MALAYSIAN BAR INTERSTATE BAR GAMES 2013 - 24 August and 7 September 2013

The Kuala Lumpur Bar hosted the Malaysian Bar Interstate Bar Games (IBG) 2013 on 24 August and 7 September 2013. The sports played were football, badminton, netball, volleyball and golf. The Kuala Lumpur Bar emerged as the Overall Champion winning three out of the five sports played namely, netball, volleyball and badminton.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee and the KL Bar Sports & Recreation Committee extend their thanks to all the State Bar captains, participants, volunteers and members whose combined effort made the IBG 2013 a success.

24 August 2013 - Stadium Panasonic Matsushita, Shah Alam

FOOTBALL

Participating Teams:
Group A: Selangor Bar, Kuala Lumpur Bar 1, Kedah Bar, Malacca Bar and Johore Bar
Group B: Kelantan Bar, Terengganu Bar, Penang Bar and Kuala Lumpur Bar 2

Football traditionally gathers the most interest and the highest number of participants at the IBG. This year was no different.

The condition of the pitches at the Stadium has deteriorated over the last two years but the teams went about their games without any real complaint. The games were played in good spirit with young and old(er) lawyers alike displaying their skills. Many were old friends from across the states. Having stadium seats for the players to watch other teams in action and a PA system to call out the matches and play music added to the atmosphere. The volunteers ably assisted in ensuring a smooth running of this event.

On the pitch, Selangor Bar showed their might by regaining the title of Champions which they had lost to the Kelantan Bar at the last IBG. The two Kuala Lumpur Bar teams played well with Kuala Lumpur Bar 1 reaching the final only to lose to a fresher Selangor Bar team. Johore Bar and Terengganu Bar were the losing semi-finalists but played with good teamwork throughout.

BADMINTON

Participating Teams:
Team Event: Kuala Lumpur Bar, Penang Bar, Selangor Bar, Kelantan Bar and Terengganu Bar
Ladies Doubles Event: Kuala Lumpur Bar, Penang Bar, Selangor Bar and Terengganu Bar

This year the tournament was divided into two categories; the Team Event comprising five doubles and the Ladies Doubles Event. The idea behind having a separate Ladies Doubles competition, which was a first, was to unearth talent. An estimated record 90 people turned up for this event, some to participate and others to support their favourite teams and players.

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Team and Ladies Doubles pair amassed the most wins to emerge as Champions in their respective categories. Penang Bar came in second in the Team Event after a hard fought tournament with nail biting encounters against Selangor Bar and Kelantan Bar. Selangor Bar settled for third place whilst the fourth and fifth places went to Kelantan Bar and Terengganu Bar respectively.

This event provided a fun and friendly sporting environment. Players from different states were able to mingle around and make new friends. Some had taken the opportunity to catch up with old friends and reminisce about their early practising days and past tournaments. It was extremely pleasant to see the players from the different participating states volunteering as linesmen or umpires and assisting the organisers in any way they could.

The Convenor conveys his thanks to K. Mohan, the Malaysian Bar Sports Committee Co-Chair, for providing valuable guidance throughout the tournament.

VOLLEYBALL

Participating Teams:  Kuala Lumpur Bar, Selangor Bar and Terengganu Bar

The players were thankful to be playing on a good indoor court this year. Kuala Lumpur Bar was especially raring to go as the team had been undergoing regular training prior to the IBG.

The first match saw Kuala Lumpur Bar defeating Terengganu Bar two sets to nil. Selangor Bar then played Terengganu Bar. Selangor Bar initially had a shortage of players and in true sportsmanship spirit, some members/supporters from the Kuala Lumpur Bar and Penang Bar joined in to make up the numbers for Selangor Bar. Selangor Bar then beat Terengganu Bar also with a score of 2-0.

The final match was a showdown between Kuala Lumpur Bar and Selangor Bar and those matches have been close over the years.

This time, Kuala Lumpur Bar achieved victory after beating Selangor Bar in straight sets and were crowned Champions. It was noteworthy that Selangor Bar made way for Terengganu Bar to take the medals for runners-up as a gesture of appreciation for Terengganu Bar’s participation as well as in acknowledgement of the fact that several of the players in the Selangor Bar team were actually Kuala Lumpur Bar members.

This year’s golf tournament attracted 60 people and what was most encouraging was to see members from the East Coast taking part.
