KLYLC-MCCHR Public Interest Litigation
Workshop
The
KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) established a Public Interest Litigation
Unit (PILU) in association with the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and
Human Rights (MCCHR). In line with this, a series of formal workshops have been
organised for members of PILU on the basics of strategic public interest
litigation, free of charge, to prepare interested young lawyers to handle the
demands of such cases and to encourage the use of strategic litigation to
promote human rights. The last session for the term was held on 5 January 2013
from 09.30am to 2.30pm at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium. The workshop was
attended by 19 participants who were trained by New Sin Yew, Kirsty Lim and

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised
by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for January
was held on 8 January 2013. The session, attended by 97 pupils, was led by Ravin
Singh and Jason Kong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar
and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee
and highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for pupils to raise
issues and problems faced by them during their period of pupillage and the
Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide input and possible
solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this session were, the
attitude of the staff at the RKKK’s Petition for Admission Registry, low
allowance, exorbitant photocopying charges imposed at the Bar Council Library
and issues pertaining to the Land Office.

PDC Seminar on The Domestic Violence Act:
Perspectives from a Family Law Practitioner

Tan Lay Ean from Messrs Tan Practice presented the seminar which was held at
the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm on 9 January 2013. The seminar was attended by 18 participants. The
seminar covered the following areas: "Key areas in the DVA and the recent
amendments", "Representing clients in the criminal justice
system", "Examining a few of the new provisions in the Criminal
Procedure Code" and "Dealing with domestic violence in matrimonial
proceedings".

PDC Seminar on Corporate Litigator`s WMDs:
Winding-up, Minority Oppression and Derivative Action

Shih from Messrs Skrine presented the seminar which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 3.00pm on 10 January 2013. The seminar was attended by 118 participants. The
seminar covered the following areas: "The Corporate Litigator’s
Toolkit", "Foss v Harbottle: The two-headed dragon", "The
WMDs: Winding-up, Minority Oppression and Derivative Action",
"Importance of Interim Remedies", "The Side Arms: Convening Meetings
and Access to Records", "Arbitration and Shareholder Disputes: Never
the Twain Shall Meet?", and "Case studies: 50/50 Split, the Matriarch
Company, the 24-hour Injunction, the Tale of Lazarus, Lazarus 2.0”.

Kuala Lumpur/Selangor Bar Games for the
Lall Singh Muker Challenge Trophy - 12th Series
This year’s Series was hosted by the Selangor Bar. The
Series, held on 11 and 12 January 2013, saw both sides winning 3 games each and
were declared joint Champions. KL Bar won at netball, volleyball and darts
whilst Selangor Bar emerged victorious in badminton, golf and snooker. Both
drew at soccer. The End-of-Games Dinner and Prize-Giving was well

Introductory Workshop to Dragon Boating
The
1st Introductory Workshop to Dragon boating for 2013, under the auspices of the
KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee and Social, Arts and Culture Committee, was held
on 13 January 2013 at the Putrajaya Maritime Centre at 9.00am. Those who
attended the workshop had a great experience.

A Talk on Understanding the Anti-Money
Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act (Act 613)
The
KL Bar Corporate and Conveyancing Practice Committee had successfully organised
the above talk which was held on 16 January 2013 from 3.00pm to 5.30pm at the
KL Bar Auditorium. The talk was presented by 2 speakers; Encik Mohamad Johan
Bin Mohd Shahar on behalf of Puan Fairuzana Binti Mohd Pilus of Bank Negara
Malaysia and our very own member of the Bar, Dato’ Jahaberdeen Bin Mohamad
Yunoos. The Talk received an
overwhelming response with 131 participants including non-members from various
financial institutions. The comments received from the floor after the talk
were very positive.

KLYLC Explore Race
The KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) organised its
inaugural KLYLC Explore Race which was held on Saturday, 19 January 2013 commencing
at 10.00am. Each team had to pay RM200 as registration fee. We had 12 teams
competing in the race and the winning team and runners-up won RM1000 and RM500
respectively. There were 6 check points namely Masjid India (Mosque), St.
John's Church, Court Hill Ganesh Temple, China Town, Central
Market, Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad and all were within walking distance.

Conveyancing Workshop for Pupils
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee (PWC) organised a Conveyancing
Workshop specifically for pupils on 22 January 2013. Presented by Michael Leow
Yon Meng, the workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a
conveyancing brief, covering the following areas: "Overview of the
Conveyancing Process", "Essential clauses found in a Sale &
Purchase Agreement", "How to fill up the relevant NLC Forms" and
"Practical Pointers for the conveyancing lawyer". 50 pupils attended
the workshop.

the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm on 23 January 2013. This free seminar was
attended by 112 participants. The seminar covered the following areas: “Building rapport with audience",
"Opening with a Wow", "Pulsing and connecting with your
audience", "Fine tuning the dynamics of your audience",
"Making adult learning psychology work for you", "Monetising
your speaking talent" and "Getting remembered for life".

PDC Seminar on An Introduction to
Arbitration
Choon
Hon Leng from Messrs Raja, Darryl and Loh presented the seminar which was held
at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm on 30 January 2013. The seminar was attended
by 89 participants.
The seminar covered the following areas: "How does arbitration
work?", "When and why do you go for arbitration?", "Drafting
an arbitration clause", "Commencing an arbitration",
"Conducting an arbitration" and "Enforcing and challenging an
arbitral award".
