PDC Seminar on Drafting Contracts 101
Jeremiah R. Gurusamy from Messrs
Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 2:30pm on 3 September 2013. The seminar was attended by 32
participants. The seminar covered the following areas: "Dealing with
Compliance & Regulatory issues", "Scoping the Transaction",
"Drafting Techniques", "Understanding Key Provisions",
"Boiler Plate Clauses" and "Common Mistakes & Pitfalls".

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare
Committee, the introduction session for September was held on 4 September 2013.
The session, attended by 79 pupils, was led by Vince
Chong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL
Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and the
highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise
issues and problems faced by them during their pupillage period and members of
the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible solutions. Amongst the
issues raised by the pupils at this session were rude staff at the Petition for
Admission Registry of the RKKK Courts and problems with the said Registry.
PDC Seminar on Till the Cows Come
Home: How to Milk the Most from a Licensing Deal
Suaran Singh from Messrs Suaran &
Sankey presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00pm
on 5 September 2013. The seminar was attended by 19 participants. The seminar
focused on the problems that arise in Licensing deals, the missed and hidden
opportunities and how best to structure a good deal.

KL Bar Monthly Social Get-together
The September Social Get-together was
held at BAR 1981, Solaris Publika on 6 September 2013. About 50 lawyers turned
up for this event which started at 7:30pm. This time around, a friendly pool
competition was held and it was won by Vivek. Everyone had a great time and
only parted at 1:00am.

Interstate Bar Games - Golf
The above Golf Tournament, which was
part of the Interstate Bar Games hosted by the KL Bar in August 2013, was held
at Staffield Country Resort, Mantin on 7 September 2013. 60 members of the Bar
from the States of Johor, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Terengganu and
Kuala Lumpur participated in the tournament. It was most encouraging to see
members from the East Coast taking part. Selangor Bar played well. Not only did
they emerged as the Overall Champion but their players also swept all the
individual and novelty prizes. Kuala Lumpur Bar came in 2nd with the
Negeri Sembilan Bar taking the 3rd spot.

PWC Pupils Workshop on Legal Research
The
KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a legal research workshop
specifically for pupils on 11 September 2013 focusing primarily on the "Alternative
Online Legal Research", "Using Apps for Your Practice" and
"Building an e-Library." 35 pupils attended the workshop which was
conducted by Foong Cheng Leong.

PDC Seminar on Termination of Employment

Auditorium at 2:30pm on 12 September 2013. The seminar was attended by 25
participants. The seminar covered the following areas: "Poor
Performance", "Misconduct", "Constructive Dismissal"
and "Redundancy".
Malaysiaku – Celebrating 50 Years of
Malaysia Festival
The Malaysian Centre for
Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) (in collaboration with LB Training
and supported by the Bar Council Constitutional Law Committee, Kuala Lumpur Bar
Committee, National Young Lawyers Committee and BFM) commemorated the 50th
anniversary of the formation of Malaysia with a forum entitled, “Fifty Years of
Democracy: Has It Weakened or Strengthened Our Federal Constitution”. The event was part of the Malaysiaku -
Celebrating 50 Years of Malaysia Festival. The forum featured Dr. Azmi Sharom,
Associate Professor of Law, University of Malaya; Tommy Thomas, Advocate and
Solicitor, High Court of Malaya; and Wan Saiful Wan Jan, CEO of IDEAS; and was
moderated by Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Meeting with the Wilayah Land Office
The meeting was held at 10:00am at the
Wilayah Land Office. The Bar was represented by members from the KL Bar
Corporate & Conveyancing Practice Committee, Bar Council Conveyancing
Committee and Selangor Bar Conveyancing & SRE Sub-committee. Many issues
were discussed at the meeting, such as difficulties faced by practitioners
relating to strata titles, frequent delays in other transactions at the land
registry, the new administration orders in respect of stamp certificate, etc.
The Wilayah Land Office had explained that the current delays was due to the
recent transfer of seven registrars and the newly appointed registrars were
currently undergoing training. We were also informed that strata titles
transactions are still being done manually, despite the abundant number of
daily presentations.

Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly presented a
seminar by Amir Bahari on 18 September 2013 at 3:00 pm at the KL Bar
Auditorium. This seminar was attended by 19 participants. The seminar covered
the following areas "Role Play", "The anatomy of negotiator’s
mind", "3 opening strategies", "3 middle strategies",
"3 ending strategies", "5 strategies to seal the deal" and
"5 dynamics that can work in your favour".

PDC Seminar on Marriage, Divorce ad
Polygamy under Federal Territories Syariah Laws
Amir Bahari from Messrs Bahari &
Bahari presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm
on 20 September 2013. The seminar was attended by 14 participants. The seminar
covered the following areas: "procedure of syariah
marriage", "registration of syariah marriage", "procedure
of divorce", "types of divorce" and "rights and obligations
after divorce".

PWC Trip to Broga Hill
The inaugural trip to Broga Hill,
Semenyih organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee was a success with 21
participants. The group left as early at 4:30am from McDonald’s at Jalan
Ma’arof in order to catch the sunrise and indeed they did. With the brilliant weather, there was no rain
and no overshadowing clouds, the group had an unobstructed perfect view of the
sunrise. They climbed all 3 peaks and caught some stellar view of jets and
bomber planes that flew past… the jets and bomber planes were part of the
celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Armed Forces Day at Dataran Merdeka.
After their descent, the group had some best ever cool refreshing coconut
drinks at the bottom of the Hill. They then proceeded to Kajang for satay. A

YLC Seminar on Opinion Writing
Mariette Peters from Messrs Zulrafique
& Partners presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at
3.00pm on 24 September 2013. The seminar was attended by 85 participants. The
seminar covered the following areas: "Are you writing a
legal opinion or a legal thesis?", "Who is the reader of the
opinion?", "Is your opinion littered with legal jargon/ legalese?
Does that always make it more impressive?", "Is quantity always
quality? Does a 40-page opinion have more substance than a 4- page
advice?" and "How do you keep an opinion concise while ensuring that
the deliverable meets the client's requirements".

The KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing
Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly presented a
seminar by 2 officers from the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri, Mumahad Sazali Bin
Sudin and Nazli Azim Bin Yahya on 25 September 2013 at 3:00pm at the KL Bar
Auditorium. This seminar was attended by 115 participants.

Firdaus Husni from Messrs Chooi and
Co. presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm on 27
September 2013. The seminar was attended by 76 participants. The seminar covered the following
areas: "A brief outline of the Federal Constitution", "Recent
Constitutional Issues in Malaysia" and "Applying and Interpreting the
Constitution".
