Proving the perception wrong, the Kuala Lumpur Bar Young Lawyers Committee (“KLYLC”) successfully organised the Charity Nite 2009 on 3rd July 2009. Aptly themed as “Legally Talented”, the event was held at Modestos (Capsquare) and saw record sales of 829 tickets. From bands to dances and even pole-dancing, the 8 finalists this year certainly are a good mix of differing talents. The event also saw the raising of donations via sales of cupcakes handmade by Elaine. Part of the proceeds from the night would be donated to Rumah Warga Emas NASCOM in Setapak, an organisation providing shelter and care for the elderly who are destitute.

The lawyers started to stream in at 7.00pm and by 8.00pm, the venue was sardine-packed with enthusiastic crowds. The event finally started at 8.10pm with the opening act by Unabashed, featuring our very own former KL Bar Idol, Chryshantini Florence Niles.

The 8 finalists namely, ”Screen”, Michael Jackson Tribute, Joseph & Cara, Sweet N Salty, Freak “Shearn”ers, Bu Bu Cha Cha, The Mismatched and The PoliCious took the stage by storm with their entertaining and lively performances, keeping the crowd to their feet. Beautifully decorated banners and placards supporting each of the participants added to the carnival like atmosphere in the venue. Unabashed continued to entertain the crowd with their songs during the break. Throughout this time, the special donation boxes for each finalist were carried around the venue, in order for the audience to vote for their favourite participant by donating into these boxes.

Alas, after the final performance by Unabashed, it was then time to announce the winners of “Legally Talented”. Without a shadow of doubt, all the participants were excellent and thrilled the crowd with their songs and dances. The Mismatched, led by its lead singer, Nor Kamilah Shahidan, with the songs ‘Love Song – Sara Barrailles’ and ‘Beautiful – A-kon’, came in as 2nd runner-up.

One of the crowd favourites, Sweet N Salty, backed with their ever so supportive friends, charmed everyone with the wonderful serenade of ‘Hot & Cold’ and a medley of ‘Stand by me’ and ‘Beautiful Girl’.

However, Sweet N Salty came in as 1st runner-up, edged by Bu Bu Cha Cha, who emerged as the winner of ‘Legally Talented’ 2009! Mesmerising the crowd with her well-choreographed dance moves, the announcement of the winner being Bu Bu Cha Cha was greeted with deafening screams and cheers of support, coupled with thunderous applause.

The chairman of the KLYLC, Lai Chee Hoe presented the trophies and certificates to the winners and participants. Adding spice to the show and in the name of charity, the KL Bar Chairman, Anand Ponnudurai sportingly agreed to perform a dance in front of the screaming crowd – for more donations.

Proving that Malaysians are charitable at heart irrespective of good times or bad, the event managed to raise approximately RM45,000! The KLYLC wishes to thank all those who helped make Charity Nite 2009 a runaway success. The support, assistance and generous contributions from the lawyers, KLBC staff and the law firms only served to fortify the belief that the KL Bar always looks out for those in need. Thank you also to Mah Sing Group Berhad for kindly sponsoring the event. No doubt, their participation only served to enhance the Charity Nite goodwill.
