Pupils Introduction Session
Organised
by the KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee, the introduction session for July was
held on 4 July 2012. The session, attended by 90 pupils, was led by Harleen
Kaur (Leena). Pupils were briefed on the structure of the Malaysian Bar and the
KL Bar, the election to both the Bar Council and the KL Bar Committee and
highlights of the Malaysian Bar. The introduction session included a session
for pupils to raise issues and problems faced by them during their period of
pupillage and also to come up with possible solutions. The issues raised and
possible solutions suggested by the pupils at this session were:

CPC/PDC Talk on Criminal Advocacy from the
Prosecutors Perspective
The KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee together with the
Professional Development Committee presented the Talk as one of its programmes
to encourage more lawyers to practice Criminal Litigation. Shamsul Bin Sulaiman
from Messrs Edlin Ghazaly & Associates presented the Talk which was held at
the KL Bar Auditorium at 3.00pm. The event was attended by 44 participants. The
Talk covered the following areas, "Powers of the Public Prosecutor",
"Understanding the hierarchy of the PP's Office", "Workflow and
how decisions are made", "The Prosecutors' mindset", "How
to be effective as a defence
counsel vis-a-vis the prosecutor" and "What I have learnt from being
across the divide".

PWC Visit to the Palace of Justice
The
KL Bar Pupils Welfare Committee organised its inaugural visit to the Palace of Justice Japan participated in this visit
which was held on Friday, 6 July 2012. All pupils gathered outside Wisma
Kraftangan (where the KL Bar Secretariat is located on the 8th floor) from as
early as 7.30am and enjoyed a light breakfast at the neighbouring restaurant.
Our entourage departed from Wisma Krafttangan at 8.15am by coach and arrived at
the Palace of Justice

PDC Seminar on Islamic Wills III (Advanced)
Amir
Bahari from Messrs Bahari & Bahari presented the seminar which was held at
the KL Bar Auditorium at 10.00am. The seminar was attended by 46 participants.
The seminar covered the following areas, "Key differences between
Wasiyyah, Wisoyah & Wakaf", "Who can prepare the Will",
"Witnessing of the Will", "Probate processes", "Role
of PERWARISAN", "Effective estate planning tools" and
"Sample of Islamic Advance Will".

PDC Seminar on Legal Due Diligence in
Mergers and Acquisitions
Kelvin
Loh Hsien Han from Messrs Shook Lin and Bok presented the seminar which was
held at the KL Bar Auditorium at 2.30pm. The seminar was attended by 80
participants. The seminar covered areas in “Transactional Due Diligence” and “Compliance
Due Diligence” including, "Purposes of a transactional due diligence,
developing a strategy and planning", "Executing a transactional due
diligence - Case Studies", "Due diligence in acquisition of minority
stakes", "Defensive due diligence", "Purposes of a
compliance due diligence and penalties under the law", "Formation of
a due diligence working group and roles of each member" and "Standards
of a due diligence".

KLYLC-MCCHR Public Interest Litigation
Workshop
The
KL Bar Young Lawyers Committee (KLYLC) established a Public Interest Litigation
Unit (PILU) in association with the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human
Rights (MCCHR). In line with this, a series of formal workshops have been
organised for members of PILU on the basics of strategic public interest
litigation, free of charge, to prepare interested young lawyers to handle the
demands of such cases and to encourage the use of strategic litigation to
promote human rights. The first session was held on 7 July 2012 at the KL Bar
Auditorium from 10.00am to 2.00pm. The workshop was attended by 47 participants

Malaysian Bar Interstate Golf Tournament
2012
The
Malaysian Bar Interstate Golf Tournament 2012 was held in Malacca at Tiara Golf
Resort on 7 July 2012. The KL Bar Sports Committee sent a team of 9 players to
participate in the said Tournament. This year’s Tournament attracted
participation from 8 State Bars - Kuala Lumpur ,
Johor, Selangor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang

Visit of the Seoul
The President of the Seoul Bar Association, Oh Wook-Hwan and
2 others, Yoon Jong-Suk (Auditor) and Choi Young-Ho (Assistant Manager) paid a
social visit on the KLBC at the Bar Council office on 12 July 2012 at 9.30am.
Chairman of the KL Bar Brendan Navin Siva, Honorary Secretary Ravin Singh, KLBC
members Jeremiah Gurusamy, Roger Chan, Jason Kong and Executive Secretary Mary
Tan were at hand to meet the delegation. They were joined by Christopher Leong,
Vice President of the Malaysian Bar and Rajen Devaraj, CEO of the Bar Council.
There was a casual exchange of information on the roles of each Institution and
views on a number of issues such as the issue of human rights, peaceful
assemblies, globalisation of the legal profession, electronic filing, etc. It
was a short meeting as the delegation had to catch a flight to Penang the same afternoon to attend the Lawasia Family
Law Conference.

Affairs Committee organised an image and grooming workshop conducted by Bobbi
Brown Cosmetics for women lawyers on 21 July 2012 at 10.00am at Bobbi Brown’s
Training Room, Mid Valley Megamall. The
workshop focused on the importance of projecting a professional image with tips
on how to apply appropriate make-up for a professional look (day and night). 21
