PDC Seminar on The Torrens System and
Equitable Principles
SY Kok presented the seminar which was
held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 2 July 2013. The seminar was
attended by 69 participants. The seminar covered
the following areas "What are the different types of interests in
land?", "Can contractual rights be protected?", "Does a
purchaser need to look behind the register to discover ‘hidden’ rights and
interests?", "What is the role of caveats within the Torrens
system?" and "How do civil law legislation in various jurisdictions
affect the reception of common law and equitable principles to land
matters?".

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare
Committee, the introduction session for July was held on 3 July 2013. The
session, attended by 60 pupils, was led by Ravin Singh. Pupils were briefed on
the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar
Council and the KL Bar Committee and the highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It
included a session for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during
their pupillage period and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input
and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session
were, bad experiences at the RKKK registry and with the court staff.

Skills
The KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing
Practice Committee and Professional Development Committee jointly presented a
seminar by Amir Bahari on 5 July 2013 at 3:00 pm at the KL Bar Auditorium. This
seminar was attended by 21 participants. The seminar covered the following
areas “Role Play", "The concept, perspective and dimensions of
Negotiation", "Negotiation and Relationship", "The Dynamics
of Negotiation", "6 phases of Negotiation", "5 do’s when
entering negotiation" and "5 don’ts in negotiation".

1st KL Bar Monthly Social Get-together
The KL Bar Monthly Social Get-together
was revived after a 5-year hiatus! To be held on the first Friday of every
month, the idea was to have a fixed day and place for members of the Bar to
meet, socialise and build camaraderieship. The first of these get-togethers was
held on Friday, 5 July 2013 at D'Balcony @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas. Close to
50 lawyers including the Chairman of the KL Bar attended this event which
started at 8:00pm and went on until 1:00am. The young lawyers who were present
took the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of Yeoh Tung Seng, one of the
Deputy Chairpersons of the KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee.

PDC Seminar on Some Recent
Developments In English Courts: Good Faith, Bad Directors and Security for
Costs
Paul Emerson from the Lamb Chambers presented
the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 8 July 2013.
The seminar was attended by 23 participants. The
Seminar discussed recent developments in the jurisprudence with regard to claims
against directors who breach their fiduciary duties, implying terms of good faith
into commercial contracts and ordering security for costs outside CPR 25.

Agreements: Practical Tips on Drafting

& Wong presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 4:00
pm on 9 July 2013. The seminar was attended by 120 participants. The seminar
covered the following areas "Standard boiler plate clauses for a sale and
purchase agreement", "To explain the various clauses that are in a
sale and purchase agreement", "The difference in drafting for
properties with and without individual title", "Any potential
pitfalls to look out when drafting" and "Understanding your
responsibilities as a solicitor in a sale and purchase transaction".

PWC Workshop on Criminal Litigation
The
KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised a criminal litigation workshop
specifically for pupils on 10 July 2013 by Amrit Pal Singh focusing primarily
on the practical aspects of handling a criminal brief covering the following
areas, "Client Interview", "Mitigation", "Bail
Application" and the "Trial Process". 14
participants attended the workshop.

Dragon Boating for 2013 was held on 14 July 2013 at the Putrajaya Maritime
Centre at 9:00 am. It proved to be an
invaluable experience for those who attended the workshop.

Free PDC Talk on Political Philosophy:
Democracy in Malaysia
Shaun Tan presented the talk which was
held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3:00 pm on 17 July 2013. The workshop was
attended by 50 participants. The talk traced the evolution of democracy, from
its inception in ancient Athens to the present day. It seeks to provoke crucial
questions: What do we mean when we use the term ‘democracy’? How does democracy
compare with other political systems? How does democracy function in a country
as religiously and ethnically diverse as Malaysia?

Introductory Session to the Legal Profession for Law Undergraduates
The
Young Lawyers Committee organised a 3rd Introductory Session to the
Legal Profession for Law Undergraduates to provide them with an insight into
the legal profession. The session was held at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium
at the Bar Council from 9.15am to 4.00pm on 27 July 2013. The following topics
were presented, “History, Role and Relevance of the Malaysian Bar” by Richard
Wee, “S.42 LPA – The Answer to Life, Universe and Everything” by Edmond Bon Tai
Soon, “Crossroads – Your Options after Graduation” by Farhan Read, Cyril,
Joanne Leong and Eu Zhiyi and “Myths and Realities of Practice” by H.R.
Dipendra. 55 participants from KDU University College, HELP University, UUM,
IIUM and Taylors College attended the session.
