PAC-PDC FREE Talk on ‘How
to Report Sexual Harassment - Breaking the Wall of Silence’
Jointly organised by
the Practitioners Affairs Committee and the Professional Development Committee,
Janice Anne Leo Selvanathan from Messrs Shook Lin & Bok presented the talk
which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 12 November 2013. The talk
was attended by 57 participants. The talk covered the following areas: "What
is sexual harassment - understanding the Code", "Who is
susceptible?", "What to do when you have been sexually
harassed?", "What actions can be taken by your employer?" and
"If your employer fails to take any action - what are your options?".

Discussion with the
Supervising Judge of the KL Subordinate Courts
The Co-Chairpersons of the Civil Practice Committee, HR
Dipendra and Arunachalam Kasi had a discussion with Puan Rohani Binti Ismail,
the Supervising Judge of the KL Subordinate Courts. The discussion was mainly
in respect of the filing of JIDs.
Pupils Introduction
Session
Organised by the Pupils
Welfare Committee, the introduction session for November was held on 13
November 2013. The session, attended by 87 pupils,
was led by Vince Chong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian
Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the Kuala
Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during
their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input
and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session
were pupils having to handle despatch work; former pupils who did not withdraw
their petition papers resulting in delays in the filing of petition papers by
new pupils; and the transport claims for Court is insufficient in comparison to
the market rate for claims.
Luncheon: Taste of the
Bar III
Spearheaded
by the Pupils Welfare Committee (“PWC”), the Young Lawyers Committee and PWC
organised the second meet and greet informal lunch event for the term dubbed,
“The Luncheon: A Taste of the Bar III” at Aria Restaurant, Bukit Damansara, on
Saturday, 16 November 2013 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Luncheon provided an
excellent platform and avenue for budding lawyers and pupils-in-chambers to
dine with senior members of the Bar. The Luncheon saw a total number of 39 members
of the Bar attending the event with participation from young lawyers and
pupils-in-chambers, senior members and PWC members. Click here

PDC Seminar on Summary
Judgment
Lau Mark Chi-Ming from
Messrs Sreenevasan Young presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 2:30 pm on 19 November 2013. The seminar was attended by 50
participants. The seminar covered: "Order 14: Boon or Bane?",
"Threshold objections", "Substantive objections",
"Other alternatives", "Points of law/Construction of
Documents" and "Case examples".

PWC Pupils Workshop on
Conveyancing
The Pupils Welfare Committee organised
a conveyancing workshop specifically for pupils on 20 November 2013 covering
the following areas: “Overview of the Conveyancing Process”, “Essential Clauses
found in a Sale & Purchase Agreement”, “How to fill up the relevant NLC
Forms” and “Practical Pointers for the conveyancing lawyer”. 53 pupils attended
the workshop which was conducted by Michael Leow Yon Meng

Negotiation Skills for Leaders
The Corporate and
Conveyancing Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly
presented the seminar by Amir Bahari on 22 November 2013 at 3:00 pm at the KL
Bar Auditorium. This seminar was attended by 15 participants. The seminar
covered the following areas: "Role
play", "Traits of a decision maker", "Style of decision
maker", "Reaction table and decision tree", "Blueprinting
your decision", "Categorising your decision" and "Creating
the resourceful environment".

Practice Management Course
The YLC organised the
Legal Practice Management Course on 25 November 2013 at the KL Bar Auditorium
and it was attended by 61 participants. The topics and speakers for the course
were “Managing your Practice” by Fahri Azzat; “Conveyancing Module” by Jeremiah
R Gurusamy; “Everyday Problems Faced in Litigation” by Yudistra Darma Dorai and
Sashiraj Uthrapathy; “Corporate Module” by Munirah Maarof and Muhammad Zukhairi;
“Client Management” by Choo Dee Wei; “Stress Management” by Khaizan Sharizad;

IT Conference on
Startups and Business Law
The Information
Technology and Publications Committee organised a one-day Conference on 26
November 2013 at the KL Bar Auditorium which was attended by 53 participants.

your Intellectual Property and Protecting your Rights” by Janet Toh Yoong San

to Tears: Top 9 Legal Issues in Social Media
Suaran Singh Sidhu from
Messrs Suaran & Sankey presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 29 November 2013. The seminar was attended by 41 participants.
The seminar covered the following areas: “Defamation”, “the new amendment to the Evidence Act”, “Privacy
of your privates” and “Crackdown at the work place”.
KL Bar Night - 80’s Glam
Rock
Renamed
“KL Bar Night”, this annual social event of the Kuala Lumpur Bar was again
hosted at one of the hottest establishments in town, Cristallo, Luna in Pacific
Regency Hotel Suites, KH Tower. More than 300 guests including former Bar
Presidents and former Kuala Lumpur Bar Chairmen attended the event. The guests
were treated to a delectable buffet spread as well as a variety of canapés,
coupled with free flow of selected drinks, with the cool ambience of the
venue’s signature pool and the KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers for backdrop.
They were also entertained by a live band that played up to the night’s theme,
“80’s Glam Rock” and performances by our very own members of the Bar. Many of
our members turned up dressed to the theme but no one could beat our MC for the
night, Dee Wei, who was glammed up in a truly 80’s Glam Rock style. Click here
