Workshop for Pupils
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare
Committee organised a Corporate Workshop specifically for pupils on 6 August 2014
focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief covering the
following areas "Overview:
Negotiation, due diligence and drafting process", "Commercial
considerations", "Practical pointers including common mistakes when
drafting", "Salient clauses including consideration, conditions precedent,
completion etc.", "Covenants and warranties by both Vendors and
Purchasers", "Boiler plate clauses" and "Remedies for
breach of contract". 45 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted
by Sheba Gumis.

Meeting
with the Pengarah of the Wilayah Land Office
A meeting between the
Wilayah Land Office and KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee
(CCPC), Bar Council Conveyancing Practice Committee (CPC) and SBC Conveyancing
Practice and SRE was held on 7 August 2014. This was the second meeting for the year
between the interested parties and was held at Rumah Persekutuan. CCPC was represented by Jeremiah Gurusamy,
Amir Bahari, Lee Peck Ha and Sarah Kambali. There were also representatives
from the Selangor Bar and the Bar Council in attendance. Issues discussed were
mainly updates on the actions taken by the Wilayah Land Office on the arising
issues from the previous meeting held on 9 May 2014.

Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar
Pupils Welfare Committee, the pupils introduction session for August was held
on 7 August 2014. The session, attended by 49 pupils, was led by Shashi Devan.
Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur
Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC)
and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to
raise issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and
members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. The
pupils were also shown a video montage of the History of the Malaysian Bar.

Workshop on Public Interest Litigation/Strategic Litigation @ Thistle, Port
Dickson
The
KL Bar Young Lawyers (YLC) and Malaysian
Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) organised a Public
Interest Litigation/Strategic Litigation Camp from 7 to 10 August 2014 at Thistle
Hotel, Port Dickson. 15 members participated in the Camp.

Bar Monthly Social Get-together
Lawyers gathered at La Bodega Lounge, Bangsar Baru on 8 August 2014 for
the August edition of the Social Get-together. The turnout was unusually low that
night as some were away for the Strategic Litigation Camp that week and the
Bersih Fundraiser.

Community Project: Kechara Soup Kitchen Volunteer Programme
Organised by the KL Bar
Young Lawyers Committee (YLC), this community project was held on 9 August 2014
from 8:00 pm to 2:30 am. Kechara Soup Kitchen is a registered NGO with an
objective of providing food for the homeless on the streets and the poor. 20
members of the YLC volunteered at Kechara for one night to prepare and
distribute food to the homeless.

Workshop on Basic Conveyancing Practice
Organised by the KL Bar
Professional Development Committee, this workshop was presented by Jeremiah R
Gurusamy on 13 August 2014 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The workshop was attended by 52 participants. The workshop covered, "Sale
and Purchase of Property with or without title”, “Procedures for direct
purchase from developer and sub-sale", "Real Property Gains
Tax", "Loan Procedures thereto",
"Relevant Bar Council Rulings for Conveyancing Matters" and
"Solicitors Remuneration Order 2005".

Organised by the KL Bar
Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar was presented by Ravin Singh on 15 August
2014 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The seminar was attended
by 29 participants. The seminar covered, “Arrest”, “Remand”, “Charge”, “Bail”
and “Mitigation”.

Young Lawyers Committee, this seminar was presented by Lee Shih on 19 August 2014
at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 6:15 pm. The seminar was attended by
70 participants. The seminar covered, "The Corporate Litigator’s
Toolkit", "Foss v Harbottle: The two-headed dragon", "The
WMDs: Winding-up, Minority Oppression and Derivative Action",
"Holding the Fort: Interim Remedies", "Arbitration and
Shareholder Disputes" and "Case studies: 50/50 Split, The Good Wive,

Professional Development Committee, this seminar was presented by Thenesh
Kannaa on 29 August 2014 at the KL Bar Auditorium from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The
seminar was attended by 120 participants. . The seminar covered, "The
Malaysian GST model and its mechanism", "An overview of the GST Act
2014 and the Ministerial orders issued", "Existing contracts - who
bears the tax?", "GST-related issues to be stated on the future
business contracts" and "Does GST apply on disbursements?".

7 September 2014 at Skytrex Adventure Park, Taman Pertanian Malaysia at 9:00 am.

for the first time, this Pupils Night Out was held at Page 2, Publika, Solaris
Dutamas on 19 September 2014. The response was overwhelming with a turnout of
close to 50 pupils and members.

Due to overwhelming
response, the KL Bar Professional Development Committee organised a repeat
session of this seminar which was presented by Thenesh Kannaa on 14 October 2014
at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. The seminar was
attended by 202 participants. The seminar covered, "The Malaysian GST

Bar Night 2014 commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Charity Night
Jointly organised by the KL
Bar Social, Arts & Culture Committee and the Young Lawyers Committee, this
event was held on 18 October 2014 at Soju Sunway @ Sunway Resort Hotel from
6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. In honour of the KLYLC Charity Night reaching a decade,
this year's annual charity night was combined with the KL Bar Night. The 10th
edition of the Charity Night was geared towards raising money for the National
Kidney Foundation (NKF), namely to help purchase dialysis machines to be placed
in NKF centres in rural parts of Malaysia. Performers for the night were Viva
La France, Riry, Misdemeanour, The Transcribers, Ruth Garnet Maran, Dev,
Democratic Donuts and SYB. There was also a Guest Performance by Bu Bu Cha Cha.

The KL Bar Pupils Committee
organised a Public Interest Litigation Workshop specifically for pupils on 28
October 2014 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of handling a brief
covering the following areas, "What is public interest litigation?"
"The role of lawyer in PIL cases" and "Dealing with PIL
cases". 18 pupils attended the Workshop which was conducted by New Sin Yew.
