Smashed at Court

On Saturday, 18th April 2009, 18 men met at the Court to smash their way through. Another 6 men also were at Court to cross swords.

All geared up, more than 25 players turn up for KL Bar’s Badminton Carnival 2009 at the Badminton Stadium at Cheras that day.

Unfortunately there was insufficient entries to have a Ladies Double’s tournament, though a few ladies were present that day. Hopefully KL Bar can attract more lady players.

The Carnival itself was well received by the lawyers. Matches were competitive and interesting, but more importantly played in spirit of fairness and in proper sporting attitude.

The Men’s singles tourney, of 6 players, were divided into 2 groups, with players playing 2 matches each. The winner of each group advanced to the final.

The Doubles tournament was hotly contested with many quality games. 9 pairs fought it out in 3 groups, and each group winner advanced to the final round of 3 pairs. There, the 3 finalists played each other again, with the pair finishing top, winning the tournament.

In the end, the Men’s Singles was won by Mohd Nassir Ibrahim, defeating Ng Chin Chai 25 - 16 (One set, winner at 25 points format)

The Men’s doubles was won after a titanic match between Ng Chin Chai & Law How Chong and Jason a/l Gopal & Mohd Nassir Ibrahim, with Ng and Law overcoming their younger opponents 18-21, 21-18, 21-19. Despite it being a round robin system, the final match between the above 2 pairs, turned out to be the decider. In 3rd place were the pairing of Rodzim & Manor.

There were already calls for KL Bar to organize more Badminton Carnivals. With proper planning and maybe with some time in hand, the Committee may just organize one more Carnival before the term ends.

We also wish to thank AI Nathan, Convener for Badminton in the Malaysian Bar, and also Deputy President of Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association; who had assisted KL Bar with the venue of the Carnival.

To the players; Great Show, Great Game! Thank you.
