22nd Annual Sports Carnival -
RSC v KL Bar
The 22nd Annual Sports Carnival
between the KL Bar and Royal Selangor Club (RSC) for the YA Tan Sri Dato’ Harun
Hashim Challenge Trophy was held on 01 and 03 November 2012. The games played were cricket, tennis,
soccer, hockey, badminton and pool/snooker. The KL Bar beat RSC 1-0,
winning at badminton but they drew at cricket, tennis, soccer, hockey
and pool/snooker to become the overall champion. The End-of-Games and
Prize-Giving Dinner was well attended.

KLYLC-MCCHR Public Interest Litigation
Workshop
The
KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) established a Public Interest Litigation
Unit (PILU) in association with the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and
Human Rights (MCCHR). In line with this, a series of formal workshops have been
organised for members of PILU on the basics of strategic public interest
litigation, free of charge, to prepare interested young lawyers to handle the
demands of such cases and to encourage the use of strategic litigation to
promote human rights. The third session was held on 03 November 2012 from
10.00am to 2.00pm at the KL Bar Auditorium. The workshop was attended by 23
participants who were trained by Honey Tan Lay Ean, Aston Philip Paiva and

PDC Seminar on Drafting Commercial
Contracts 101
Jeremiah
R. Gurusamy from Messrs Arianti Dipendra Jeremiah presented the seminar which
was held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm. Ken Tan Yong Xu moderated the
seminar which was attended by 124 participants. The seminar covered the
following areas, "Dealing with Compliance & Regulatory issues",
"Scoping the Transaction", "Drafting Techniques", "Understanding
Key Provisions", "Boiler Plate Clauses" and "Common
Mistakes & Pitfalls".

Pupils Introduction Session
Organised
by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for November
was held on 07 November 2012. The session, attended by 76 pupils, was led by Harleen
Kaur (Leena) and Jason Kong. Pupils were briefed on the structure of the
Malaysian Bar and the KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL
Bar Committee and highlights of the Malaysian Bar. It included a session for
pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of
pupillage and the Chairman and members of the KLBC were on hand to provide
input and possible solutions. Amongst the issues raised by the pupils at this
session were rude court staff, QMS, BM Exemption Certificate and locus.

CPC/PDC/BCCLC Workshop on the Art of
Criminal Cross Examination
The
KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee together with the Professional Development
Committee and the Bar Council Criminal Law Committee jointly presented the said
Workshop as one of its programmes to encourage more lawyers to practise
Criminal Litigation. Athimulan Muruthiah, a senior criminal law practitioner
from Penang presented the workshop which was held
at the KL Bar Auditorium from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
The workshop was moderated by Amrit Pal Singh and assisted by Rajpal
Singh. The workshop was attended by 56 participants. Click here to view the

PAC/PDC Talk on Sexual Harassment
Meera
Samanther of the Association of Women Lawyers (AWL) and Betty Yeoh of All
Women’s Action Society (AWAM) presented the talk which was held at the KL Bar
Auditorium at 5.00pm. This “free talk”, moderated by Goh Siu Lin, was attended
by 74 participants.

Projecting a Professional Image - A
Workshop conducted by Bobbi Brown (2nd Session)
The KL
Bar Practitioners' Affairs Committee organised a 2nd session of the image and
grooming workshop conducted by Bobbi Brown Cosmetics for women lawyers on 24
November 2012 at 10.00am at Bobbi Brown’s Training Room, Mid Valley
Megamall. The workshop focused on the
importance of projecting a professional image with tips on how to apply
appropriate make-up for a professional look (day and night). 15 participants
attended the Workshop.

Young Lawyers’ Training entitled “The Fundamentals of International Legal
Business Practice”
The KLBC sponsored 11 young lawyers to attend the Young
Lawyers’ Training entitled “The Fundamentals of International Legal Business
Practice” jointly organised by Bar Council and the International Bar
Association (“IBA”) in conjunction with the 3rd Asia Pacific Regional
Conference which took place in Kuala
Lumpur . The Training was held on 28 November 2012 at
the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium.

PWC/CPC Pupils Workshop on Criminal
Litigation
The KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee together with the
Criminal Practice Committee organised a criminal litigation workshop
specifically for pupils on 28 November 2012. Conducted by Amrit Pal Singh, the
workshop focused primarily on the practical aspects of handling a criminal
brief covering the following areas, "Client Interview",
"Mitigation", "Bail Application" and "Trial
Process". 16 participants attended the workshop.

PAC Mentoring Circle Dinner
The
KL Bar Practitioners’ Affairs Committee (PAC) launched its Mentoring Circle
Programme by organising an Inaugural Mentoring Circle Dinner on 28 November
2012 at Chef & Brew at 7.00pm. The objective of the programme was inter
alia, to create an informal group where professional, social guidance and
support from senior members of the Bar may be given to young practitioners on
areas of concern. The dinner was attended by 17 participants.

ITCC/RamRais & Partners Dialogue
Session on the Benefits of Alternative Dispute Resolution for IP and IT
Disputes
The
KL Bar Information Technology and Communications Committee together with Messrs
RamRais and Partners presented the dialogue session by Erik Wilbers, the
Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and
Mediation Center (WIPO) at the KL Bar Auditorium on 29 November 2012 from
10.30am. to 12.00pm. Erik Wilbers was
joined by Leandro Emilio Toscano, the Representative of the WIPO Arbitration
and Mediation Centre in Singapore .
The Dialogue session covered the following areas, “An Introduction to WIPO and
the Mediation Centre”, “WIPO ADR Options”, “WIPO Model Clause Examples”, “WIPO
Case Management”, “WIPO Types of Disputes” and “Examples of WIPO Mediation and
WIPO Arbitration”. Foong Cheng Leong moderated the Dialogue session which was
