MID-TERM REPORT - Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee 2008/09

The Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (“KLBC”) 2008/09 has been in office for about 7 months now. It is appropriate at this juncture for the KLBC to furnish members with a mid-term report on the work that has been carried out thus far. The KLBC has about another 5 months to go, until the AGM on 19.02.2009, and though many activities have been lined up for the next 5 months, we would welcome feedback from members on what more we can do and how we can serve you better. Counter for the filing of new summonses at the KL Subordinate Courts

PRACTICE DIRECTION NO. 1/2008 - ADJOURNMENT OF CASES

Y.A.A. the Chief Justice of Malaysia after consultation with Y.A.A. the President of the Court of Appeal, Y.A.A. the Chief Judge of Malaya, and Y.A.A. the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, issued the aforementioned Practice Direction No. 1 / 2008. Click here for a copy of the Practice Direction. The Practice Direction outlines the matters that must be considered by the Court when dealing with an application for adjournment of cases. It revokes the Practice Direction No. 1/2004. And it takes effect from 1 August 2008. Having serious concerns regarding paragraph 1 (iii) and (v) and that the same is equally applicable to paragraph 2, the KLBC had on 5 September 2008 met with the Chief Judge of Malaya to address these concerns. Urgent Announcement

The KLBC understands that Y.B. Dato' Seri Anwar's case is coming up for mention at the KL Court Complex tomorrow, 24.09.2008. We are unable to confirm if there is going to be any traffic disruption but based on past experience, the previous being on 10.09.2008, many members had difficulties getting into the Court due to heavy traffic and high security. To avoid any inconvenience, members who have matters at the KL Courts tomorrow morning are urged to arrive at the Court Complex early. Kindly take note. Dahlia W.M. Fax Numbers for the Registrars and the Judges' Secretaries of the KL High Court Civil Division

We have been informed by the High Court that there have been incidences of letters sent via fax by lawyers having not been received by the Civil Division of the High Court because the letters were being sent to the wrong numbers. Arising from this, the Deputy Registrar has furnished us with the list of the fax numbers for the respective Registrars and the Judges' Secretaries of the said Division for members' reference.
