of a Law Firm
Organised by the KLBC Professional Development Committee (PDC), this seminar was presented by Lim Kien Chai on 22 September 2015 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The seminar was attended by 33 participants. The seminar covered the following topics, "Accounting of Legal Firm"; "Effective supervision of accounting staff and staff dealing with monies"; "System of Internal Control, as check and balance"; "Pitfalls to avoid"; and "Revenue and expenses and its taxability or “allow-ability”".
