Pupils Introduction
Session
Organised by the KL Bar
Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for December was held on 4
December 2013. The session, attended by 77 pupils,
was led by Vince Chong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala
Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during
their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input
and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session
were pupil’s allowance, heavy workload, unfriendly staff at the RKKK (Petition)
Registry and pupils only being able to find out if their papers were in order
for the s.36(2) LPA application on the day of the hearing itself and not
earlier.

KL Bar Monthly Social
Get-together
About 15 lawyers
gathered at BAR 1981 @ Solaris Publika on 6 December 2013 for the December
Social Get-together, the lowest turnout thus far. Everyone had a great time but
parted early at 11:00 pm.

KLYLC Meeting UNDER THE TREE
In conjunction with International
Human Rights Day, the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”) organised a
Meeting UNDER THE TREE at Lake Gardens on 7 December 2013. There was a briefing
by Ambiga Sreenevasan on Freedom of Expression, Roger Chan Weng Keng on Environmental
Rights and Goh Siu Lin on Equality.

Pleadings
Ong Yu Jian from Messrs
Raj, Ong & Yudistra presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 10 December 2013. The seminar was attended by 29
participants.

Meeting on implementation of Access Card and Boom Gate at the KL Courts
The KLBC was invited to
the Meeting on 12 December 2013 which was called by the Court to brief tenants/occupants
of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex on the implementation of access card and boom
gate which will be installed at the left wing to control access to Level B1 and
B2.

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to GST
Anand Raj and Irene
Yong from Messrs Shearn Delamore & Co. presented the seminar which was held
at the KL Bar Auditorium at 4:00 pm on 12 December 2013. The seminar was
attended by 50 participants. The seminar covered "Key GST Principles";
"Scope and Charge to Tax"; "Case Studies";
"Comparative Legislation"; and "Criminal Provisions".

Introduction to Islamic Wills
Amir Bahari from Messrs
Bahari & Bahari presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 13 December 2013. The seminar was attended by 29
participants. The seminar covered "Legal Framework"; "Sources of
Islamic Will"; "Issues in Islamic Will"; "Strategic
Planning with Trustee Corporation"; "6 Steps in Islamic Will";
and "Effective Estate Planning Tools".

Pupils Workshop on Criminal
Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils
Welfare Committee organised a criminal litigation workshop specifically for
pupils on 20 December 2013 focusing primarily on the practical aspects of
handling a brief, covering the following areas, “Client Interview”;
“Mitigation”; “Bail Application” and “Trial Process”. 28 pupils attended the
workshop which was conducted by Farhan Read and Muhammad Fadhli bin Mat Sutris.

KLYLC’s Visit to Asrama
Cahaya
On
28 December 2013, a visit to Asrama Cahaya was organised by the
KLYLC to distribute the balance of the proceeds from the 2011 Charity Night
that was allocated to the home. The wonderful residents of Asrama Cahaya, all
senior in age who were abandoned as babies due to their disabilities, were
presented with goodie bags and other gifts purchased with the proceeds. We
spent a beautiful morning with the residents singing hymns and Christmas carols
